Shaun Ellis Felt Disrespected by Jets

by Steiny on February 2nd, 2012 at 11:07 am

With the Super Bowl just days away, the Jets are still the topic of conversation in Indianapolis. Yesterday, Rich Cimini interviewed Shaun Ellis, and asked him to describe what happened between him and the Jets this past offseason.

The former New York Jets defensive end is on Cloud XLVI, enjoying life as a member of the New England Patriots, but he still harbors some bitterness toward his former team. Ellis, recalling his divorce from the Jets, said Tuesday he found their contract offer insulting — a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum, $910,000.”Yeah, I did. No loyalty,” Ellis said at media day. “They preached that the whole time — loyalty, loyalty, blah, blah, blah.”

Ellis, 34, the longest-tenured defensive lineman in Jets history, was an unrestricted free agent last offseason after starting 15 games for them in 2010. But once they used their first-round pick on defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson, Ellis felt like he was cast aside.

Not only was he upset with their offer, but Ellis said “it was how they made it” that really peeved him. He suggested general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan weren’t upfront with him.

“They called and said, ‘We’re going to let Rex speak with you,’ ” Ellis said. “He said, ‘We want you to come back, but we’re not going to start you.’ I’m like, OK. Tannenbaum said, ‘We’ve got other guys in front of you, we’re offering you the minimum. We’ll get back to you.’

“It’s all how it went about. Just be stand-up, straight up. Just tell me the truth from the start. I’m a big boy, I can handle it. I just felt like there was a lot of sugar coating.”

Soon after the lockout was settled, Ellis signed a one-year, $4 million contract with the Patriots, the Jets’ longtime nemesis. You could argue that loyalty is a two-way street, and that Ellis was a sell out, but he insisted that wasn’t the case.

“I didn’t. They didn’t want me,” said Ellis, revealing that he will consider retirement after the Super Bowl. “That was obvious by what they offered me. … It was a no-brainer. I gave them an opportunity and they said, ‘Nope.’ “

“We want you to come back, but we’re not going to start you. We’ve got other guys in front of you, we’re offering you the minimum. We’ll get back to you.”

How much more straightforward can you get than that? And that’s straight from Ellis’s mouth! I’m glad the guy was Jet for as long as he was, but obviously he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed. Remember the game where he dropped the giant snowball on the fan? All in jest, but still not so bright. Let it go Ellis!

  2. avatar JayM says:

The Jets paid Ellis every cent of his contract that he negotiated for. Enough of the respect BS. pay me millions they can disrespect me all they want lol.

    • avatar Bent says:

Yep. Every cent*…in an era where the Jets are bashed for letting guys go before their contract is up as if they “owe” them the money remaining on the contract (which of course they don’t because it’s non-guaranteed money). He has even less of a complaint than guys like Jones or Baker…even though they have no real complaint either.

      * Apart from the money he lost by getting himself suspended.

  3. avatar OldRich says:

Seems that the Jets signed him to a long-term deal years ago instead of Abraham. He has a short memory. We all reach the end.

  4. avatar Brooklyn Dude says:

I wonder if they would have made the same decision now, knowing how the season unfolded and the lack of leadership.

Offering the minumum to Ellis seemed wrong.

They probably could have had him for 2m if they had not offered a take it or leave it kind of offer, and before NE’s offer.

  5. avatar john says:

I love how people spin stuff so they are the good guy and the other is the bad guy…..Sean Ellis states that the Jets told him they wanted him back, were not gonna start him and offered him the Veteran min.. Then he says they weren’t upfront with him. That is about as upfront as you get. Loyalty doesn’t mean you overpay a guy because he’s been with you a few years. NE is notorious for NOT paying their guys and getting rid of them when they have the most value. Because NE had the cap space they could afford to pay a guy 4mil to sit on the bench. If I was him, I’d take the pay and shut the fugg up. He makes himself smaller by talking like this…..

  6. avatar 8=D says:

Shut up, Big Kat. Even that 900K the Jets offered was too much considering the abysmal numbers you put up in NE. How about you show the loyalty and take the contract that is closer to your worth than running to the enemy for a bigger pay day.

  7. avatar boogie down says:

I think my comment got deleted for some reason.

  8. avatar karl hungus says:

Really tired of talking about guys that arent playing for us anymore….He got 4m to sit on the bench and play 4 snaps a game…..good for him…..

