Barron Injured

by Steiny on February 8th, 2012 at 8:22 am

Many mock drafts have the Jets taking Alabama safety Mark Barron with the 16th pick in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Well, that now seems extremely unlikey. Joe Everett of RookieDraft.com is reporting that Barron will be out of football until July/August with what he is “calling a double sports hernia.”

Just heard some bad news on S Mark Barron #Alabama that he has a double sports hernia and will be out until at least July/August #NFLDraft

This might be a blessing in disguise. Barron will obviously  fall in the draft. Now the Jets will be able to take a different player at #16, and hope that Barron will fall to them in the second round. If they are really enamored with him and feel he will go off the board before they pick in the 2nd, they can even move up a few spots.

I wouldn’t be against that move at all. A legit 1st round talent that you get in the 2nd would be a steal. This way, the Jets can look into signing a Laron Landry or Michael Griffin during free agency, while also resigning Jim Leonhard. Nobody knows the defense better than Jimmy. They can use him to teach Barron the defense, while still giving him ample time to recover.

well come on down laron landry!!

Poor kid. Just cost himself a lot of money. And if the report is correct, then it’s AT LEAST July/August. Are we really willing to wait until late September to throw a kid on the field who missed the entire offseason? Still a steal if we can get him the second round, I guess.

Kind of worries me now pats have 2 late first round picks, could use one of them to pick him up and it wouldn’t be a bad move for them.

    • avatar Harvlis says:

That is true. I was hoping that this would work out for the Jets. Instead of having to use #16 to pick him, we could get an O-lineman or a pass-rusher with our first rounders and possibly get him with a second or third round pick. Unfortunately, we are the Jets and if things went smoothly, it would be a miracle.

This is awful news I really wanted Barron.
Its better to hear this now then 2 days after the draft.

  5. avatar deuce4417 says:

a rookie safety is n ot going to fix the position. bring in a vet, griffen and or landry. resign jimmy and use smith as a backup

  6. avatar Kevino says:

If we can grab him in the 2nd or 3rd round, then all the better!

  7. avatar Davidus1 says:

We really have to stop worrying about the Pats and the draft. There’s 30 other teams that we need to think about as well. Besides you’ve got to think that the Pats need a WR more, but who knows.

As for Barron, there is obviously a reason why he is falling to the 2nd round or further, and NFL teams have been extremely risk averse. That’s why players are always sliding. To me, it’s ideal that Barron could learn and recover on the sidelines and potentially be a late season addition. His contract would also be REALLY attractive so I would love to get him under these circumstances rather than in the first round and healthy.

  8. avatar Bob Kole says:

Sorry for the kid, but at least now we will focus on pass rushing DE or OIB.

  9. avatar Marcus says:

    Our 16 and 47 for the Browns’ 22, 37 and 100. Points are even…

    22 -> Whitney Mercilus
    37 -> Mark Barron

Sounds like a plan to me.

  10. avatar Lam Jones says:

at least it settles the worry about whether Barron is worth a 1st round pick. I hope we go with a pass rusher, but if Decastro falls to us we could make it work with Slauson at RT (he played both tackle spots in college http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/jets/2009/04/jets-take-versatile-slauson-wi.html).

Sign Landry, rather have a proven commededity then a rookie that wont cost the bank to sign. It wont be cheap but it also wont be a redicolous price and what landry will bring to the table for us will give us that physicality and tenacity that we have been missing. I wouldn’t mind having the 2 of them back there if we can get lucky and get him with our 2nd pick. We need an outside the olb in the first season. I like Ingram but would settle with Mercilus, definite no to upshaw not as good of an athlete and at olb I want a sick athlete and a play maker. If we go olb then safety, we have to sign an Ot in Fa then because that is our biggest need on offense. I also was thinking what maybe could be a stretch and maybe I’m wrong but ithink would work is because I think Kyle Wilson is struggling alittle but even though he got better I think he is playing out of position in the slot I feel like if he were playing on theoutside he would be playing at very high level. What if they put him in cromes spot, signed Landry so you have your physical run stopping safety who can also cover, then you stick cromartie at the free safety, with his athletisism and size have him cover these dominant tight ends and we can also have him rome the secondary and make plays on the ball, I actually tthink he would be nasty a safety and if the 4 of them were together we have by far the best d back field in the league. Lastly, we would sign a guy that can cover slot and that’s what he does, find a free agent that has primarily played the slot and is good at it
Let me know what you think about that I dont think its to crazy.

  12. avatar JetsFanDan says:

I think it is good news for us, because now he should be available later, and we can try to trade down if no one interestes us at #16. Def need to draft a big time safety this year, that is our biggest position of need.

  13. avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

Better for us, just pray tht the GM doesn’t go all in like it’s Texas hold-em with the picks to get one. I would still pursue Alex Barron . A hernia in general is far from career threatening. People don’t thoroughly evaluate players by combine and pro days anyway. You have game tape and Nick Saban’s opinion; even get opinions from Alabama’s opponents in the SEC. Could be our second David Harris you know. Keep him on the radar. You would be stupid to jump to the next ranked safety and say they’re better. It’s football evaluation, not crude snatch-grab, price gouching hurricane/twister items off the rack.

    • avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

Right now we don’t have patience for development players. If you evaluate a prospect as a “definite”, then fine. Other than that, stop putting dead weight on the roster and cap. That’s the most stupid reason for a veteran to get cut. Towards Ducasse, etc.

      • avatar Brendan says:

So you want immediate impact, but want the Jets to draft a player who won’t even step foot on the field until the middle of training camp, at the earliest?

