Buzz: Maybin to Get ORIGINAL Round Tender
(Note: I re-wrote the original post because Manish updated his story).

Earlier today, sources told Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News that the Jets are going to give restricted free agent Aaron Maybin a first round tender. However, it has subsequently emerged that they can give him the original round tender and still obtain first round compensation in the event another team signs him to an offer sheet that they opt not to match.
The projected tender amount is currently in the range of $1.3m, less than half the amount Manish originally reported. Maybin will be under contract for that amount for the 2012 season…unless:
(a) They rescind the tender, or don’t offer it to him after all
(b) He signs an offer sheet with another team
(c) The Jets separately negotiate a longer term deal with him
(d) The Jets trade him for less than a first rounder
In the case of (b) the Jets will have the option to match the offer and sign him to an equivalent long term deal. If they elect not to, they will receive a first round pick.
In the case of (c) it would have to be a deal that guaranteed him more than the $1.3m he would be set to receive this year, but could potentially be structured in such a way that the current year cap hit was lower.
There is a little-known rule whereby any player drafted in the first or second round that gets an original round tender sees the compensation attached drop by one round. This happened with Kellen Clemens in 2010 (he was drafted in the second round, but his “original round” compensation was dropped to a third rounder). However, I have determined that this rule only applies if there’s an undrafted player or a player drafted later on that got a higher tender. Therefore, this means the Jets will not be able to tender Jamaal Westerman or Marquice Cole at a second round level, otherwise Maybin’s compensation would drop by a round. I’d suggest that was pretty unlikely anyway.
I was initially surprised when it was announced he’d get the higher tender, reasoning that the Jets must be higher on him than expected. Now this has been cleared up, it makes a lot more sense and is nothing more than the no-brainer move we were predicting all along, with the added bonus that the draft pick compensation is still a first rounder.

Any chance the colts interested in maybin??
-
I like maybin but i don’t think anyone would pick him up because he didn’t really show anything. He got sacks in the beginning because they weren’t expecting him to be fast. He is alright but i don’t see anyone who would trade a 1st rounder for that guy. But i hope this guy does become a beast. (Only with us though)
-
i kind of feel like we’re playing with house money here. no real risk and the potential reward is exciting.
-
I guess thats a good way of looking at it. As long as we dont lose focus on the big picture.
-
Not sure what that meant. Seems that tendering him is the only logical thing to do. How does tendering Maybin result in losing focus on the big picture, which as a Jets fan I assume we all want, which is just improving the team.
-
What I meant is that he has shown that he is not the true answer to our needs in the pass rush dept. He has just excelled in coverage sacks which many can do at even less money. When teams caught on to him he did NOTHING the last 4 games and just was swatted away! I just think this is still alot of money to throw around when our cap is so tight. It is not the worst situation as long as it doesnt stop our quest on a real bonifide everydown pass rusher.
-
It’s $1.3M. That’s not a lot at all. If there are others that could get those coverage sacks for less money they sure as heck weren’t on our roster last year.
I have no idea how much Maybin can improve. I’m not counting on him becoming an every down player or the answer in the passrush department, but you never know what might happen with a full offseason of coaching up.
-
Realistic and solid post.
-
-
I agree that Maybin isn’t ‘The Answer” for our pass rush issues, at least not right now, but it’s just a $1.3 mil tender. Tanny and Rex didn’t show up at his door at midnight to give him a 6 year deal. If anything this is as standard as standard moves get.
Also just food for thought I, along with I’m sure many other people on this blog realize that Maybin has demonstrated a complete lack of a pass rush moves repertoire. However, I believe I read in the article on Coach Smith (LB coach) that he told Maybin this season to not worry about moves and just concentrate on his speed rush. Perhaps with a full offseason program and training camp he can focus on his pass rush moves.

Agreed, Maybin’s house money, as was a First Round Pick and Buffalo paid the tab.
That said, he delivered some dividends last year, and represents a whole lot of potential. Not enough for an original first round tender though. He’s got hit the weight room and learn how to be an every down player.
-
-
For that money…Welcome back MAYHEM!!! Get it in 2013!
-
Yea I would like as many pass rushers as we can get so if we can afford Maybin along with 1 or 2 guys from the draft.
-
Hey look, it’s my avatar.