  9. avatar Eric Smith Couldn't Cover his Grandmother says:

Typical Tanenbaum. A real people person.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Would you have felt better if he sent a bouquet of flowers with the offer?

      • avatar Eric Smith Couldn't Cover his Grandmother says:

Face it. As you saw in Hard Knocks, Tanenbaum treats people like crap. And if it worked that would be one thing. But he’s dumped numerous veterans to save money and never replaced them with anyone as good, and when you look at the talent they have now, they are far from a top team. So take your flowers and send them to your pal Tanenbaum.

        • avatar Brendan says:

You are so wrong it’s staggering.

Please name the veterans he cut and “never replaced with anyone as good,” because nearly every name you put on that list was replaced by someone with equal or better grades the following yet.

        • avatar TheRealRK says:

Tannenbaum treats people like crap and the team Ellis went to doesn’t? Should we run down the longtime veterans they’ve cut. Its the business, to act as if the Jets are the only team that does this is naive. Its a business and cold one. You want to use edited clips on Hard Knocks as a determining factor on how Tannenbaum treats people? Do you know how TV works, especially a reality show? They can make anyone look how they want. You see 1% of the footage. What’s a better story conflict with Gm and player or a cordial relationship?

        • avatar Revis Christ says:

          “He treats people like crap”

Its his job dude wtf do you want him to do write a letter, give them a box of chocolates, and tell them “It’s not me it’s you”????

Tanny is cold and shows no personality when talking with anyone. You can tell by his non stop studdering, scripted lines that he uses and re-uses. But that’s what hes paid to do! Make tough decisions!

    • avatar hank/naples says:

      Eric Smith:

And another one bites the dust!!

      Truths are stubborn things.

      • avatar Cip says:

I would imagine it would be near impossible (at least for me) to be a gm of a team and also be a “people person”. You saw Hard Knocks…I thought the guy was so cold when letting people go but when that’s your job what’s the point of getting emotionally involved. Anyone see “Moneyball”?

        • avatar Brendan says:

Shhhh, don’t you know that player agents are the warmest, most enjoyable people to negotiate contracts with? They certainly don’t pull scummy stunts to get more $, and they DEFINITELY don’t do it at the expense of their players. Nope, not ever.

Tanny is evil incarnate, players and agents are simply angels trying to bring him back to the light.

        • avatar hank/naples says:

          Cip:

Saw “Moneyball” and was very impressed with the reality.

However, GMs have the difficlut task of cutting a player as do ALL Managers when firing an employee…the UHHHGGGLLY part of the job!!!

That said refer back to Billy Bean (GM) where he almost cried when he had to let go of an overachieving, loyal player!!

It is impossible to disconect your emotions from some one you’ve had close, LONG ties and served you well unless you are a cold hearted, calculating, bottom line, bean counting jerk!!!

  10. avatar MikeB says:

It sounds like they were very upfront with him. He was a free agent and got a better offer and jumped to his longtime arch rivals.

  11. avatar JetObsessed28 says:

I don’t about you guys… but it feels like, “another day, another negative story” regarding the Jets..

Can’t wait for some good news..

The horse is dead, why are we still kicking it?

    • avatar JetObsessed28 says:

      And another thing..

Ellis says, “be up-front, be stand up” or whatever he says…

And then he details how they were up-front about how they had others ahead of him and were going to pay him like a back-up..

Sounds like Ellis’ judgement is still clouded by blunt smoke.

      • avatar Bent says:

        THANK YOU!

I don’t get his complaint there. He wanted them to be upfront and then detailed how up-front they were…surely he can’t have been blindsided by the news of a minimum salary offer when we’d been predicting the Jets would do exactly that once his contract expired for years.

How dumb must his agent be not to realize that was coming?

Money is tight, so it would have been poor asset management to pay a backup any more than the minimum. As it turns out, the D-Line was the strength of the team, so that would have been money wasted. It might even have had an adverse effect in terms of slowing down the progress of the young guys and who knows how he’d have dealt with decreased playing time in the locker room?

        • avatar clarkgaines1979 says:

guys, i can’t believe what i’m reading. Ellis is right to feel after all this time that he was blown off, because he was. Any experienced manager would not have approached it that way. Not if they had any people skills. They made it clear, if that is indeed how it went down, that they were making an offer out of obligation, not true desire for him to return.

