Quotes: Mo Better?

by Bent on February 17th, 2012 at 1:48 pm

I’m sure others had high expectations of me because I was the first pick, but I’m not going to let other people dictate how I play … This offseason I’m going to mature my body, I’m going to correct any mistakes I had last year, and I’m going to be ready to go.

- Muhammed Wilkerson, speaking yesterday at the WrestleMania XXIX news conference.

Wilkerson said himself that he played “fairly well” but has “room for improvement”. The rookie led the Jets in tackles for a loss with nine and added three sacks.

What are your expectations for Wilkerson as he embarks upon his second season in the league?

To rival Richard Seymour as the best 3-4 DE to ever play the game.

  2. avatar Wolf says:

The kid has the ability to be as good as Seymour.

He impressed me last year, and he will only improve going forward.

  3. avatar Marcus says:

Seems polished and professional. I was pleasantly surprised with his performance this season, given the lack of offseason preparation he was able to get with the coaching staff.

  4. avatar Wolf says:

Oh, and I expect him to improve his interior pass rushing capabilities.

  5. avatar spent says:

This guy is only going to get better. Each of his four seasons in college, his tackles and sacks went up, up, up. A full offseason of working out, learning more about the system, and maturing will do this guy wonders. Hey, the Patriots considered drafting him last year, so you know he’s got to be quality.

    • avatar Wolf says:

Eh, Pats have had some terrible drafts recently. That is no way to evaluate it.

      • avatar spent says:

        Dude, they drafted Brady.

        • avatar Marcus says:

          And /recently/ they’ve drafted:

          First round
Colorado OT Nate Solder, (2011, from OAK)
Rutgers CB Devin McCourty (2010, from DAL)
Tennessee OLB Jerod Mayo (2008, from N.O.)
Miami DB Brandon Meriweather (2007, from SEA)

          Second Round
Virginia CB Ras-I Dowling (2011, from CAR)
California RB Shane Vereen (2011, from N.O.)
Arizona TE Rob Gronkowski (2010, from CHI/TB/OAK)
          Florida OLB Jermaine Cunningham (2010)
Florida ILB Brandon Spikes (2010, from MIN/HOU)
Oregon SS Patrick Chung (2009, from KC)
Boston College DT Ron Brace (2009, from OAK)
Connecticut CB Darius Butler (2009, from GB)
          Houston OL Sebastian Vollmer (2009)
          Colorado CB Terrence Wheatley (2008)

          Third round
LSU RB Stevan Ridley (2011, from HOU)
Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett (2011, from MIN)
Ohio WR Taylor Price (2010, from DAL)
North Carolina WR Brandon Tate (2009, from NYJ/GB)
South Florida OLB Tyrone McKenzie (2009, from NFL)
Michigan OLB Shawn Crable (2008, from N.O.)
San Diego State QB Kevin O’Connell (2008)

This is not a star-studded group.

I see good things from him. He has some room for improvement which is expected at this stage of the game, but played very solid for his first year. I dont think he will be exceptional but he will be a solid force on the line for years to come.

    • avatar SackDance99 says:

I guess informing you that Wilkerson actually had a better rookie season than Seymour did wouldn’t revise your ceiling as to his abilities? Oh, and Seymour came out of Georgia in the SEC, not Temple.

      • avatar joeyboy79 says:

Easy sack man, I see a bright future for him. I just dont see a monster but I do see a solid force for many years, just my opinion. If you cant see that there is room for improvement ,no problem. The opposing offense was targeting him during the year and our run D did decline due to him being a rookie and a couple of vets not leaving or out for season due to injuury, but over all I was impressed and happy with his performance, but I dont see a monster just yet, but you never know, can you dig it!

        • avatar joeyboy79 says:

          meant vets leaving

        • avatar SackDance99 says:

Sure, there’s room for improvement, but unlike you, I’m judging him as a rookie from an inferior college football program. And, he wasn’t targeted and the decline of the run D wasn’t attributable to Mo, it was the loss of BT. In fact, the decline of the run D was really just the result of 1 awful game against Oakland, where Westerman made every containment error in the book. The rest of the perceived decline was when teams like the Pats started to run on the Jets pass package. Again, not Mo’s fault. And, don’t forget DeVito’s injuries, which also weakened the run D. I just like giving you grief because I find your analysis flawed and I like to point the flaws out.

        • avatar Marcus says:

They may have been targeting him, but the run defense decline was not the fault of him or the D-Line in general…

          • avatar SackDance99 says:

And, the Oakland game had an outsized negative effect on their overall stats. The Raiders had 32 carries for 234 yards and 4 TDs. Net that game out and the Jets defense easily goes into the top 10 and on a per carry basis, top 3. It was a weird year for the Jets D, which generally was still very good, but there were way too many lapses, most of which were technique driven, like not setting the edge, poor pursuit angles and poor tackling form. Anyone think that the NFL’s curtailing of “live” practices with pads hurt the Jets and defenses, generally?