        • avatar Le' Sean Roberts says:

I’m not saying he’s Revis in his rookie season, but it’s not as bad as drafting the second rank safety coming out. A freaking hernia man, not an ACL.

  14. avatar jerk says:

Yea I guess, but wouldn’t you rather sign Landry over drafting baron. Yea cromartie is good covering speed and man to man but with his size and athletisism shouldn’t struggle with being a ball hawk and would be awesome if he was able to do this but would never happen, I.just feel like Wilson could be used to a higher level. We do need 2 safeties though so.if we could get both baron n landry I’m fine with that
We also.have to get an olb an ot even if we resign Maybin we have to get to the qb this year and that will also help the secondary and I think they would be dominant with a pass rush if we even get one of those safeties.

    • avatar Bent says:

I don’t see Landry as great value for money and I don’t really think the Jets will prioritize safety that highly in terms of spending. However, I would agree that it would be nice to have a veteran back there rather than a rookie, although it would also be good to get a young player they can develop into a future starter too, perhaps later on in the draft.

      • avatar Brendan says:

I want nothing to do with Landry. The only thing worse than having cheap players play poorly, is having expensive players not play at all.

  15. avatar jerk says:

Imagine Maybin and one of these first round talents at olb on third down getting after Brady.

  16. avatar Chris says:

Potentially great news. They can now get either a tackle, olb or a wr/hb in round 1, and get Barron in round 2, or even 3 if his injury seems like it can keep him out of a part of 2012.

If the Jets can come out of this draft with a potential stud safety and maybe a potential stud olb and/or rt, this team will have a great draft.

  17. avatar john says:

I think Iloka or Harrison are better fits for the Jets D then Barron. One or both of them should be avaliable in round three so that leaves rounds 1 and 2 for OLB and OT picks.
Have any of you looked at Darell Scott? He is a RB from USF. He is 6’1″, 239lbs. This kid ran a 4.32 40 in 2008, broke just about every Ca. HS rushing record. He has had some issues but now seems to be on the right track. He is 25 lbs heavier now but is real solid. Looks like a late round pick that could turn into a steal.

    • avatar JACK THE FOOTBALL GURU says:

I think if we want a RB, it shouldn’t be another late “steal” of the draft. Someone who can contribute now by taking a significant number of carries. Otherwise, Powell is satisfactory as a 3 RB

  18. avatar jetsetradio says:

laron landry is a slightly more athletic version of eric smith no thanks hope we get michael griffin regardless of what happens.
hope we can get barron in the 2nd round.

  19. avatar Revis Christ says:

Thank god there is no possibility of the Jets wasting their first round pick on this dude

  20. avatar jerk says:

W.e.ill take any good veteran safety.who is an athlete and can cover. Michael Griffin would be a great signing also and hope they just take care of this safety issue but Michael griffin actually would.bebour best bet in fa.

  21. avatar john says:

What about Branch from Oakland? I think he is better then Landry or Griffin.

  22. avatar Lam Jones says:

Griffin would be ideal, but putting that much money into a FA means it would be bargain basement or draft for the other Safety spot.

I know it isn’t on quite the same subject, but Mike Scifres is a free agent… could we get Westhoff an above average punter for his last few seasons?

  23. avatar Bob Vila says:

George Iloka in the the 2nd, Decastro or Mike Adams in the 1st.

Of course we need a rangier, taller FS to cover the Gronks of the world. And of course we need a faster, better pass-rushing OLB to pressure the Brady’s of the world.

But people need to think about the fact that despite out struggles at OLB and S we still had a top 10 defense and a bottom 10 offense. We should be focusing on offense in the 1st, not beefing up a unit that is already relatively solid.

    • avatar JACK THE FOOTBALL GURU says:

Well you have a point, our defense is what wins us games, not our offense. There are some gaping holes in our defense at the moment, and it is certainly getting old, especially the linebackers. I think priority #1 should be make sure that D stays elite.

    • avatar Brendan says:

I understand the thinking here, and while I’d normally agree with it, pass rusher is a vital position for this defense. It’s not a luxury, and the fact that the team has been so good as a defense without one is a testament to Rex’s abilities as a defensive mind.

But even Rex needs help, and that help needs to come in the form of elite pass rushing talent. The offense has the tools to be a much better unit that it ranked last year, but so does the defense. If you give Rex a college-Suggs type player (meaning a pure pass rusher out of college, a guy who can put pressure on QBs immediately in the NFL) with the potential to be pro-Suggs like player, you have to take him. If you give Rex a defense that can generate pressure with four guys, you open up the entirety of his defensive playbook. You’d see a lot more gambling and traps set, and I would think a lot more big turnovers. And his blitz package would again become incredibly effective, because when there is the threat of pressure without a blitz, a blitz can be a lot more effective.

Depending on who is there, I want a pass rusher early and often in the draft. This is a deep FA class so if the Jets can find players at other positions of need that way, they’d be set up to pick an elite pass rushing prospect and then move on to other positions of need while locking up a chance at their own JPP.

They need a better RT, but a poor RT can be gameplanned for. There are also some veteran guys who have rumors about them being waived, so there may be a couple of options there. They need another WR, but if they keep Keller he’s essentially the #2, with Kerley looking like a great future slot receiver. You need a deep threat, and that doesn’t have to be costly or an elite overall WR. You need a safety, which is where you may have to spend your money. And you need a pass rusher. There are a lot of pass rushers in this draft, so using an early pick on the highest rated one on their draft board could lock up the biggest glaring hole, IMO, on the entire team.

  24. avatar john says:

I like your first 2 picks Bob, but Harrison of ND might be better then Iloka.
