Weatherford Won’t Stop

by Bassett on February 6th, 2012 at 11:16 am

Steve “King of the Shake Weight” Weatherford will not give up on kicking Mike Westhoff. Even after winning his Super Bowl ring, he’s more than happy to throw his old coach under the bus, according to the NY Post.

Fresh off a clutch, big-time performance in the Giants’ 21-17 Super Bowl XLVI win over the Patriots, the veteran punter had a message for Jets special-teams coach Mike Westhoff for letting him walk as a free agent last year.

“I’d like to thank him,” Weatherford said, breaking into a smile. “I appreciate his decision. I really appreciate it.”

Whatever. Weather was reheated dog crap last year in the playoffs.  If Weatherford had the kind of postseason he had this year with the Jets last year, then maybe he wouldn’t have had to wait a year to get his ring, and wouldn’t have to slag his former coach all the way along to do it.

excatly….Westy did not get rid of him; he got rid of himself based on his performance

    • avatar Sim Phony says:

      What Weatherford should be saying:

      Reese > Tannenbaum

How can a team with malcontents on offense (Jacobs) and defense (Osi) somehow get their stuff together for the good of the team?

  2. avatar Olerud_4_LIfe says:

Goodness. As weird as it seems, i actualyl wanted the pats to win cuz of cats like these. Weatherford u sucked at times last year, crucial times, thats why u were cut. I cant believe these guys actually cant enjoy their SB. They still must talk trash, and for the most part (besides weatherford this year), the giants guys talking trash are the ones that suck (jacobs and antrel rolle).

  3. avatar Wolf says:

    Eh, he’s got a point.

Westhoff is extremely overrated in a lot of ways. Our kickers and punters have ALWAYS sucked.

    • avatar Dave TN says:

Maybe partly b/c we have new ones every damn year. Weatherford won’t be proud of what he said when he thinks back on it, but maybe the Jets don’t have as much patience with their guys as they should.

      • avatar nyfinest314 says:

and why wouldn’t he be proud of it… He just won a Superbowl and looked great pinning the Pats deep a few times.

  4. avatar Feraro41 says:

Exactly…what is it with these guys? They just won a SB, doesn’t that say enough? Wny do these guys have to go out of their way to be a-holes about it?

I love how Rex and the Jets have been excoriated for over a month now for their “trash talking”, yet what have we heard since the end of the season? I couldn’t believe it was SB week, and there were guys from both teams talking about the Jets. Seriously?

Even during the game, there were NY writers like Cimini and Serby, who were tweeting wise ass remarks about Rex and the Jets. Criticize the Jets and Rex for their performance, but why do they have to make it personal?

I guess if there was any doubt the Jets are now relevant, those doubts are gone. I can’t imagine there were too many people who cared what Eric Mangini thought about the last Giants/Pats SB, yet seemingly everyone in the football world cared what Rex thought.

I cannot wait for next season. Cannot wait.

    • avatar chakrabs says:

You can say whatever you want if you win. No one said much about the Jets and their “trash talk” when they went to 2 straight AFC champ games, but once they missed the postseason everyone’s knives came out.

      • avatar Kyle says:

Um, I heard plenty of complaints and criticisms of Rex and Jets’ trash talking because they ONLY went to AFC championship and did not win the SB. Not sure where you’ve been the last two years.

      • avatar nyfinest314 says:

LMAO… Rex trash talking was all over ESPN even when they went to the AFC championship… SMH

    • avatar nyfinest314 says:

Why do they make it personal?? Because Rex makes it personal… Don’t sit there and dish it, and whine when someone is dishin it back at ya… Tell ya Coach to shut the hell up if u don’t wanna hear people come back at Rex when he fails… It seems Ladanian Tomlinson is the only person who had sense to understand that all the guarantees were actually putting pressure on the players, and he was the only player MAN enough to say it.

    • avatar Bdnyc says:

You cant wait for next season?

  5. avatar Wolf says:

Because the Jets and Rex talked a lot of smack but the team didn’t show up this year.

It was embarrassing. And now we must suffer. Get used to it, it’s part of life when you’re a Jet fan.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Uh, Westhoff never said anything about Weatherford. I get that teams may want to bring up the Jets at every possibly moment, but Westy did nothing but revive this idiot’s career. This is how he pays him back, apparently.

      • avatar Wolf says:

How did Westy revive his career exactly? I’m pretty sure we can credit Tom Quinn and Larry Izzo for that.

        • avatar Brendan says:

….because Weatherford is a punter, and Westhoff coaches the special teams? What does Larry Izzo have to do with Weatherford being a journeyman punter who was in three different teams the season before being picked up by the Jets then becoming a respectable starting NFL punter? Pretty sure that was Westy, call me crazy though.

          • avatar Wolf says:

You can credit his current Giants special teams coaches with any turnaround he’s had in his career, because his best statistical season came this year.