Here’s how you word it properly, ” Shaun, we wanted to thank you for your years of hard work and let you know early on where we stood. We would like to have you back, to provide depth and mentoring, but we do not envision you as a starter next year. We are up against the wall with the cap and we feel we can get younger and faster at the position. We would like you to stay and get a chance to win a ring with the jets after all these years…still, we will not be able to offer you more then the league minimum. We mean this as no disrespect, but to the contrary, had this been anyone else but you, we would not even be making this offer…and there still is always the chance you can win back your job….here, the best player always plays.”

It doesn’t change the facts, maybe not even the outcome…but it is the right and classy way to have handled this. I think Tannenbaum is a weasle and everything i always hated about corporate america…and rex is clueless in anything other then the art of football coaching. They should both take classes on resolving personnel issues. Maybe “T” has gotten cold to it, but it is still very little excuse. It takes less time then I took to write this to handle it appropriately.

I agree, we didn’t need Ellis, and how ironic that he gets his SB chance without us, when i thought that was the one reason to bring him back for.

Has anyone here ever left a job? Money always is the end issue…quite often how respected you are and how you are treated, carries more weight then you realize.

              • avatar Brendan says:

                Hah, I’ll try not to.

I am just trying to laugh at the silliness of this thread.

Ellis already said today that he’d come back to the Jets next year. And you based your post off of his summation of the conversation that took place.

I don’t think T-Rex sat down and just came out with “you’re a backup, we’ll give you the vet minimum.” I’m sure they told him how much he meant to the team’s success and transition into Rex’s squad, etc.

I just think getting too detailed in a situation like this, as an outsider, can lead to misconceptions.

                • avatar Bent says:

Maybe they weren’t that bothered about him returning. They seemed pretty confident in the guys they had and, for once, were right to be. Just be straight with him and if he’s prepared to return for the lowest amount then you can keep him in the fold. He might not even have made the team anyway. It’s feasible.

Did not Ellis himself say they shouldn’t sugarcoat things? That’s exactly what “You were a great servant to us blah blah blah” would be if it’s a guy they were confident they could live without.

                • avatar clarkgaines1979 says:

well, you’re right…i guess i got sucked into “thejetblog” world LOL!…you know where most of the posts are negative and delivered as if we really have first hand info LOL!

And what i should have said anyway, is that it matters little what the actual words were. Whether they were delivered with any sincerity is what really matters…otherwise it IS just blah, blah…corporate drivel.

I think i was just struck by the negative attitude of the first few posts…i’m usually out of sequence by the time i actually hit post! I have no feeling about ellis either way, but the negative attitude towards a guy that played his ass off for 11 years made me scratch my head. I guess that happens a lot around here.

I do not know the back history between all the “players” on this site. But i hate an “all things are Black and White” mentality. We have to bash old former players…we have to call guys bums because they don’t seemingly have the innate talent which we want them to have. Yesterday it was let’s bash Westermann…a backup! Not sure i always agree with your analysis, but i like the fact that you and bent are not usually reactionary.

I also let my own pre-conceptions of what i think of tanny personally…which of course could be completely baseless. Just my gut and what i’ve seen on “hard Knocks”…Which means no reliable intel.

So i apologize for letting it get to me and reacting irrationally ;)

                  • avatar Brendan says:

Hah, don’t apologize, it’s all good.

I said yesterday my feelings on Ellis. I loved him while he was here, he’s a great Jet, but he picked one of 2 teams that meant I simply couldn’t root for him anymore. It sucks not being able to be happy for the guy, but I can’t commend him for jumping to the team’s biggest rival and finding (possible) success.

And you aren’t alone in having a dislike or a concern regarding Tanny, but thank you for conveying it in a intelligent and reasonable way.

Getting sucked into TJB isn’t usually so rough, it’s usually pretty fun around here. Hopefully once draft fever hits us we’ll all be moving on and stop holding onto the past.

                    • avatar clarkgaines1979 says:

I can’t root for ellis either, and it is a shame. Pulling for the giants all the way…I know there are a lot of guys here in hell over the SB choices…I’ve never had too much problem with giant fans…occasional trash talking, but if it’s in fun, i don’t mind. I hate Brady.

I look forward to the draft too. I guess the hurt of the collapse is still gnawing at everyone. I’ve moved past it and look at it as a possible positive. I think schotty needed to go (without animosity, just the facts) and i think rex needs to start coaching the “whole” team. I think both things will lend itself to a positive (or at least potentially) outcome. I’m also with you that i wish the peyton stuff would go away.