            • avatar Marcus says:

Games like that are why FO stats are really helpful in this regard… The D-line isn’t attributed any fault beyond 10 yards, so the craziness going on in the Oakland game is (correctly) given to the Safeties and defense as a whole rather than the line.

            • avatar joeyboy79 says:

He will keep improving as he learns the game. I agree that he was overmatched at times but as a rook in his first season that is to be expected. As the article states, there is much room for improvement. I think he will be rock solid but not a monster. http://turnonthejets.com/tag/muhammad-wilkerson/

Bent, why is my 2:47 and 252pm comments awaiting moderation, it is perfectly clean and just shows a link on Wilkersons performance????????????????

                  • avatar TheSsefLord says:

We are going to have a sick defensive line in a couple of year. Mo is going to be our version of Ngata, Ellis could be the next Kris Jenkins if he tried. Our other guys aren’t that old either and play very well.

      • avatar Mike Battle says:

And had the benefit of OTA’s and a full training camp. This kid has a work ethic, physical skills and will be the Jets DE for the next 10 Yrs.

  7. avatar Bigfinkin says:

Good to know he sets the bar high for himself. I hope we get even better production from him next year.

  8. avatar pete says:

I won’t be liked but let pouha go if he’s trying to cash in. Ellis wilk devito would be good. If they can draft two olbs slash d ends we would be set. Maybe a devin still in the second round. We need to get younger and hungry

  9. avatar juunit says:

    Mo Wilkinson, Mo problems.

  10. avatar juunit says:

    Mo Wilkerson, Mo problems.

  11. avatar rusty sanchez says:

i think he played pretty good for not having a full offseason with the team and plus he came from temple which is still div 1 but in a weaker conference with weaker competition lets hope we resign a heavier maybin and strike gold in the draft and the skies the limit for this kid

  12. avatar JEFFDOLFINI says:

6 sacks 10 tackles for a loss next year. I see him being a pro bowler by year 4.

  13. avatar RDubbs says:

I’m expecting a Shaun Ellis type of career out of Wilkerson, which is another way of saying that I’m expecting a lot.

  14. avatar pete says:

Idk its a deep dt draft. Five good guys. Maybin wilk Ellis pouha still and curry would be great. We need to draft two guys eArly. But t rich should be a top target

  15. avatar Posing Steven Colbert says:

I’m just not calling him a bust, yet.

  16. avatar SackDance99 says:

Wilkerson played much better than I thought he would given his pedigree. He still can play a little too upright at times, but with a full off-season of NFL strength training and positional coaching? Watch out. He may not be a Pro Bowler next season or All-Pro by his 3rd season, like Seymour (who was 2″ taller), but he’s a real good player, with as of now an unlimited ceiling.

  17. avatar long/time/1st/time says:

I hope he can keep it up. I’m not a big devito fan (I think his good but I just think his missing something) if Dixon play better and start over Devito I’ll be happy IMO his a better pass rusher. If we get better play out of the OLB divito will do but without every down pass rushing OLB we can’t have Divito out there very down. In a year or two Ellis will take over for poha. By the way this better then talking team unity, Payton and bashing Rex. Can we have more on FA and the draft?

    • avatar SackDance99 says:

DeVito is very good against the run and is mostly what you want from a strongside 3-4 DE. I agree that he’s not a good pass rusher (S. Ellis was a very good pass rusher and good overall DE). So, on balance DeVito does his job, but he has to be replaced on passing downs.

  18. avatar pete says:

bent what do you think we be the better draft… getting t rich and a olb in the second and third or drafting two olb in rounds one and two? i think its getting t rich

    • avatar Bent says:

I’ll always vote defense/OL in a situation like this.

    • avatar joeyboy79 says:

I would go offense first being that it was worse than the D with too many 3 and outs and our qb was beaten to a pulp behind that line. It wont matter who is on D if the offense cant give them a rest. The D also has some holes but in my view, upgrading the offense is for survival while upgrades to the D is the difference from good to very good. I have to go with the weaker link first but both need work.

  19. avatar pete says:

    would be?

  20. avatar mataos says: January 18, 2012 at 7:10 pm "I don't buy it" says:

    Expectations:
    Tackles-52 TFL-14 Sacks-8 FF-2
But aside from stats, expect big things from Big Mo.

  21. avatar tom says:

Wills had a pretty good season nothing spectacular but. I think the hiring of Dunbar as the d-line coach should improve Wills play even more. I hope we can find a safety & some pass rushers in free agency or the draft. Mario Williams would look great in green & white

  22. avatar a57se says:

Akiem Hicks would be a nice late round pick. Kris Jenkins material but needs a lot of work.
Even though he has the size for NT, Ellis might be better as a DE for the Jets, he has excellent agility for his size and even in the few chances he got this year he showed the potential to disrupt.
I could see Ellis replacing DeVito in a another year, keep sione for 2, that gives you time to get Hicks up to speed….

  23. avatar Phil says:

He’s not a big time player. This was not John Abraham. I’m thinking more of a Shawn Ellis. A solid starter for years, but not a pro bowl caliber guy.