He obviously doesn’t like Westhoff because of something personal between them. I’m sure the feeling is mutual.

What is so aggravating to you about what he said anyway?

      • avatar brian says:

        Ummmmmmmmm:

“I was very happy in Steve with some things he did and very, very disappointed in others,” Westhoff said. “To tell you the truth, I don’t want to be 23rd. We’re not 23rd in anything else. Wherever we are, I am trying to get better, so that’s why we made the move.”

“I was disappointed with some of the performances he had at the end of the year,” Westhoff said. “It wasn’t very good. You were there. You were up in New England. The ball went straight out (of bounds)….There were times when he just didn’t do the job. I was looking to get better than what he did at that point in time. Wasn’t good enough, in my opinion. It wasn’t. I don’t want to be 23rd in the NFL. That’s where he was.”

        • avatar Brendan says:

This isn’t trashing Weatherford, it’s being honest. Weatherford didn’t seem to have any issues with these comments when they were originally said, only once the Giants were winning playoff games.

          • avatar Nick says:

And Weatherford IS really happy about Westy’s decesion. So how is one just being honest and the other one not?

I’m going back to ignoring you. It does no good to argue with a stone.

            • avatar Brendan says:

Great, ask me if I care if the great Nick of TJB ignores me.

If you seriously think Weatherford didn’t trash (or at least call out) Westy this past week, I’d be happy to link to the TJB threads that discussed them. Or you can just scroll through the past 2-3 pages, since it happened last week.

Westy was honest, these comments from Weatherford are clearly just another set of comments in a running dialogue he has that’s intended to undermine Westy as a special teams genius.

            • avatar Weeks says:

If you’re going to blatantly ignore something then why take the time to go out of your way to talk to that person? Never understood the logic behind that and never will. This is why so much garbage has gone on the past few weeks Nick and comments of that nature don’t help.

          • avatar Just Plain Tired says:

Are you serious? You take a professional and publicly belittle his ability, and that’s not trashing?

I’m not saying Westy was wrong, because Weatherford sucked in the playoffs, but come on. Let’s not go homer on every single issue that comes up.

          • avatar Seibol says:

Right, and Weatherford was being honest when he said he was happy with Westhoff’s decision

        • avatar Bent says:

This is pretty embarrassing for Weatherford.

Yes, you won the Superbowl and kicked well in the big game. Redemption!

…but can you tell me what in the above comments was wrong at the time he said them?

You thought you were better than that and went on to prove that you are better than that, but if you didn’t want him to make those comments, you could have avoided it by not playing like THAT.

          • avatar Just Plain Tired says:

Here’s what was wrong. 23rd in what? He was the best “coffin corner” guy I’ve seen here in a long time, until the playoffs. Was that not the plan, to cut out the returns?

He wasn’t good in the playoffs. That had nothing to do with being 23rd in whatever.

            • avatar Bent says:

I do agree with you there, but he still was 23rd statistically, which obviously disappointed Westhoff, as did the fact he kicked awfully against the Pats and in the postseason, and maybe cost them a game with his fake punt faux pas.

So, I don’t think pointing to a true stat, saying he “disappointed” in some of the things he did and saying he didn’t get the job done was as scathing as it could have been.

Having said that, maybe he got a roasting behind the scenes, which would make this pettyness more understandable, although he should still probably rise above it.

          • avatar Just Plain Tired says:

It’s kind of like cutting Rhodes because he’s too Hollywood, and then going out and making movies yourself.

            • avatar Brendan says:

I don’t see how those two situations are similar at all.

              • avatar Just Plain Tired says:

Do as I say, not as I do.

Westhoff’s game plan on punts was to keep them pinned in. No returns. Weatherford did that for the most part, until the playoffs. You want to cut him for that, okay, but don’t blame it on his averages when he executed the plan he was given.

Same thing with Rhodes. Focus needs to be here, unless you’re the head coach in which case I guess there’s different rules.

Not an exact analogy, but you get the gist.

            • avatar Bent says:

Well, he was traded actually and by Tannenbaum, not Rex, although I do kind of wish Rex hadn’t done that either. Rhodes was cut because it was affecting the team and his on-field performance. I’m pretty certain Rex’s cameo in Sandler’s crappy looking new film will not have any wider reaching implications like that.

            • avatar Sim Phony says:

              That. Was. Awesome!

  6. avatar NYJetFan17 says:

weatherford says this crap because its the only way he’ll get a quote in the paper. why else would a trolling Post reporter want a quote from a punter? stay classy steve.

  7. avatar spent says:

He better not push Westy too far. Weatherford would get his butt kicked if he set the old man off.

  8. avatar frankc says:

weatherford should quit it now. he made his point. Westhoff should tone down the arrogance as he’s good but after last year-not great.