                    • avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

The blog has been unusually rough the last month. Lots of really crazy comments lately and arguments. Usually lots of fun. Welcome.

  12. avatar AKA....Drew says:

Ellis totally contradicts himself here….. I’m not sure how more upfront he wanted the Jets to be?

We want you back as a back up player playing for the veteren minimum is pretty stright forward. Which based on his season with the Patriots is exactly what he should have been offered.

Mr T didn;t have a great off seaon but Ellis leaving was not a bad decision. He was replaced by a rookie making much less money. That’s called a smart business decision.

Ellis was pissed that he was considered a back up and offered an ïnsulting” offer.

    End of Story

  13. avatar mikebe1 says:

its amazing how bitter all these ex jets r jenkins ellis diggs cotchery even edwards.sorry guys we cant keep you all.if we could im sure we woulda.

  14. avatar mikebe1 says:

o yeah weatherford too even tho he shriveled up like a @$## in a pool during the playoffs he still felt slighted get over yourself.

  15. avatar Justin says:

Geez, Ellis comes off as a complete baby. How hard is to brush it aside and just say it’s a business. You were paid a huge amount of money, and are on the tail end of your career! Deal with it!

It’s not like you had all that productive a season in NE.

  16. avatar kd bart says:

If I gather from the media, this Super Bowl is between Peyton Manning and the Jets.

  17. avatar kd bart says:

Just saw some tweets from Mehta that Mike Smith is not taking the WVU job and will be returning to be the Jets’ OLB coach.

  18. avatar J from Jersey says:

Why pay 4 million for a rotational player? Ellis quickly forgot about the times where we supported Ellis when he was talking around NY with a bong in his right hand and a football in the other

Talk is cheap Ellis, sit on the sidelines and enjoy the experience, no need to run your mouth

  19. avatar frankc says:

wow i guess I’m in the minority on this as I want a long time Vet back on the team for leadership. yeah, he wasn’t the player he was but he could’ve helped Wilkerson & Ellis develop. he’s not the only Jet with ill feelings toward the front office so I do think it’s fair to say it’s not all on “cry baby” Ellis. The guy played like a beast in the Divisional playoff last year and you bring up a snowball fight. God Almighty how quickly you guys tow the front office line on this site!!!!

  20. avatar jvsvn says:

This is totally a non-story. The Jets didn’t want Ellis back, they made that pretty obvious, he got the message and went and found another situation for himself. Everybody did exactly what they should have done. Case closed. Ellis is not a baby. He worked somewhere for 9 years and then was told he was no longer wanted. He felt a little hurt. He was just expressing a totally normal reaction that anyone would have in a similar situation. Nothing about this situation is “a controversy.” It’s just life.

    • avatar Olerud_4_LIfe says:

Yea hes def a baby when he spews lies and gives proof of contradiction. If you were hurt, just say it. Every “loyal” player feels that way. Dont spin the story to try and make the jets sound bad, especially when the jets are currently down. The jets never went out and spun Ellis’ so-called great season last year as he only really played up for the pats game in the playoffs (which he really did but whatever).

Funny, last year ive seen the most grown men in football act like kids (ellis, jenkins, LT, LT-giants, b-jacobs, antrel rolle, holmes)

  21. avatar frankc says:

who said 4 million for Ellis-he’d probably have stayed for less than New England but should have been offered more than the vet minimum. There was plenty of cap room that went un-used this year. Right Bent? There’s something to be said for a guy who plays his WHOLE career in one uniform-a Jet uniform.

    • avatar J from Jersey says:

N.E. payed 4 million, no way would he of turned that down if we offered 1.5 million, he took the money and ran

Dude made plenty of money on the Jets – we had cap room but I think Tanny is saving it for an off-season with no lockout

You don’t pay tons of money for a player that quite frankly only had 1 good game last season and that was against N.E. in the playoffs

    • avatar Bent says:

No cap room is going to be unused. They’ll roll it forward to 2012 and use it then…and they likely need every cent because money will be tight, so anything more than a minimum salary deal for Ellis would have been wasteful IMO (and the on-field results prove that).

(Note that a minimum salaried deal would have only been $500k against the cap, so increasing the offer from $910K to $1.5m would have cost them a million in cap room.)

  22. avatar CTforNYJets says:

Leave it to Rich Cimini to ask the important questions. Some journalism…

This really sounds like sour grapes from Shaun. I mean if you have any doubt as to if the Jets made a prudent move here than you must have been smoking blunts with Mr. Ellis.

