Bengals Hire Mark Carrier

by Steiny on February 13th, 2012 at 1:04 pm

While there has been no official announcement yet, reports have been surfacing that the Jets have hired former Vikings defensive line coach Karl Dunbar to the same position. Now it appears that move is evident, as Mark Carrier, the Jets DL coach for the past two seasons, has left the Jets to become the defensive back coach in Cincinnati.

Bengals announce Mark Carrier as new DBs coach. Karl Dunbar is Jets D-line coach, but team hasn't announced changes for whatever reason #nyj

Carrier was a top safety during his playing days. A three time Pro Bowler and the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award, Carrier had a ton of success in the NFL. Thus, I never understood why he coached the defensive line for the Jets. Coaching defensive backs is where he belongs, and where he probably feels most comfortable. After the Dunbar news came out, people in the know were suggesting that Rex wanted to keep Carrier on the staff, possibly having him team up with Dennis Thurman and coach the defensive backs. However, it appears he felt it was time for a change, and thus accepted the job in Cincinnati.

We thank Mark for his contributions to the team over the past two seasons, and wish him all the best as he emabarks on the next chapter of his NFL coaching career.

Off Topic – Cimini wrote an article saying Jets are going to use saved cap money from last year and use it this year to get…(drum roll) Mario Williams.

    HAHAHAHA

    • avatar Brendan says:

Oh, we saw, he’s upping the idiot quota with each new article.

He’s also “breaking” news that was reported on TJB, oh, at least 6 months ago (“CAP SAVINGS FROM 2011 CARRIES OVER TO 2012!!!). But reporting that earlier would have killed all of his “Tanny sucks” articles.

  2. avatar Tk says:

Cimini is such a clown. I give him kudos for going with Mario Williams instead of Peyton. Way to think outside the box Rich.

    • avatar Harlan Lachman says:

Actually, Peyton is much more likely. There is no one with a huge cap number we could cut to get Mario.

OTOH, if we give up on Sanchez, we could use his entire cap savings plus the supposed left over from 2011, but not the 2.5 mil we wasted on turnstile Hunter to pay him. IIRC, that should at least equal $10+ mil of available dollars.

On the other hand, I think Peyton is too smart to come to a franchise that keeps a Wayne Hunter who could get him killed and an Eric Smith who could make his scores worthless on the roster.

      harlan

      • avatar Brendan says:

Every team has “a Wayne Hunter.”

      • avatar joeyboy79 says:

+1 Harlan, Hunter is nothing more than a serviciable back up thats why in 8 years he never broke the starting line up. T gambled and lost as it was a nightmare, just ask Mark. I am really surprised he is not on IR. Bents link yesterday really showed how terrible he really is. He will not start this season!!! He was ranked as one of the worst pass protectors and TOTALLY vulnerable against speed rushes. No way can I see the jets starting him. If they dont learn by last season there is no hope!

      • avatar Bent says:

IMO Hunter would start for the Colts. Turner would too. In fact both probably would have started for them in 2009 and 2010.

Manning’s ability to read blitz packages and get rid of the ball would render any perceived weakness in Hunter moot because he’s managed to avoid getting hit very much over the course of his career without ever having an offensive line as good as the Jets do now, let alone over the last few years.

  3. avatar Bob Kole says:

So have we hired Dunbar or not? And are we gaining or losing by this personnel change?

  4. avatar mucky moose says:

Maybe Mario will play at a discount to play for Rex.

  5. avatar elmoron says:

Would be great if we could get Williams, although Calais Campbell wouldn’t be bad either. Then grab an OLB during the first 3 rounds.

  6. avatar reality jet fan says:

I read dunbar hired by jets

  7. avatar mucky moose says:

The Jets need to grab an OLB in the 1st round. UPSHAW.

  8. avatar runleon29 says:

i’m not suggesting that the Bengals are anything to model one’s team after, but the hiring of a former pro-bowl DB to coach DB’s makes a little more sense. i hope Rex is learning that every position holds value. whether a position coach (carrier) or a late round draft pick (scotty mcknight), you have to take advantage of every opportunity to make your team better. only the arrogant or the ignorant waste such opportunities.

    • avatar runleon29 says:

thus….don’t be a fool and give a DB a DL coaching job because you want to be nice and don’t be an idiot and draft a WR that has a 0.0000% chance of making your active roster just because he’s your QB’s old roomate when there are positions on your team that need depth and competition. do you think bill belichik or tom coughlin waste valuable resources like that?

      • avatar nickballs2000 says:

so you saying we need to be more like the Bengals? u do know they one of the organizations with less success than us right?

      • avatar Lam Jones says:

        S. McKnight pick is tough to defend but considering the short offseason, picking a guy who already had worked with your QB with a 7th rounder is not a crime; 7s are often gambles.

And as far as Carrier, what about the DL play disappointed you? They handled the line of scrimmage consistently while Rex’s D is designed for the OLBs to make the majority of the plays in pash rush. I think they kept Carrier around because of his contribution to the defensive staff as a whole, but he certainly didn’t seem to be a liabilty as line coach.