  9. avatar Tk says:

please take away the mic from Weatherford. No one cares what a punter has to say.

  10. Congratulations, Weatherford!!! Now try to enjoy this superbowl victory with some HUMILITY!

  11. You know, if my ex-boss said negative things about me (he sucks, we can do better), i’d have a grudge too..

The title of your article is deceptive.. Suggesting Weatherford spouts off on his own, all the time..

Let’s keep perspective… Interviewer asks, “what, if anything, would you say to Mike Westoff who cut you last year” Weatherford, “I’d like to thank him”..

From Weatherford’s perspective, i’d say the same thing, feel the same way.. And if that’s salt in the wounds still from our team cutting a good punter, for a FAR worst one (in the name of finding a better guy) well, that’s an “us” problem..

If anything, i’m rethinking Westy’s judgment when it comes to kicking talent… Cause, it’s been awhile since we had any good kickers or punters…

  12. avatar brian says:

As I see it, Westhoff, after Weatherford left, basically said that Weatherford sucked. Okay, probably true. But why say it? Why kick a player when he’s gone. I don’t blame Weatherford at all. It’s typical. Rex and Westhoff talk trash, and on the ultimate stage, Giants players and fans alike are having the ultimate revenge. I can’t blame them.

  13. avatar PA Matt says:

I’m backing Weatherford over Westy here. And, more importantly, I’m taking Weatherford over Conley.

  14. avatar brian says:

How can you guys complain when Westhoff dumped on the man after he was gone. Again, the Jets talked in the offseason, now the Giants are having the ultimate revenge:

  15. avatar AKA...Drew says:

To be fair Westhoff made comments publicly about Weatherford after he wasn’t retained by the Jets.

If Weatherford wants to throws a few jabs after having a successful Super Bowl winning season then so be it. He looks a little tacky sinced it’s continued for a few weeks now but whatever.

  16. avatar brian says:

Again, basically Westhoff said Weatherford sucks. Now, after winning the Superbowl, Weatherford is rubbing it in. I can’t balme him. The Jet smack talking is coming back to hit them in the face. And we’re getting upset about that?

  17. avatar AKA...Drew says:

I think Ben Graham took the high road after Westhoff really killed him pubicly and Graham went on to have a really good year punting Arizona to a Super Bowl.

  18. avatar tish says:

What is with this chicken spit? The Giants achieved the goal that all 32 teams set out to accomplish. If they want to boast, dance ridicule and carry on like non-professionals, they earned that right. I would guess that Jet players and fans would act the same way. In a week all talk will turn to next season. What can’t be taken away from them is the trophy. Hopefully next year it will remain at the New Stadium, only this time with the team in Green and White.

  19. avatar pedro says:

Point is, Westhoff criticized guy who didn’t perform well under his tutelage. Guy gets fired, picked up by G-men, who he helps to the promised land. Maybe his point is that with better coaching he might have done the same for the Jets. Instead, we get the wonderful TJ Conley. Maybe Westy’ll cut TJ next and he’ll also go on to the SB with another team. Maybe Westy is really the one who sucks. Just sayin.

  20. avatar lead the league in fcking wins says:

who flippin cares what the punter has to say? most of them are year to year in terms of performance. weatherford sucked for us last year plain and simple. good for him for being lucky enough to be signed by a team that ended up winning the superbowl.

  21. avatar lynschrstphr says:

    Dude…enjoy the moment and STFU…

  22. avatar klecko71 says:

I know MANY giants fans who dont even know their special teams coachs name (quinn)

and WHY?? bc ask EVERY giants fan if they think they have good special teams!!!

my bro a giant fan…and for YEARS has hated their special teams. weatherford taking shots at a guy who is widely considered one of the best at his job is a joke.

Quinn was not the “reason” weatherford was better this year. and weatherford should shut the hell up already…he is a punter for christs sake..

  23. avatar Just Plain Tired says:

Giants won, we didn’t. They get to talk. i don’t care if it’s the waterboy or the punter doing the talking.

Jets brought this upon themselves. Now let’s see if they’re good enough to do anything about it.

  24. avatar Revis and Butthead says:

its ok guys weatherford takes performance enhancing drugs i guarentee he gets suspended for 4 games next year

  25. avatar Jetsfan29 says:

I get that the giants won and weatherford simply answered a question, but when he ran it instead of punting that was not westys call it was his, not to mention his horrid performance in the playoffs, dude is only relevant because his team won the super bowl. It’s a shame that he still has hard feelings over being let go when he didn’t earn his spot back in the first place, had it gone the other way I wonder what Sean Ellis and James idhegdibo would be saying publicly? Probably worse! None of this matters, gang green needs to step up and play and let the small stuff go! All I took from last nights game is this… Stop gronkowski and put pressure on Brady and we can win! Pass rushers please!!!

  26. avatar Zartan says:

Winning it all is for bragging rights! You can’t boast and brag till you do so.

