Super Bowl Sunday: Drink Yourself Silly

by Bassett on February 1st, 2012 at 3:15 pm

Thank sweet sweet flying spaghetti monster for Jason Gay, who writes today for the Wall Street Journal that self-respecting Jets fan see both possible outcomes of the game this weekend as an utter failure.

The weirdest gestures have been the suggestions on how Jets fans should root. First of all, no real Jets fan is going to make this decision. It’s a false choice. Asking a Jets fan to pull for the Giants or Patriots is like asking someone afraid to fly to join you on a 15-hour flight to Dubai and making them wait five hours on the tarmac. No sentient Jets fan, and they do exist, is going to throw on Giant blue or Patriots silver and masquerade around for three and a half hours Sunday night.

Exactly.  I already mourned the outcome of this game, either way, two Sundays ago.  There’s no real joy in your neighbor rubbing your nose in a Giants win, and if the Patriots win, their fans might not be in your face, but for those smug New England miscreants, this will just be anotha jool in theyah crawwwwwwwwwwhn.  Maybe because I don’t live in the New York area any more, cheering for the Giants is more tolerable .. either way, Sunday is gonna suck …

Hope you have lots of liquors … may NY superchef David Chang suggest some nice bourbons?

    Rooting for :

    A) My numbers in the Superbowl pool boxes I bought
    B) My playof fantasy team so I can win that office pool
    c) But mostly that they play 40 quarters of tie football and decide the winner by Brady and Manning having a fistfight at midfield , where they both sustain careeer ending hand injuries.

    • avatar nick says:

How is this even a question? Any real jets fan has an eternal hatred that should burn deep inside for those smug, cheating MASSHOLES! I would gouge my eyes out and cut off my tongue before i ever rooted for those classless cheaters. Will is suck to hear how the jets are se cond to the Giants, ABSOLUTELY, but lets face it, even if they lose…they still made it to the Super Bowl twice in 5 years and have an Elite QB so we are going to hear it anyway. The only comfort i will find in this game is the fact the if the Giants win, you know a feeling of complete failure and utter dismay will sweep across new England. Thats why EVERY jets fan should be pulling for the GMen (not wearing blue tho) or at least rooting against the pats as hard as you would root for the jets. IF YOU ROOT FOR THE PATS, YOUR NOT A REAL JETS FAN (stated as a fact but its just my opinion…really would love to hear someone disagree)

J-E-T-S for LIFE…but its a two team league right now and NY over NE is a joke of a question.

Im 31 and a die hard jets fan. I am comfortable admitting that, and could care less if someone judges me for rooting for the Giants. My father is in his 50′s and tells me about how the AFL was looked at like the minor leagues and how his friends who liked the Giants would let him know it every chance they got. So I can understand his HATRED of the Giants. I would never say in a million years that I am a giants fan, thus betting my friend a steak dinner on the jets having a better record than the giants, but I have no problem rooting for them nor any hatred towards them. I dont look at them as being different than any other NFC team. I found myself rooting for them in 2007 when i vowed not to have a rooting interest. I was happy when Burress caught the TD and the look on Brady and Belichecks faces. So this time around I will root for the Giants just because I cannot stand seeing the Pats win.

      • avatar Glenn A says:

Jets’ strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi was caught by TV cameras tripping Miami’s Nolan Carroll as he ran out of bounds on a punt coverage in the third quarter. The NFL said Monday that it is investigating the incident. Alosi has issued a statement apologizing for the trip saying, in part: he who casts stones.

  2. avatar nickballs2000 says:

There is no way in hell i would root for the Giants to win….i dont have to deal with any Pats fans, even though i hate that team too…Screw the Giants
im really just rooting for a hurricane/tornado/flood/tsunami

  3. avatar Matos says:

Located in CT.. Giants on one side of me, Pats fans on the other.. A captain and coke in my hand at all times to drown them both out…

  4. avatar spent says:

“Asking a Jets fan to pull for the Giants or Patriots is like asking someone afraid to fly to join you on a 15-hour flight to Dubai and making them wait five hours on the tarmac.”

