Roster Rundown: #88 Patrick Turner

by Bassett on January 28th, 2012 at 11:00 am

Position: Wide Receiver
Height / Weight: 6’5″ 220 lbs.
Age: 24 / Experience: 3
College: University of Southern California

2011 Contract Status: Restricted Free Agent

2011 Analysis: The Jets didn’t use Patrick Turner during the first half of the season in the offense — but as the Jets traded Mason, TE Jeff Cumberland was put on injured reserve, Plaxico wore down, and most notably in the last game when Santonio quit — Turner saw some more time as a receiver.  Turner acquitted himself well enough as a backup player.  There’s room for improvement, but he did help the team when he was out there … the question will be whether he can do more in coming years.

2012 Outlook: He still has some things to work on, but for a player from whom much wasn’t expected offensively, when he did play, he played very well enough to not get drummed off the field.  2012 seems more uncertain.  The Jets have been looking to bring along some larger bodied receivers like Cumberland and Turner specifically, but it’s hard to say just how that will fit Sparano’s style of offense.

Random Thought: If there’s one good thing about going back to work for the man who cut him two years ago in Miami, it’s that at least he’d at least be familiar with some of the new terminology … which might help him out.

    That is an amazing photograph.

Turner has the size. It would be nice if he could become a contributor. You would think that he and Sanchez would do well together since they have known each other so long.

I never saw Turner do more than run down the field and turn around a few times. He looks to be slow, with maybe average hands. He is big. So what? Just because he caught a few 8 yarders is not reason to be optimistic.

His 40 time was not that much worse than Braylon’s. Big is good, especially when (I presume) we are going to be so run oriented.

I am not getting too excited, but he could become a contributor if they keep him around.

He would be good in the red zone replacing Plax but would probably have the same issues between the twenties… I’d keep him. I wonder how well Logan Payne is doing in rehab and if the Jets see him as a possible #2 next year,,,,

    “Sparano’s style of offense”

That is so good to read. I am so glad to be rid of Schotty and look forward to a new approach to the Jets offense. Heck, Sparano may bomb out and be worse, but at least it’s something to look forward to. What a relief.

Turner looked good on the field every time I seen him , finds an open spot, very hard to do in Schottys system.

  6. avatar Rusty sanchez says:

He made that big 4th and I think 17 against Denver to keep our final drive goin and made a big 3rd down catch the next week too both in the middle of the field with some coverage on him then I didn’t see much from him… Always thought since him and Sanchez were college teammates he had a chance to make some plays don’t know if it’s coaching staff or his abilities that hold him back

  7. avatar Harvlis says:

A player needs his coach to know his abilities and to psychologically build him up, if he is to succeed. Turner can be a nice part of our receiving corp, if Sparano sees his ability and potential. I have always criticized Schottenheimer for his lack of judgement of talent and his use of his players. I am not saying that Patrick Turner will become our new Braylon Edwards but, the only way he will have a chance is, if Sparano gives him the opportunity. Schottenheimer never did. As for Sparano having cut him in the past — that has to do with roster and the fact that Turner was a young, unproven receiver. Now that Sparano has film on Turner and, now that Turner has some game experience, things could be different. Experts are always saying that it takes a few years for a receiver to blossom. We shall see.

  8. avatar Randy says:

As a 4th receiver Turner is fine.Kerley is a proven slot guy, while Holmes clearly has to become number 2.We need a number 1 receiver such as Braylon. If Peyton Manning comes here, than Reggie Wayne would be the clear choice.

  9. avatar mattm says:

Turner is just another guy, but bigger. We can do a lot better.