-
I really hope Maybin can have a breakout season and play his way into the starting defense. I’m holding out hope that he can be an every down pass rusher.
-
You guys are delusional with Maybin. He runs as fast as he can around the tackle to try to get the quarterback. Unfortunately for him, tackles in the NFL block well, thus he’s running ten yards up field. He’s a terrible player, dropped by a terrible team. Why are we so excited because he got a few sacks? He has one move, and it isn’t going to help us win games.
A bad player, showing how bad our line is. We have NOTHING going for us for a pass rush. NOTHING.
Maybe Rex and Tannenbaum could address this in the offseason or just keep pretending we can win minus any semblance of qb pressure. We have the best cb random in the league and yet we can’t get it done. No pass rush.
Stop pretending Maybin can help. He stinks, and always will.
-
u just a hater Gordon
-
You have to give the guy a full offseason before you can even begin to offer judgement on him.
And for what it’s worth, pass rush has little to do with the defensive line in the 3-4 defense. We have one of the best defensive lines in football.
-
I understand how you feel although I like Mayben as a situational guy. youre right! They need to address the pass rush this season. Upshaw or Ingrim along with 1 more guy in later rounds.
-
“Stop pretending Maybin can help. He stinks, and always will.”
Except he did help the team already. He didn’t stink this past year, either.
-
-
Tannenbaum said embattled S Eric Smith will “certainly be back.” As Ryan noted, Smith and Tracy Wilson are the only safeties under contract. Ryan said Smith played with a knee injury for a “majority of the season” (he had a scope after the season) and still considers him a starter. It looks like they will add at least two safeties, one via free agency and another in the draft.
Seriously?im done with these 2 stooges,smh-
So you expect them to add three safeties this offseason? I don’t know what point you’re trying to make.
-
If Smith is back they have to at least let him compete for playing time at safety… Rex months before the season, and before they even get anyone else, can’t just say “He won’t start, no matter how much better he gets or how bad the new guys we get are.”
-
-
-
a faster hungrier d next year. it all starts up front. have six to seven guys next year. maybin wilk ellis devito (pouha gets big deal elsewhere) dixon, 2 pass rushers… harris mauga/scott pace thomas/draft pick.. thats a solid front 7.
-
Another reason why the fans need to tone it down a notch and let Mr. T do what he does best; handle the financial aspects of our organization.
When I read the original post, I thought to myself “how would that even make sense?”
It’s great to know it didn’t and that our General Manager knows about all those little details these cheatbeat writers seem to overlook.
-
I’ll take the #1draft pick.
-
please
-
-
eric smith better not end up starting on this defense. That would piss me the F off. What a scrub
-
I think now that maybin knows he will be given the chance to be an impact player for the jets I expect him to have a great offseason and come back in phenomenal shape. He’s still only 23 and if he can add another 15 to 20 lbs I think hell be able to handle blockers better than he did last year. Mayhem!!!
-
Wouldnt it have been better to put a second rd tender on him? That way someone may actually be willing to take him. I would take a second rd pick for him. I like him but he is a one trick pony. They could get an all around guy in the second or a safety whatever depending how the draft plays out. But nobody is giving up a first for him. Hard to believe Rex and co. are that impressed with Maybin.
-
very glad to here this, i have not had a chance to wear my “mayhem” jersey to a game yet!
-
I think it’s funny that folks look at Maybin, the Jets’ most dynamic pass rusher, and then say he’s a one trick pony who hit his ceiling. That’s just ridiculous. Right now, he’s 23 and will be 24 by the start of the season. Last off season was the lockout and he was ill, so he lost weight. He had very little training camp time with the Jets and then was signed during the season. With such little practice or knowledge of the playbook, combined with a lack of conditioning, he was solely asked to edge rush. And, he has a lightning quick first step and tackles with violence. I see him and I see a ton of potential. A 24 year old who finally joins a great defensive staff with his innate skills? Tendering him at the original tender for only $1.3 million is a bargain. He has the most potential of any Jets defensive player, I’m surprised at the negativity surrounding him. He’s part of the solution, not a problem. Oh, and the Bills have a track record for giving up too soon on defensive talent. Donte Whitner went from enigma to stud on the 49ers. Funny, if Maybin redshirted and came out as a senior, he might be at the combine now and all the haters who want a 1st round pass rusher would be clamoring for the Jets to draft him. He’d blow away the current crop of WILL/DE candidates.