  23. avatar AKA...Drew says:

The front office gets one right and they still get killed for it from the fan base?

Shaun Ellis was offered the vet min because that’s what he deserved. If you don’t beleive this …. go look at his 2011 stats.

Yes, it would have been nice for Ellis to end his career here but this happens with aging vets every year. He chose to get paid a lot more money in New England and we moved on with Big Mo playing well.

  24. avatar JayGo says:

I have never seen such venom come from all sources at a team. I know Rex and the bravado forces him and us to eat crow, but the never-ending piling on is out of hand. And it has a mean streak that is also unusual. I heard Micheal Kaye questioning yesterday on the radio how come all these Giant fans disrespect and are mean about Brady in a way Red Sox fans have never direspected Jeter and the Yankees. Same Jets nonsense bleeding over to the Pats.

I blame the media. WFAN, the Post, etc. have a clear hatred for the Jets and all they stand for. Behavior and speech once proper only in private or at the ballpark is now on the airwaves and back page fanning flames and setting a bad example. It’s not not just OK, but indeed fashionable, to be mean, disrespectful and rude to the Jets and everything non-Giants. Funny how everything they claim the Jets to be is how they behave when the Jets management has accepted blame, been contrite, did all the hard interviews, etc.

Can’t wait until next year. Rooting for the Pats in the SB. Let them feel accomplished and let them go to Disneyland while Rex plots. If we can’t beat NE, we’re going nowhere so anything that takes the chip off their collective shoulders works for me. Also, time for these Giant fans to shut up.

    Cheers.

  25. avatar frankc says:

btw Ellis was hurt this year. I’ll say it for the 90th time-he would have been a decent rotational player this year with leadership ability and could have helped the young guys. I love DeVito and Pouha but neither has the experience Ellis does. So, if they could have had him for $2M, that’s the smart move-not the Vet minimum or $3-4M. That was the way to approach it -not the way Mr. T did. He rubs people the wrong way. Doesn’t mean he won’t be successful but I don’t think you can dispute that. That’s that.

  26. avatar damion says:

    can’t wait…
Till the jets are actually in the superbowl they might get less coverage.

  27. avatar KenEB says:

Had the Bears drafted Wilkerson instead of OT Gabe Carimi, the Jets would have selected Carimi and re-signed Ellis. This is the nature of the business.

  28. avatar John B says:

It’s funny how Mr T found money for Santonio but not for real Jets. The big problem with this team is that they talk a great game but don’t walk the path. Wouldn’t Play Like A Jet mean more if they took care of the heart and soul players on the team. That also includes Damien Woody.

    • avatar Eric Smith Couldn't Cover his Grandmother says:

Exactly. He hasn’t replaced one of the veterans he dumped with anyone as good. This team needs a major overhaul to go anywhere, and with their cap situation, that will be quite a chore.

      • avatar Brendan says:

Have you looked at the stat lines for people he’s let go.

When Tanny cuts or chooses not to re-sign someone he is almost ALWAYS proven right (insert nonsensical comment about Pete Kendall….here).

Why does a team that is still very similar to the team that went to two straight AFC title games need a “major overhaul?”

Marcus Dixon outplayed Ellis this year, for like 1/6th the cost. That’s smart management by Tanny.

  29. avatar reality jet fan says:

All these ex jets who played for rex just keep gushing about this orginization its embarissing

  30. avatar Jake says:

Man up and get over it Ellis.

  31. avatar Pete57 says:

Take the emotion out of it!
Ellis and Woody were done. The front office made the right moves as stated earlier. If we kept an aging player and overpaid him and he didn’t perform, you would kill Tannenbaum for that!
The truth is Tanny has overseen the best stretch of Jets football in over 30 years.
If any Jet fan can’t see that or appreciate it then that’s your bad.

    • avatar reality jet fan says:

If wody was done(whick i dont know if he was)he would be a 1000 times better then hunter who got a good contract off 4 games

      • avatar Brendan says:

He wouldn’t have played a single snap until midseason. Do you not remember he exploded his achilles tendon in a playoff game?

        • avatar reality jet fan says:

if thats true its odd how many fans brought it up

          • avatar Brendan says:

Yeah, because FANS are the end-all-be-all of analysis, right?

Take off the hater shades for 5 seconds and look at this logically.