        • avatar runleon29 says:

fair points. my thought is that DL is a lot about technique (hands, pad level, footwork, leverage, etc.) as good as they were, they could have been even better with experienced DL coaching.
          love your handle.

          • avatar Brendan says:

To be fair, Rex is a D-line savant, but I think he realized this year that having a “his guy” type of coach (Carrier), while serving a purpose early on in shaping the mentality of the team, ran its course.

This is probably just another step in Rex becoming that “complete coach” that people want him to be.

            • avatar runleon29 says:

i agree, brendan. i think it’s part of rex’s evolution as a head coach. i’m a rex guy and believe in him. as confident and brash as Rex is, he’s also humble enough to know that he has a lot to learn as a HC.

            • avatar Lam Jones says:

good point; Carrier, Brunell and maybe even Wayne Hunter are guys whose mentalities might have obscured the limitations of their usefulness. Funny, because the narrative has been that Rex and Tanny blow out character guys for even a slight upgrade.

              • avatar SackDance99 says:

Not sure that Hunter fits your theory, Callahan thought Hunter was the best athlete he ever coached and had no weaknesses. Hunter may be a character guy, too. But what got him the starting nod was Callahan’s seal of approval coming off of his generally good performances filling in for Woody in 2010.

          • avatar Lam Jones says:

my all time favorite Jet nickname!

      • avatar Bent says:

I wonder if they hoped this would help with team unity and perhaps it ultimately contributed negatively to team unity?

      • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

BB wasted alot of draft pics.

Mayo and the two tight ends. Only good ones since Brady.

  9. avatar Tk says:

Scotty McKnight pick was pretty stupid.

  10. avatar Johnny (no so much for a month) Reefer says:

    money money moneyyyy

  11. avatar Matt3222 says:

too bad we couldn’t get Carrier to dress up and play Safety!

  12. avatar frankc says:

the Scotty Mcknight pick was a head scratcher. it’s like an UDFA type pick but I guess it was to keep the QB happy ?? I’d have taken some special teams guy bc you won’t get too much from that round but you never know. I’ve criticized Mr. T on here and many defend him and while this pick is a small thing-WHY? kind of like the times I’ve gone on about all the running backs we’ve taken etc. in the drafts. Again, this off season will be big bc it will either shut me up or the rest of the pro Tanny conspirators on this site joking! Seriously, it’s going to be a big one as I don’t think you can deny it. If this team has a 6-10 or even 8-8 year someone’s in trouble with the green tied wonder (Woody) and my guess is it’s Mr. T. Personally, I’d just move him back to capologist which is what he’s great at.

    • avatar Brendan says:

I don’t think a 7th rounder can really hurt a team, because you’re basically hoping for lightning in a bottle with that late pick. You sometimes get Tom Bray, but 99% of the time you end up with Scotty McKnight (if that makes sense).

    • avatar Bent says:

If it wasn’t for the lockout, I’m sure he’d have been a UDFA. That enabled them to sign him and for him to start borrowing Sanchez’s playbook right away (which I don’t think they’d have allowed if they didn’t have his rights), instead of having to wait until after the lockout.

Since they didn’t know how many of the 2010 receivers were returning, it wasn’t a bad idea to get one guy he should have had some chemistry with locked up. It didn’t work out (and made little sense ultimately because he only worked with Brunell and McElroy), but it only cost them a 7th round pick, not even a roster spot or a minimum salary.

    • avatar Johnny (no so much for a month) Reefer says:

7th round pick for somebody who prolly has the best chemistry with your QB?

Worth the risk. Not like he didn’t have decent numbers in college.

  13. avatar frankc says:

that’s fair. I may attend the draft this year so maybe I’ll treat you guys to my thoughts as it’s happening this way you can really have a few laughs at my analysis! Joking aside, what scares me about the Jets current position is even with adding a pass rusher, Brady still gets rid of the ball quickly with those dinks and dunks so we’ll have to get some safeties or cover LBS for the TEs. As much as I’ve talked up JErry Reese and the Giants pass rush, they didn’t really stop Brady as much as the Pats stopped themselves on a number of drives. I’m not sure how many safeties or “cover” backers (I’m making that term up but you know what I mean)are out there.

    • avatar Johnny (no so much for a month) Reefer says:

this has been sorta my point.

BTW GONK was the pats entire O last year. Him being hurt had A LOT to do with the GMENS superbowl victory.

We need a cover safety more then a pass rusher. While a pass rusher would be amazing(not saying it wont). It’s hard to find a really great one and they are very hit and miss.

Oline, Safety, then try for a pass rusher.

  14. avatar Bob Kole says:

Jets confirm hiring of Dunbar.. THEY KEPT OLD QB COACH!!!! What are they thinking?

Anyone please try to explain this to me.