Wow, had to walk a long way to get to the end of that simile.

  5. avatar AKA...Drew says:

    Hate both teams equally.

Actually hate the Giants fan base more.

Hate that one team gets another Super Bowl while my team dosen’t.

Hate that Weatherford or Ellis gets a ring.

Hate that if the Giants win I’ll hear for months how it’s Giants Stadium again.

Hate that if the Patriots win Belichick and Brady are basically immortal figures again.

Just get me to the draft. Where no matter what ….. We own the day!

  6. avatar Dave says:

I really, really don’t care about other fans in relation to it. I’ve got no issue with the Giants themselves.

  7. avatar Mike says:

I can’t even believe I feel this way but it has got to the point where I am rooting for the patriots. In 08′ I was at school in CT with large amounts of pats fans so I was rooting hard for the giants. But now that I’m back on LI where everyone is a giants fan all of a sudden and I can’t go a day without hearing people praise how great they are I have to pray the giants get killed. I’m hoping for Brady throwing 6 tds and embarrassing he giants so I can live peacefully and just avoid watching espn for a week or so. Even thinking I want the patriots to win makes me sick but what makes me sicker is the possibilty of another parade in NYC for the giants.

  8. avatar joeyboy79 says:

I am going for big blue. They are family! I have really respected the way they rallied and put it all together when it counts. BB and Tom Lady are just too arrogant for me. Eli never talks bad about anyone and just keeps getting better. Go big blue! I also think this will motivate the jets owner to load up as he hates playing second fiddle.

    • avatar Randy says:

DId you hear what Jacobs said?WHat kind of family says that our organization is a complete joke and that Burress would have been a Pro Bowl player if he played for the GIants.SCREW THEM!!!

So what if the Patriots win. They already proved to be a dynasty and 1 more Win isn’t going to hurt.On the other hand if the Giants win..we will never hear the end of it.NEVER EVER EVER!!!

I hate to say it..But let’s go Pats!I don’t think they will talk as much about winning it all than the Giants would.AFter they had to watch us the the playoffs the last 2 season’s, we would never hear the end of the talk.

    • avatar mike francesser says:

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again: You’re way too excited for to root for the Giants, haha.

      • avatar joeyboy79 says:

I am excited, I live in NY and hate the pats! Its cool if some want to wallow in bitterness, but I will have a blast! I have next season to hope my Jets come roaring out but now ,its enjoy brother blue and one hell of a party at my crib!

        • avatar mike francesser says:

I’m not for the wallowing in bitterness either. I’ll watch the game (most likely with a Pats fan friend who made me do a champagne toast after they won the AFCC game…blech), have some drinks, eat some food and just watch the game without rooting.

          • avatar joeyboy79 says:

The food/drinks sound good, but watching a SB like Mr.Spock? Try my brain washing technique, it works! Depending on the grey matter upstairs, some procedures only take a few seconds like mine, lol.

  9. avatar Jets-Fan-4-Life says:

I’m rooting for Armageddon to strike land in Indianapolis just below the turf of Lucas Oil Stadium!

This way when the earth opens up it can swallow both teams, sucking them both to He-double hockey sticks, and ridding the world of both teams!!!!

  10. avatar joeyboy79 says:

I am glad I have a team to root for. It has kept my season alive. Bitterness and jealousy are such a waste. My family and friends are Giant fans and I want to see them happy and have a good time. The only way I want them miserable, is if they are playing my Jets, then, all bets are off! To each his own though.I can understand the above posts and a no win situation for jet fans, just not my way.

    • avatar AKA...Drew says:

Haha…I wish I had what you had Joey. I just don’t.

    • avatar spent says:

Thanks for the insight, Dalai Lama.

      • avatar joeyboy79 says:

No problem my children! Peace in one’s heart and soul, is the key for happiness in the present as well as the new beginning!