Woody was 35 years old. He was well over 350 pounds by the time August rolled around. He had not been undergoing “football activities” at the time Tanny & Rex spoke with him. He had a lower leg injury that is considered catastrophic for men his size. He had said lower leg injury in the middle of January. Pitoitua had the same injury in AUGUST and wasn’t back to 100% until after the season started. Using the recovery arc of a guy a decade younger than Woody, it would take Woody AT LEAST until the following January to play. If Woody is some form of mutant healer, he would maybe be ready by midseason.

I am so tired of this discussion. Woody had a job lined up before he even spoke with Rex & Tanny, how realistic is it to think he was going to give the Jets 16 healthy weeks in the season?

  32. avatar Revis Christ says:

  34. avatar Pete57 says:

Reality, Woody retired. So he was not an option. (please don’t go into if we had offered more money, blah blah blah.) No one offered him anything.

But can you address my point I made earlier: “Tannenbaum has overseen the best stretch of Jets football in over 30 years.”

    Your comments please.

I have heard different stories on why woody left. And how sad is it that our best stretch of football has no superbowl wins big deal

  35. avatar reality jet fan says:

There 4 best picks came when mangini was drafting with tanny. I know there are peopl on here who still think kyle wilson and vlad were good picks whickh is hysterical. But revis mangold harris and brick were with mangini.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Wilson outplayed McCourty this year, and everyone thinks Belichick is a genius for drafting him.

      • avatar reality jet fan says:

You bring him up because it makes you feel better. I read all your kyle wilson and vlad stuff. Wilson is ok and he was a 1st rounder and vlad was a joke of a pick.

        • avatar reality jet fan says:

You guys love rex and tanny so much. What will you do when a gm and hc actually win something for the jets

          • avatar Brendan says:

Be happy. Something I’m actually capable of being.

Still waiting for your response to my above post re: Woody.

            • avatar reality jet fan says:

You may be right about woody i didnt know all that. And vlad?

              • avatar john says:

Hey RealityJet, that is the problem with most of your posts, namely, you have no clue what is going on or why. You just spew vitriol against the FO or anyone who disagrees with you.
OH my God, the Jets used a late second round pick on a OT with TONS of upside but very, very raw. OHHHHH, he isn’t an all-pro after 2 seasons, WAWWWWWWWW! FIRE TANNY!!!!
                PUH_LEEEEEESE…..GROW THE FUGG UP!

        • avatar Brendan says:

Wilson is good. His rookie year was certainly disappointing, but he improved mightily last year. Anyone who can’t see that is just blind by their dislike for their own team.

  36. avatar juunit says:

There will always be a certain amount of sour grapes with this kind of thing… but damn. There really shouldn’t be any kind of question how Ellis was treated right? That guy WAS the Jets, he deserved the utmost respect.

  37. avatar reality jet fan says:

    What a glorious stretch

  38. avatar TheRealRK says:

Welcome to sports where a longtime player over the hill is not brought back and has bitter feelings. This must be totally isolated to the Jets right? Gimme a break. The guy was told what was up and he decided to go for more than 4X what was offered. Good for him but don’t blame the Jets for not wanting to pay a guy who only played “3 SNAPS” last week $4 million. It happens in every sport on every team. Last time I checked the Jets signed Ellis to several lucrative contracts over his 11 years with the team. Sorry if they didnt’ think you were worthy of another one. Grow up Shawn

  39. avatar Pete57 says:

Reality, your comments belie your name. So the fact that our GM has brought us(so far), the best stretch of football in 3 decades, means nothing because we haven’t won a SB yet? Is this not cause for optimism? You seem very negative in the face of very positive results.

The Jets have had a very hard road the last 30 years. Think about this: The Jets have always had a HOF QB in their division for those 30 years (Marino, Kelly, Brady). And 2 of those QB’s have had HOF HC’s. Name one other team in the league that has had to deal with that! You can’t. In spite of that Tanny has had us in the playoffs regularly and in the AFC title game twice. And one of our playoff wins has been against a HOF QB and HC, in their building. When have you EVER seen the Jets do that? Never.
Of course we all want a SB. But to disregard our progress is very shortsighted.

  40. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

ugh, who cares about ellis anymore.

It’s this easy, no matter who you are, if your on the Jets I root for you.

No matter who you are the minute you aren’t on the Jets, I hate you.

I’m a Jet Fan. I loved Ellis here, but he is a Pat now. I hate the Pats, with every single cell in my body, even the dead ones, so, F ELLIS IN THE FACE!

