Roster Rundown: #77 Austin Howard

by Bassett on February 8th, 2012 at 4:05 pm

Position: Offensive Tackle
Height / Weight: 6’7″ 333 lbs.
Age: 24 / Experience: 2
College: Northern Iowa

2012 Contract Status: Under contract / Jets own rights

2011 Analysis: Austin was a more recent acquisition at the end of the season. He was signed off the Ravens practice squad in November, after being signed as a UDFA by the Eagles the year before.  Austin Howard started one game in 2010, but was cut by the Eagles as he tried to slim down for new Eagles OL Howard Mudd (formerly of the Colts) this season. Austin didn’t make the final cut, and then was signed by the Ravens, and then there to the Jets.  Austin Howard didn’t see action with the Jets in 2011.

2012 Outlook: Since we didn’t really see him in 2011, it’s hard to know what to expect, but it’s a sign that the Jets are looking to bolster their backup tackles going forward.  Asst. GM Scott Cohen has set up a Philly pipeline since he came over to the Jets and Howard might be just one more of those players.  Of course, the team has to start thinking about backup linemen they can maintain rights on on the cheap.  So maybe with some time, effort and a Offensive Coordinator like Tony Sparano, a guy like Howard could become cheap backup option for this unit.

Random Thought: I don’t necessarily think Howard is the next coming of Brandon Moore, but I always do pay attention to players they sign down the stretch of a season to their active roster and protect going into the next year.  It’s a sign they want him to make the roster the following year.

Im sure they are wanting to get someone up in the pen in case hunter doesnt take the pay cut or Turner decides to go elsewhere…..doesnt hurt to have the guy go through your entire offseason program and see what you’ve got….good move. He sure has the size to be a road grader at RT….

  2. avatar santoniosipod says:

just read that hunter was not cut, and his contract now guaranteed…explanation?

    • avatar Bent says:

I saw those reports and they don’t take into account the fact that the Jets might have just restructured that deal.

Doesn’t mean they did, but it would seem likely.

      • avatar santoniosipod says:

is it possible that we will get confirmation on whether the deal was restructured, or is it something that could be kept mum like the schotty extension last year?

        • avatar Bent says:

It would leak out as soon as they logged it with the NFLPA database. If they haven’t restructured the deal, they can still do so at a later date to reduce the current year cap charge, but that money would still be guaranteed.

There’s no such database for coach salaries.

          • avatar hank/naples says:

            Bent:

I really can’t see what the huge issue is with Hunters $2.5 million salary.

With the tens of millions that have been given away by Tannenbaum (overpaid)to several undeserving players over the last few years, I think it ABSURD to deny this gut his due!!!

I mean, NO ONE, NOBODY was a harder worker, tried harder, was a better team mate and contributed more towards team chemistry than Hunter!!!

He should NOT be handed RT spot, but should DEFINITELY be paid his well deserved $$$!!!!

Talk about building team unity, he is a very DESERVING place to start!!!

    • avatar frustratedjetfan says:

I hope you read / heard wrong w/r/t Hunter. Why would they guarantee Hunter’s contract unless they’re afraid Mayflower movers would snatch him up?

If true, could Mulligan be guaranteed next?

  3. avatar joeyboy79 says:

Please, just dont let him start again at RT. If he does, I think Sanchez would just quit.

  4. avatar JACK THE FOOTBALL GURU says:

If Antrel Rolle gets cut, would he fit in well here? Big mouth, not a great season, but could potentially come cheap?

  5. avatar MikeB says:

Hunbter was a quality backup and did well filling in for Woody. Obviously he could not take the next step and start. hopefully he realized that he would not get starter’s money from anyone and took a cut to stick around as a backup. Say what you want about Tanny’s player evaluations. No one is better at the cap. No way he keeps Hunter around at full freight.

  6. avatar Johnny Reefer says:

Hey, off topic but can one of you name the Teams we lost too this year?

Oh also, add in what their record was, and how far they made it in the playoffs, if they made it.

    Thank you.

    • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

btw i already know, i would just like somebody else to type it. If i do it, it’d just be seen as stupidness from a positive poster.

      • avatar cgrec says:

dont really see where you’re going with this, but here you go.