PS,I will be taking posts from all who need my support with this upcoming and difficult day during the game Sunday at no charge, to support my Green brothers. The Dalai Lama also recommends a nice stash of hooch just to be safe!

  11. avatar Jake says:

I’m honestly having a debate with a couple of buddies on whether to even watch the game. One guy is trying to convince me by saying I’ll look like a sore loser and how he rooted for the Jets so his friends could be happy the last two years. The other guy is just talking trash. I honestly don’t have the heart to watch this game because neither alternative is good (the circumstances are much different than they were four years ago, as I didn’t use to hate the Giants).

Put it this way: If I do watch the game and the Giants don’t win, I’m going to be doing the dozens up and down.

Furthermore, I don’t know if the Jets will win the super bowl in my lifetime (I’ll be 33 in April), but if they do, I’m going to have a lot of words if the “Johnny come Lately” fans jump on the Jets like they did for the Giants the last month (there was no Giants gear anywhere a month ago, now everybody is a Giants fan, SMH)

  12. avatar mataos says: January 18, 2012 at 7:10 pm "I don't buy it" says:

Gonna be a slow night at the bowling alley Sunday.
I hate both teams, and I don’t care about American traditions.
Honestly how can any real Jet fan enjoy the game?
    No regrets comrades. No surrender.

  13. avatar Mike227 says:

Either outcome sucks, but I just can’t stomach the Patriots winning again. Yeah Giant fans are arrogant, but let’s be honest, Rex Ryan helped create this animosity. You talk a lot of trash you have to deal with the consequences if you don’t back it up.

  14. avatar mike westhoffs bastard brother says:

the basic premise of this article is bull. I’m a Jets fan first and always, and a New Yorker after that.

    Go Giants!

But wait till next year, cause the green’n'white is comin’ BACK!!!

    • avatar starz31 says:

Yeah, the article starts out alright, but there’s no way I’m not going to watch the freaking Super Bowl. Come on. Jets fan first and always and a New Yorker after that. Agree completely.

  15. avatar Matt says:

Easy choice, rooting for the Giants. I live in Quincy right outside of Boston which is cliche mass hole capitol of the world. Been up here now for almost 7 years and I don’t feel like hearing all the talking after another Boston team winning something.

    • avatar Bent says:

I think we’re all approaching this the wrong way. Either the Pats will lose or the Giants will lose, both of which will be enjoyable. So, pick the one you want to lose most, root for the other team and if the result doesn’t go that way, at least take solace in the fact that the team that did lose was someone you also didn’t like.

    • avatar starz31 says:

I hear that. Been living in boston the past 8 years. No way I’ll be rooting for the Patriots.

  16. avatar Ferraro41 says:

I’m not watching. I decided to brew a batch of Double IPA instead.

  17. avatar andres reyes says:

idk about u guys but im going w pats on this one ..giant fans gonna be t s… on the fan if they win…

  18. avatar andres reyes says:

dont drink..so ill be stuffing my face with some buffalowildwings and alot of diet coke

  19. avatar Rafael says:

i’m brazilian, and don’t know any giants fan here…and many brazilians root for the pats…and i HATE the patriots…so, i’m going to root for the giants

  20. avatar starz31 says:

I’ll be the biggest Giants fan there is on Sunday…At least I’ll be rooting for a New York team.
Living and working in Boston there is no way I’ll be rooting for the Patriots.

  21. avatar MattNYC says:

Never understood why rooting for one team (Jets) means you should dislike your neighbor (Giants). Go NY, Go NY, Go.

  22. avatar JayM says:

No way I root for the Giants to win. It will become Giants stadium again, so I want to see the Giants lose. Their fan base are one of the most obnoxious to deal with and I know more Giant fans than pats fans. If you are a Jets fan think about what you are going to hear from the team you have to share a stadium with. I WANT THE GIANTS TO LOSE.

