justifying the JETS keeping Eric Smith is harder to do than justifying the continent of Europe should stick with their economic model.

Kewpie for Toon2388 for being correct and clever in a single sentence post. Brilliant.
The author of this article is ill informed and silly.
“A player like Mark Barron from Alabama or other top prospects at safety will be picked by the team.” However, Barron, the top rated college safety has detractors who question his pass defending deep. Also, he is injured and will not perform at the combine (i.e., no way to see how tight his hips are) and may not practice till August. The team that drafts him may lose his first year, especially one playing a defense with hard to learn coverages. Plus there is not another top rated safety on the board.
Secondly, the author himself admits, “Eric Smith is not a starting NFL safety over the rigors of a sixteen game schedule”. Why pay a guy to not play a position of need. None of our safeties, including Leonhard had a good season last year. We were victimized all year over the middle.
I would question paying Smith the league minimum in spite of his special team skills.
We need a GM who can upgrade RT and both safety positions. Those would be the most important upgrades this team could make.
Unfortunately, the recent overpaying of Wayne Hunter (like anyone would sign him as a FA after we cut him) and the likely overpaying of Eric Smith on a cap constrained team indicate neither is likely.

“We need a GM” is right on target, Harlan. Tanny has made some excellent moves to target and get some top-quality starters at various positions thru trades, FA & the draft. But depth across the roster has plagued him for years. He just can’t find any. We decried the DL depth for years. We now see the horrors of any one of our OL getting hurt. We almost can’t field a team at safety. Not only do we not have a burner at WR, even if we get one, what happens if he or Holmes goes down (or pouts)? Re-signing Rob Turner should be a huge priority. Who else plays center if Mangold ever gets hurt again? His loss ripped the guts out of our season. Also, who gets pushed for a job here? Who has to compete for a starting job here? There is a huge, destructive gap between starters and scrubs on the Jets. The fall-off from the 1′s to the 2′s is nearly obscene.
Tanny needs to earn his stripes this year. There’s no lockout weirdness to blame or hold him up. He needs to not only fill the starter holes across the lineups, but bring in QUALITY backups to hold the fort while starters heal and actually push the guys in front of them for those starting jobs. Tanny’s on the clock…

I dont mind them keeping Smith, he shouldnt start though. He knows the system and hes a good tackler. Hopefully they get a safety in FA to start and draft one at some point. I assume Rexs D is difficult to learn by the blown coverages and because it took Poole so long to get it down. So you cant just throw anybody in there and expect immediate results.

Harlan – we need an Owner GM and Coach that will stick with a long-term plan, could care less what the media thinks, and make decisions consistent with the philosophy/ideology. Why trade a 1 and 2 to draft a QB when you are going to play ground and pound and have a top 5 D?
Why talk about “next man up” and then basically make excuses for 2 losses because the Center was hurt?
I like this regime better than anything since the Walt Michaels era……we need 2012 to be a good year so this regime stays intact

can’t get rid of smith. fans will need someone to take the fall if they do not win games next year, who would the scapegoat be if he was gone?
-
Wayne Hunter. Probably Tony S.
-
The scapegoats are used up. Now,it falls on QB,HC,GM. Scapegoats at lower levels lose their sting after they were already used in an underperforming year like last season. Now Woody will go after bigger game if we ploch again.

I hate to admit it, But the article on Eric Smith I agree with. We have no one to replace him and a rookie cant be trusted to come right in and start. Smith knows the system, has played in playoff games and if cheap, who woulldnt pay a player only a couple on hundred thousand for a solid back up,situational role and he also plays ST. He can also help the rooks adapt as he knows the system. This is not pretty but the best way.

My new must-to-replace is Slauson. Besides the fact that he is built to be a career backup–not a starter, his lessened play this year was a problem, perhaps leading to Brick’s poor year.
But having a ripped-up shoulder and NOT TELLING ANYONE? That’s just bush, and a slap at his teammates. What was he? 60%? 70%? How dare he put their group OL ability in jeopardy like that?
It was either incredibly selfish or incredibly stupid. You HAVE to know when to tell your staff that you’re hurt. False bravado helps absolutely no one.
Now that his mentor/protector Callahan is gone, it’s time to find a quality starting guard — either a FA or through the draft.

Awesome post, but unfortunately this team is running on smoke and mirrors and thats why we are in the shape we are in! There are a million excuses but too few solutions. If thats what the fans want then thats what they will get!

bring Eric Smith back! Seriously -we need him to play specials and be a 3rd or 4th safety. You can blame the front office and Rex for making this guy a starter. he’s not a cover safety but can play the run and that’s about it. Kind of like Bart Scott -that’s for the Bart Scott lovers on here :) hey I stick by what I say and don’t mind if you disagree.

Am I the only that likes Reggie Nelson? Maybe someone who has seen him play a lot in JAC can tell me if he’s worth the Jets’ investment.
But coming out of Florida, he was a prototypical centerfielder/ballhawk FS with good speed. Isn’t that exactly what we need?