        Raiders, 8-8, didnt make playoffs
Ravens 12-4, lost AFC Championship game
        Patriots 13-3, Lost Super Bowl
        Patriots again
        Broncos, 8-8, lost Divisional Round
        Eagles, 8-8, didnt make playoffs
        Giants, 9-7, won Super Bowl
        Dolphins, 6-10, didnt make playoffs

        • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

ok, so out of our 8 loses.

3- of them were from teams in the superbowl.
2 others won at least 1 playoff game.
2 others ended up with the same record.
and the one team under 500 was a division rival we seem to always split with no matter what.

So we beat all the suppar teams?

Explain to me again, everyone, how we are on equal footing with the suppar teams?

          • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

not one of those loses, are ones you can say where “bad”.

Well maybe Philly cuz we got romped, but they had a hell of a lot of talent and speed.

Oakland even had a shot at the playoffs at season end too.

Hmm, yes, we have such a horrible team, because we went 8-8.

          • avatar hank/naples says:

            Again, reefer???

Lay off the wacky tabacky because that is the most convoluted logic I have EVER heard!!!!

I think somewhere there you are trying to say that we deserved to make the playoffs?!?!?

You’ve got to be stoned, right???

            • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

I’m tryin to say, we arent as bad as you all keep preaching we are.

We lost 8 tough games, 5 of them vs playoff teams.

btw, i’ve been completely sober the last 2 days! Hence me being more of a prick.

You seem like a good guy. I will try to tone down my pessimistic act. I can also be a pain, but it is not on purpose. My posts really reflect my true views. You might find this hard to believe, but I want a Jets SB so bad it hurts!

Good luck man, you seem very intelligent. It is just a matter of time, that you get what you want. Stay determined, like you are with jets and you will be fine!

Since it sounds like you do it pretty consistently, I think your going to have to wait longer than a month

yeah i know, but i dont have alot of body fat, and a fast metabolism.

I could prolly sneak in some stuff, just gotta keep it between 95-98 degrees.

              • avatar joeyboy79 says:

We didnt beat one team with an above.500 record.

                • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

and that pats only beat 1! and that was in the playoffs.

THE FACT IS WE BEAT THE SNOT OUT OF THE CRAP TEAMS! HOW COULD WE BE ONE OF THEM!

                  • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

IF YOU CAN’T SEE THAT AS A PURE FACT WE ARE NOT AS BAD AS YOU KEEP SAYING THERE IS NO HOPE!!

                  • avatar joeyboy79 says:

We are NOT crap, we are average.

                    • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

then why do you keep saying we need so much? That we are rebuilding now, that we aren’t close?

                    • avatar joeyboy79 says:

You misunderstood me. We need alot if we want to go all the way, but if we want mediocrity, we just need some holes filled to keep pace. Like Parcells says, if you dont improve in this league, you are getting worse. It all depends on ones objectives.

                    • avatar joeyboy79 says:

No doubt, the Jets are light years ahead of the mets. The Jets are not that far off. It’s all up to management. We have to sit tight and hope T has a great offseason. I really think with the giants winning, it will motivate the jets even more. As pessimistic as I am, I never give up! I, like the rest of us fans, will be following this offseason with a fine tooth comb.

                  • avatar joeyboy79 says:

I am not into excuses like we could have won some games that we dint which is true but like Dallas and Romo imploding and the Bills WR dropping that easy pass, we could have also lost two games. It is what it is, and as Parcells says, you are what your record says. We are ranked 17th power rankings and finished .500. That is as average as average can be.

I agree if management is on its game this offseason, we have the potential for a nice jump , but this season with all the changes and issues I dont expect a deep run at all. I do in 2013 if all goes well this season. Again, just my opinion.

                    • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

I’m just so sick of seeing everyone acting like we went 3-13.

                      It’s really pissin me off.

But thats the point dude, in the NFL **** happens.

We should not be trying to implode the organization like some of you keep saying. We need to be consistent with our coaches our QB and our GM.

THE WORST POSSIBLE THING IS TO FIRE REX AND MR.T, cut Sanchez and start all over, we will NEVER sniff a super bowl in this decade if we do that.