  23. avatar joeyboy79 says:

I won’t get no hassle from the giant fans, I am on their side against the dirt bag pats! After the Giants win, I use the argument we are all now 0-0 for the 2012 season.

  24. avatar hank/naples says:

Absolutely NOTHING wrong with a ZINFANDEL/SPRITE Spritzer FOLLOWED by a Crystal Aguadiente chaser!N!!

  25. avatar joeyboy79 says:

I admit, my choice to root for the Giants was accomplished by many days of brainwashing myself. I said they are NY, my family and friends want them to win,so be happy for them, you hate the pats more than hate itself and you will have a great time having a favorite on SB Sunday to root for! I kept drilling it into my thought process and bingo! Try it, for some here the brainwashing will be relatively easy, lol. Just a joke, easy men!

  26. avatar jsa says:

Only one team’s coach quit on the Jets to go to his current team.

Only one team comeptes with the Jets to win their division.

Only one team plays the Jets twice each year.

The Jets are my favorite NFL team. Whoever is playing the Pats is my second favorite.

    Go Giants!

  27. avatar Dan says:

I wont even watch the game.I haven’t watched a SB since 1980 or so (Philly-oakland). If the Jets aren’t in it I can’t be bothered

  28. avatar Matt in Maine says:

Basset I’m with you. Living up here in Portland, I am completely surrounded by Pats fans. The only conciliation to this disappointing season would be watching all the Pats fans up here completely speechless after yet another loss to the Giants.

  29. avatar georgeJETSon says:

I will be rooting for the first ever 0-0 tie! Or rolling blackouts to the national grid.

  30. avatar boozer says:

I’m a Wild Turkey man myself.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Jameson & Jack for me. Jose will swing by later on. I met the trio at the last Pats/Giants Super Bowl, so we’re having a reunion on Sunday.

  31. avatar joeyboy79 says:

Lol, but if thats your hope, make sure you have plenty of C2H5OH on hand!

  32. avatar klecko71 says:

as usual…brendan makes the most sense.

but on a serious note, all of us tortured jet fans have reasons to root for both teams.

for some, dealing with smug arrogant entitled giants fans is too much. for others its against everything holy to root for the patriots.

i hate the pats with a passion. no doubt. but the inferiority complex with the giants is very real. and 2 supes in 4 years is a freaking joke…especially the way it might happen with them being 9-7 and going on a miracle run.

giant fans are intolerable in general…most of them anyway. so i slightly back the pats… even though i win 1000 on a 50$ bet on the giants to win the supe from back in november.

yes..that sounds insane..that i could root against the giants with a +1000$ chance… but christ i will only lose 50 if they lose… i can handle it.

  33. avatar Revis Christ says:

Got the bottle of Jay-mo ready. Ready to drown away my sorrows.

  34. avatar Longshot says:

Gee, none of you said anything about drinking Sam Adams. :)

  35. avatar brian says:

I am rooting for the Pats. Giant fans have been killing me. And I blame Rex Ryan for obnoxious Giant fans needling me. Need I remind you:
“Some people like to say the Giants are the big brother team and the Jets are the little brother team. … I have news for you: We are the better team. We are the big brother.” …

“When people ask me what it’s like to share New York with the Giants, my response is always I am not sharing it with them – they are sharing it with me. … It seems clear that right now we are the better team and we are going to remain the better team for the next 10 years. Whether you like it or not, those are the facts and that’s what is going to happen.”

  36. avatar kdbart says:

The only answer is to root for a game so monumental in its’ awfulness, think the regular season LSU/Alabama game, that no one will want to discuss or brag about it afterward.

    • avatar Bent says:

It’s a solid point – remember how awful the Colts-Bears SB was? Peyton looked embarrassed to win the MVP and just wanted to get out of the rain. However, I must protest vehemently: That LSU/Bama game was the BEST game I saw all year! It was fantastically tense and a tactical battle where every first down was crucial. I’m not kidding – it boggles my mind that the game was portrayed as boring. The 21-0 championship game? Now that was boring.