  27. avatar Daniel Krauss says:

Let him brag but the truth about him is being showed. He’s a dick

  28. avatar JetsAreMyLife says:

Quit being an ass Steve. But whatever. I agree that it was stupid to let him go. He was bad in the playoffs but throughout last year he was a very good punter. Sorry but I would have taken this douchebag over Conley ever time.

    • avatar WW85 says:

+1> He had a couple of bad games, but overall I thought he’d been solid.

More importantly, I don’t think any coach should comment negatively on a player who has been cut. It can affect their future job prospects. Cut a guy & that’s that. Be professional.

      • avatar CPL593H says:

This. Weatherford is returning the Westy comments with interest. It’s kind of petty, but obviously the original comments by Westhoff stung him badly or Weatherford wouldn’t be nursing such a grudge. It was unprofessional of Westhoff to slag off on Weatherford after cutting him. Can’t blame Weatherford, even though the classy thing to do would be to let it go, at least in the press.

  29. avatar OldGuyJetFan says:

Yeah and next year he’ll try a fake punt on his own again, get stopped short of 1st down and Coughlin will cut his ass.

Enjoy it while you can Stevie boy, punters in the NFL are buses and subways, theres another one coming real soon.

  30. avatar boozer says:

i’d be pissed at my old team too if I wanted to stay and they said those things about me.

Needless to say, He was money during the super bowl.

    • avatar revisfan says:

what did you want westhoff to say when they asked him why weatherford wasnt back? that he was an excellent punter and they mindlessly let him go? westhoff obviously thought they could improve at the position and thats what he told the media. he didnt make a mistake wanting to improve. he made a mistake with not having as good a replacement. so weatherford just get over it already

  31. avatar revisfan says:

i happened to like weatherford as the jets punter and shakeweight master but hes gotta know when to stop playing the disrespect card. he obviously is very bitter and clearly thinks highly of westhoff otherwise he wouldnt care that he was let walk and wouldnt have mentioned him at every opportunity since the jets game. steve, if youre reading this, enjoy the win because whenever your team is expected to do anything and arent flying under the radar they suck. and keep shanking em like you did for the jets in the biggest games and even in the nfc champ game. keep swearing openly and publicly to prove that the giants organization isnt classier than any other. and dont get too excited, because your heart rate might get crazy again and i dont think tynes can punt.

  32. avatar joeyboy79 says:

It all doesnt matter now, its done. Weatherford has a ring and is happy. He played great for the giants! We are left wth TJ. That sums it all up and is the reality.

  33. avatar Kyle says:

Now I know what Kim Kardashian feels like. We didn’t do anything but everybody wants to talk about us.

  34. avatar keator says:

Not gonna lie, Knowing that Fat ass Shaun Ellis gets no rings made my night..

  35. avatar Private Jet says:

I don’t know what the big deal is. Someone asked him a question and he gave an honest answer. I don’t think anyone would argue that Giants are a far better team than the Jets this season and he’s happy to be on it. He even contributed to the Giants SB victory, so what’s not to be happy about?

  36. avatar John says:

Weatherford has a ring and Westhoff doesn’t.

  37. avatar Seibol says:

In fairness, Westhoff has gone out of his way to criticize Weatherford, so you really have to take off the green colored glasses.

  38. avatar TOS9987 says:

I wish wetherford was still on this team he was good . how would you feel if at your job keept interviwing for you position .

I dont like that thes lower level players that play key roles are leaving . They also seemed to piss of calahan amoung others its not looking good

  39. avatar boozer says:

So does this mean you’re gonna change the password for the chat room?

  40. avatar rose says:

Why wouldn’t Weatherford do whatever he wants?

Westhoff looks like a dumbass for letting him go now that he had a key role in beating Patriots. Oh, I’m sureee TJ Conley could have done that, bros.

  41. avatar Randy says:

You think anyone is going to remember the Punter for the Giants years from now?NO!!!!!!

Please already..Weatherford is an average punter. The reason he was cut was because he was terrible.Enough already. The Punter will not be known for winning that Superbowl.Eli Manning will.

  42. avatar Randy says:

You know something..the Lockout really screwed the Jets, when I really think about it.Most of our key guys were all free agents and instead of keeping everyone intact and making a great run this past season..we had to suffer from the Salary Cap.Think about who we lost..

    Edwards
    Woody(Retired)
    Richardson
    Weatherford
    Cotchery
    Jason Taylor
    Jenkins(Retired)
    Ellis

That is a Huge Chunk of the Core right there and cleary was the reason we had an 8-8 year.

  43. avatar joeyboy79 says:

Very true but in a close game, those punts that pinned them back really hepled big time! Its a team effort and he excelled at his job! Thats all one can do! Thats why the giants picked him up and have had nothing but good to say about him since his first game with them.