                    • avatar joeyboy79 says:

I will admit, anything can happen. I am just going on what I have seen and the current circumstances. I also thought the giants were done at 7-7. Its like lotto lately, you never know. I just go by whats more probable though. I still root like hell for the jackpot!

                    • avatar Johnny Reefer says:

lol who didn’t think the Giants were done?

The went 1-5 in the middle of the year.

Again, the NFL is crazy, things happen that sometimes the team has no control over.

FANS NEED TO STOP WITH THIS ALWAYS NEGATIVE WAYS. IDC HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN A FAN! HOW LONG YOU SUFFERED!

You’ll wanna see how to not run a good orgaztion go look at the Mets.

The Jets are 10000000000000 light years ahead of the Mets.

          • avatar greenman says:

For the past six years we played both teams in the superbowl during the regular season. That has to be some kind of record.

Starters can come from any where. Nothing wrong with having plenty of competition.

  10. avatar Jets babyyy says:

Off Topic if at pick 16.
These guys are up there who do the Jets get?

    Nick Perry
    DeCastro
    Upshaw
    Melvin Ingram
    Whitney Mercilus
    Devon Still

I know not all of them will be there at 16 but some might fall maybe you guys can put them in order who would you guys, like for the Jets to get 1st just curious.

    Thx Go Jets

    • avatar Brendan says:

      Throw out Perry and Still.

If you take DeCastro, you plug him in at LG and within 2-3 years you have the best left side (counting center) in the NFL.

Upshaw/Ingram/Mercilus are all pretty different pass rushers with different pluses and minuses. I prefer Mercilus of the three.

      • avatar juunit says:

Man, if you saw Still play, you wouldn’t say to throw him out. He leaped and bounded up from the third round to a potential top pick this season. The guy is the truth.

    • avatar patd says:

Upshaw. That is a no brainer.

  11. avatar Wolf says:

There is actually a good chance Richardson will fall.

    • avatar Jets babyyy says:

I personally doubt it that he will if the Browns skip him up I will be very surprised. Or if everyone else skips him and he is there at 16 I will definitely be very surprised and jumping up and down to and hope we get him.

      • avatar Marcus says:

No way Cleveland takes him; they need a QB or a WR much more than an RB. He’ll be there when we’re picking. You can get equivalent production out of an undrafted free agent and a first round RB. I realize Trent Richardson is fantastic, but of the top 5+ rushers in the NFL this past year, none of them were drafted in the first round.

Plus, you’re talking 5-6 years out of a first round pick. It’s a waste.

        • avatar Jets babyyy says:

Sorry I forgot that they had a QB need.

But for some reason I don’t see him falling to 16 way to many teams would have to pass on him.

The other teams have needs as we do but if you see a Rb like Richardson out there what makes you they won’t do the same thing we would.

I am not against the idea but at the same time I don’t want to put my hopes up.

          • avatar Marcus says:

I see two primary possibilities for him being taken in the top half of the first round.

            1. Tampa Bay. They have a need at RB, clearly. Blount isn’t doing the job, and is an absolute nightmare in the passing game. However, they have a *much* more significant need at Cornerback, and if Morris Claiborne is available (I’d say 75% chance), it would be crazy to pass on him. He has a similar grade to Richardson on most boards.

            2. Kansas City. This depends entirely on the philosophy of the new offensive coaches they’ve got over there. I’m a huge fan of JC, but coming off of the surgery, it’s a risky proposition. Of course, this assumes they’ve managed to sign some WRs in Free Agency. All in all, I’d give it a 25% chance that he’s taken here.

So I think there’s a decent probability he’s available when we’re drafting, but I think taking him would be a *huge* mistake. You’re talking about a player with a definite cap on his elite level of play—4 years is pretty much it as far as RBs go. And even beyond that, draft pedigree has little if any correlation with production in the NFL for RBs.

You take a offensive lineman or a pass rusher, and you’ve got somebody that’s on the team for a substantial period of time.

It’s just a value proposition. Taking RBs in the first round is a waste of the picks’ value.

As for the question that started this,

            I vote:

            0. Jon Martin (He wasn’t on your list, but if he falls, I want him)
            1. DeCastro
            2. UpShaw
            3. Mercilus

And if none of them are there, trade down.