  15. avatar Ron "DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS" says:

Explanation for Cavanaugh: either Rex and Spags could’nt agree on a coordinator, or they think in some way it helps Sanchez, I was hoping for someone new, only time will tell.

  16. avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

    peyton is just that GOOD.

He didn’t even need a HC.

  17. avatar Massive says:

I guess they had to keep some continuity in the coaching staff on offense. In a make or break year, it’s probably best that Sanchez is familiar with one of those guys.

    • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

maybe they think like i do, and it was the system and play calling that faulted Sanchez’s game, and the QB coach has been doing fine, working on mechanics and things of that nature.

      • avatar Bent says:

FWIW Sanchez said the red zone improvement was all down to Cavanaugh

      • avatar Brendan says:

Anyone remember reading an article that gave the credit red-zone improvement to Cavanaugh? I thought I remember seeing that somewhere. If that’s actually the case, maybe he doesn’t suck as much as I (we) think.

    • avatar jsa says:

Agree, less than a complete overhaul can be helpful.

And the truth is, no one who is not with the team at practive and meetings can claim to have much of any idea of how the positional coaches are doing. Sure, we can look at Sanchez and see he’s not playing well and assume Cavanaugh did a bad job, but we really just don’t know.

Similarly, we can look at the DL play of the past two years, see it was good and assume Carrier did a good job, but we don’t know.

I think if Carrier has done a good job, he could have defensive coordinator potential. Former Pro Bowl Safety, now has coaching experience at both DB and DL. But as I state above, this is all speculation.

  18. avatar reality jet fan says:

When they hired sparano many of you said they had to get someone for the passing part of the offense. Well that didnt happen. Now what

    • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

As fans we back our team until proven otherwise.

    • avatar Brendan says:

Just because people said something doesn’t mean it’s true. Sparano called plays under Parcells, that’s enough for me.

      • avatar reality jet fan says:

Did you think a coach should be brought in for the passing?

        • avatar Brendan says:

When it was Haley, I would have liked it because Sparano worked with him before. But I don’t think he needs a “passing game coordinator” if that’s what you mean.

        • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

          Nope.

I wont complain if we do, but I’m not worried about it.

        • avatar joeyboy79 says:

Reality,I think thats an overkill. We will be a primarily run team with well timed passes and some downfield shots to keep the DS honest. Sparano has been around football most of his adult life and was HC. He can handle the total offense and it would cause less confusion and static. he will do fine.

  19. avatar joeyboy79 says:

Its funny, I didnt here Cavanaughs name hardly at all during the redzone improvement this past season as the name Moore was brought up over and over. I am not saying it wsnt Cavanughh who had a part in it, just that I kept hearing and many times, that it was Moore.

    • avatar Bent says:

Yes, remember when Moore got a more full time role at the end of the year and the Jets beat the Skins and Chiefs and everyone said it had galvanized the offense? Actually, I think it backfired. The yardage in those two wins was below par even though they scored 71 points and obviously they lost their last three with the offense struggling. I’m not saying Moore did a bad job, but certainly his increased involvement didn’t help matters. Too many cooks?

Sanchez definitely told CBS that Cavanaugh was the guy he credits, but I’m sure Moore helped out too.

    • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

      again, your READING things.

DOES NOT MEAN IT IS TRUE!

don’t believe everything you read on the interwebs guys.

I can easily write a story about how my positive vibes is the single reason we made the playoffs the 2 years before this.

Does it make it true? No? Is it possible? Most likely not. B

ut if i write it, i grantee some gullible reader will believe it.

  20. avatar reality jet fan says:

So now that haley is not a choice sparano is fine. Hysterical

    • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

have i ever said anything you mentioning?

      • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

please, just because somebody said something, DOESN’T mean it was MY belief.

I have my own, and i don’t stray or let GGN articles dictate my opinions.

    • avatar Brendan says:

You really don’t even try to understand the flip side of your views, do you?

Haley is the only person I would want in that role because it’s worked before. Is that unclear? I don’t think handcuffing Sparano with a “passing game coordinator” is going to work, it’d lead to jurisdiction issues over the offense. Haley and Sparano did this once before, so I trust they could do it again.

  21. avatar reality jet fan says:

And now cavanaugh is fine also?

    • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

      have i ever ripped cavanaugh?

      • avatar Johnny (not so much for a month) Reefer says:

i don’t think i’ve even ONCE mentioned his name until today.

SO please, don’t reply to me in a sarcastic sense because your a little girl.

I wasnt even speaking to you at all.But i am very impressed with your insult i cant imagine the effort that went into little girl wow

tons of effort!! the hole 2 seconds it took to type. I was going for the ‘sandlot’ insult.

Well I replied and you went on with this, so how was it not dictated to me?

  22. avatar Ron "DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS" says:

I’m wondering if Moore will be used at all this season.

  23. avatar reality jet fan says:

There are opinions i respect on here example bent joeyboy brendan and i was just throwing that out there about sparano needing help