  37. avatar WOJF says:

    I wont “root” for either but I hope the Pats win because;

    A) With another ring maybe Brady will start thinking of retirement
    B) Until this year there has been a serious SB hangover for the winner, would prefer the Pats have that hangover
    C) I know more annoying Giants Fans than Pats fans

Oh yeah, I will be rooting for JPP to HIT TOM BRADY!!!!!

  38. avatar xtremestarzz says:

i will be rooting for the team in jersey.

  39. avatar testiculon says:

How any Jets fan could ever root for the Pats is incomprehensible to me. I want them to go down. Hard.

    Who are they playing again?

  40. avatar joeyboy79 says:

If you need another reason to root against the Pats,Logan Mankins took shots at the Jets. He said the Jets are blow hards and look where they are now. He said they say whatever they want and it bit them in the arse. I really hate the pats and hope they get pounded!

  41. avatar JoeDog says:

In the Superbowl, I always circle the wagons and back the AFC. I’m not backing the Pats, I’m backing my conference.

  42. avatar Bittinho says:

I’m hoping for a meteor to hit the game (with no injuries, only destroying the field so the game will be forever postponed). I could never root for the Pats and much of my family are Giants fans but because of all of the trash talking (mostly Rex’s fault, wish he would tone it way down already) and the way the Giants used us as a springboard to get where they are, I can’t root for the Giants either.

However, if forced at gunpoint to decide I would choose the Giants, because my father is a Giants fan. I am very unhappy the past 2 weeks about this game and I see I am not alone. I am seriously thinking about not watching the game but I know come Sunday night, I’ll be watching it on the tube. My head almost explodes thinking about watching this game for the 2nd time in 5 years. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

  43. avatar Kevin says:

How can you watch a football game without at least some bias towards one of the teams playing? As a Jets fan, I cannot possibly root fot their hated rivals, the Patriots. That leaves the other team which happens to be the Giants. I won’t be wearing Giants gear or high fiving anyone when the Giants make a big play but considering who’s on the other side, I’m going to be pulling for the Giants (or should I say against the Patriots).

  44. avatar Josephine says:

I’ve been agonizing over this for weeks. The closest I can come is to say that if I had to choose who I would want to lose more, it would be the Patriots.

What would really make my year is if Brady’s leg went all Theismann during the game and he is forced to retire, but outside of that, I guess I’ll just have to be content with them losing the game.

  45. avatar JJ says:

Cmon Bassett really? You’re better than this bro… I’ve gotta say putting this Giants-hating crap up there should be below you. There is no rivalry, none. They played each other this year, so sure there are some harsh words exchanged, but this isn’t mets-yanks, isles-rangers. It’s not even Knicks-nets. They share a stadium. Theyve almost never been good at the same time. There are 0 memorable games these teams have ever played. Theres no Piazza-Clemens. Theres just Rex talking crap and some morons trying to make a big deal out of this. Have some pride in your city, throw on a Giants hat and let’s get down with them when they mop the field with brady’s battered brains. Im as bitter, mean and diehard a Jets fan as they come but I’m 100% on the giants bandwagon for this one. If you’re not, you’re not a real cold blooded new yorker. I know it sucks to hear from chippy Giants fans that they beat us and they’re in the superbowl, but did any of you watch that Christmas eve game? The Giants only suck slightly less than the Jets- that’s not a great football team. They’re damn lucky to be there and I definitely won’t hesitate to remind giants fans of this- the smart ones know it and keep their mouth shut about the Jets. The only difference is that their QB is nasty and looks like a dunce, and ours is pretty terrible and looks like a sweater model. but in any case, I’ll be at the parade, happy that Brady is sitting at home crying. And hopefully looking at a long recovery from a career-ending injury caused by a Pierre-Paul sack.

  46. avatar Glenn A says:

Pats win a close one. GO PATS.