  12. avatar joeyboy79 says:

I am going to be honest, and will take the shots after my comments here and have no problem with it. I have been a jets fan for well over 3 decades and bleed green. As the years passed with no SB, I still kept the faith and stayed the course even though I became more critical of the organization and their ability to build a team that will win it all. I will not criticize the younger fans( even the wakcy tabacky delusionaries, lol) as I was like that also years ago and understand.I Overdosed on the koolaid too. However, the last several years I have seen a team that is more interested in just making headlines and going for big splashes without the core dedication that is required to build a top winning organization. The flashes and teases can only wet the appetites of the fans who haven’t seen it all and lived through decades of not getting over the hump. I can understand that, as I was once taken in by the smoke and mirrors, flashes and back to mediocrity, and the revolving door.

To sum it up, this is my last season to see if this organization is really dedicated to building a winning team without gimmicks, quick fixes and just dragging the fans along. I am not expecting miracles this season as I understand with all the issues that we have and that this season will be a putting it all together season and great if that’s the case, But, if we again go for the big splashes with all our needs in talent and depth and give away our precious picks like we have the last several years, I am taking leave of the jets until a new management comes in at the very top level and meaning even beyond T, like new ownership! I don’t want this team run like a political campaign, but a team committed to winning and understanding that it is the fans who give their blood sweat and tears with no reward other than their team achieving the dream.

Before you discredit me as a loyal fan, everyone has their threshold and I will not let your opinions sway me until you have been a fan for as long as I have. The saying that don’t judge, until you have walked in the persons shoes holds true.

In summary, I will sit patiently this offseason and monitor our moves, but if I see a smoke screen and ploys, I will move on until the wrecking ball comes in! We jet fans deserve a winning organization for our dedication/loyalty, and if the above organization doesn’t have that priority in the highest regard it’s their choice but I also have mine!
If some of you want just another afc appearance, but then right back to the drawing board the next year or two and are content with that, more power to you. It is what makes you happy. After 40 years, I want to see a team that at least is heading in the right direction.I dont think thats too much to ask.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Hold on, let me get my violin.

    • avatar Tom in Raleigh says:

Sigh. Some of is have been following the team for nearly that long, never got to the koolaid tank.

    • avatar nolan says:

Come on man, you know that year in and year out regardless of what happens you will still be a jets fan. I currently live in cleveland, and I have seen the fans here and I just feel sorry for them. They don’t have it half as good as we do but ill tell you right now, they are some loyal fans. Fact is we have made big splashes in the draft, without those we wouldn’t have some of the best people on our team. Difference maker like mangold and revis. Im pretty sure we traded up for them, correct me if im wrong. Wasn’t too sure about trading up for sanchez though. I don’t dislike sanchez, I just think he only will be an average or slightly above average qb in the nfl at best. He was so unproven in college, and certainly didn’t deserve such a high pick. True he does show flashes of brilliance, but those occasions usually are when they are down in the 4th. Either way if trent richardson drops to 16 I don’t see how we could pass him up. He would add a whole new dimention to our team. We would have a running back that was an all around threat. Good in the pass game, great runner, breakaway speed. I like greene and all but he is a liability in the pass game and defenses know that. Mcknight or tomlinson are really only threats in the pass game. Richarson’s addition would give us the much needed superstar on offense, cause its not holmes and its not sanchez. But that s if he drops. I feel like im rambling and im not sure how much sense I made but im tired its almost 5 and I haven’t been to sleep and I refuse to go back and proof read. Goodday sir. Oh and to the pot heads above, weed can stay in your system up to two months it varries depending on how fat you are. Thc is stored in your fat cells. Its not so hard to quit and with the economy these days a decent job is certainly worth giving it up. I love the stuff but I recently had to put that stuff down too.

Effectively resigning Holmes and Hunter at full price on the same day right after the Super Bowl will be horrible PR making hard core Jets fans like me question what the hell is going on. I thought we had a new direction, a new regime on offense. Holmes I can understand; Hunter I cannot. Better be something going on we don’t know about yet.

I’m sure I’m not breaking any new news but I jus read mark barron has a double sports hernia and that it might hurt his draft status anyone think we actually have a chance to get either a pass rusher or rt in the 1st round and mark barron in the 2nd