    • avatar nickballs2000 says:

      hahaah… +10000000

    • avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

Exactly. Though, I would diagree with hating players the moment they are not on the Jets.

Were Ellis on the Titans or the Raiders, for instance, and they were in the SB I would be cheering for him right now.

As it is, he joined the Pats (who probably paid him to bring his knowledge of the Jets as much as anything) not some other team. (of course had he joined the Phins, I would feel the same way.

As a member of the Pats. F him. Go Giants.

  41. avatar Brooklyn Dude says:

If you look at only stat lines, there are a lot of players overpaid.
The only question to ask is would Ellis have had more value to the Jets in the locker room and as a rotational player, and what would that be worth, 2m maybe.
Off the playoff game, he show’d he had something left.

The Pats would have offered 4m, and adios, nobody leaves 2m on the table at this stage.

Kyle Wilson has improved, and Rex puts him in more man to man than most teams would.
I’d like to see him show more confidence in himself, because I think he has more ability than he has shown so far.

  42. avatar john says:

Yeah, you guys have convinced me, We should have given Ellis whatever he wanted to stay with the Jets, same thing for Woody. Then we wouldn’t have been able to sign Holmes. So because of that we wouldn’t have had the locker room meltdown and we’d probably be playing for the Superbowl this week!!
I think the Yankees should give Posada a new contract also, I mean he might go to Boston and ride the bench there!

  43. avatar MAZz says:

Who gives a turd about that turd Ellis. Honestly – he disrespected the Jets and their fans by being a damn pothead and not achieving the greatness he could have.

  44. avatar Pete57 says:

Ellis told the Post today that he would consider a return to the Jets and that he loves Rex Ryan.

Also, please ask some Patriot fans how they like the Ellis signing.

  45. avatar AKA...Drew says:

Again …. Wilkerson and Dixion >> Ellis.

Sound move by the Jets FO.

  46. avatar nickballs2000 says:

so let me get this straight. The Jets told Ellis that he wasn’t going to start (he also didnt start in NE). Then offered him the minimum. So he whined and cried and said he was disrespected. After getting paid good money for a decade, he felt disrespected..hmmmmm… weird.
then he gets 4 million from the Pats and goes out and gets 14 tackles and 1 sack. Yes, 1 sack. and plays 3 snaps in teh AFC title game. So what exactly did the Jets do wrong? Seems to me like he was treated fairly for a decade. And when you get 14 tackles, you only deserve the minimum. Thanks for the years of service but dont come back. You a Patriot and go run to their fan base to kiss your A$$ when you retire. clown

    • avatar nickballs2000 says:

and if he ever tries to come back, im gonna be Booing. i cheered him for a decade, loved the guy and gave him the credit he deserved. But he ran to the Pats and then spent the whole season singing their praises. BOOOOOOO

  47. avatar nickballs2000 says:

i root for the name on the helmet, not the name on the back of the jersey. hes a Pat, period.

  48. avatar Super T says:

If he’s back with the Pats next season it will be for a lot less than $4M.

  49. avatar Private Jet says:

Can’t blame Ellis for feeling disrespected … then again I can’t blame the FO for not offering him $4 mil either. We need that cap space Shaun!

  50. avatar blee says:

I for one never want to see Ellis near the Jets organization in the future.. ever.

thanks for the yrs of service, you got rich off of it. And then joined the enemies for 4 mil.

    good bye.

    • avatar joeyboy79 says:

Please they nickle and dimed a solid leader who gave his all to the jets! The Jets have done this to many. Loyalty has to be a two way street. The players have to look out for themselves, look at Revis.

      • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

lol, Loyalty? Coming from the Jet Fans who jump ship and hate on the team all the time.

Ugh, I loved the Big Cat while he was here, look it up, I always sang his praises. But he is a Pat now. For w/e reason, it doesn’t matter. He is a Pat.

Screw him, screw the Pats, and if before next training camp if Brady disappears for a few days and ends up in a ditch with sliced Achilles…i swear it wasn’t me. lol

  51. avatar Lukas says:

In the end he gets the last laugh if NE wins. Jets= embarrassment. ‘We will win the division and a SuperBowl.” You’re an embarrassment, join NE, you guys are going to win anything in those next ten years.

  52. avatar Glenn A says:

All players with skills towards the end of their career want to win the SB, Lets face it NE wins, and has the best chance year to year to win SB.