-
When I thought it was for almost 3m, I was against it. Now with 1.3, much better. He has some proving to do if he can expand his role but as of now, he is a one trick pony, who got coverage sacks and the last four games did nothing when they figured him out. He basically would run past the qb and back to him when the qb held the ball for 5-7 seconds. I am not saying he cant be more, but we have to see at this point. For the money, it is a good risk.
-
As long as we still focus on obtaining a everydown pass rusher and he is only getting the 1.3M it is a good situation to be in, but I dont want to rely on that he will be the total package and lose out on a solid pass rusher for another season. Yes he shows potential, but it is still an unknown if he can up his role from a situation player. We need an olb who can rush, play every down, hold up against the run and cover. Lets get it done and if Mayem surprises, we are in business with the two !
-
Again, with due respect, your analysis is flawed. First, he didn’t just get coverage sacks and, yes, offenses did figure him out by adjusting to him. Blame Rex and Pettine for not playing off of his edge rush better. Second, Maybin is himself a prospect. So, explain the wisdom of drafting a 1st rounder that does what Maybin does? Courtney Upshaw, for instance, is 2″ shorter than Maybin and only 1 year younger. Who is the better prospect? The guy who showed dynamic pass rush ability as a pro or a guy who was a good player on a great college defense? The point is that Maybin didn’t show near what he could potentially do as a Jet. Plus, you simply gloss over that he wasn’t in Jets training camp from the beginning, was coming off an illness, likely suffered from the lockout and came off of his couch to become the Jets best pass rusher. Imagine what he can do with a full off season program, added bulk and a full training camp? David DeCastro reportedly had a great pro day. I’d rather draft him than a prospect that would sit behind Maybin.
-
Ok, no problem my analysis is flawed if you say so,lol, but I still want an everydown pass rusher, as maybin has only been proven to be situational up to this point and even suspect with that, the last 4 games!
-
All your excuses would be moot with an every down pass rusher that is the full package. Excuses wont matter, when we come up against high powered offenses and qbs. We need to grab a solid versatile olb. If you want to gamble on Maybin its your opinion but the jets are even reluctant by the only 1.3 m offered and no future guarentees which is smart. I am sure they will go after a bonifide pass rusher as it is a big need.
-
I’m not making excuses for the kid, I’m putting his production in context. He hadn’t recorded an NFL sack until he was a Jet and he wasn’t signed until a month after training camp ended. I view him like a rookie. For a rookie, his production would have everyone gushing and predicting a HOF career. But, you’re relegating a 23 year old, who has barely played the last 2 seasons, to an NFL career as a situational pass rusher only. Sorry, but that doesn’t make any sense to me. Let’s see what he can do this season before we start to project what the kid’s career will be like. Oh, and if we’re judging 23 year olds just on their last 4 games, then I guess Sanchez should be toast. And, even with his sackless last 4 games, he still led the NFL in pressures and sacks per play. Like I said, you’re analysis is flawed.
-
My analysis says, he hasnt proven anything more than that he is just a situational player, that is the fact up to this point, how is that flawed? it is fact. I never said there is no chance that he cant develop , but we need to keep our options open and get that everydown pass rusher which is greatly needed with todays high powered offenses. Thats not flawed but reality.
-
You cant compare the qb positiuon to maybins one an only job function. He comes in for one situation only and also with the help of brining the house. His last 4 games when teams figured him out in his only one function, he was rendered ineffective. That is not a good sign. He is not effective against the run,and has trouble changing direction for coverage purposes. He might develop but as of now he is just a one trick pony.
-
He had less than a full season as a Jet and he wasn’t in condition to be an every down player. Those are facts, too. He has proven that he can be a very good situational pass rusher, but it’s unknown as to whether he can do more. You are saying that he can’t be an every down pass rusher, whatever that means, while I’m saying that it’s too early to say that he can’t be the WILL/DE hybrid that the Jets defense needs. Usually, pass rushers are spoon fed as situational guys before becoming every down players. Maybin is, iMO, just going thru his rookie phase with the Jets. A young player with Maybin’s pass rushing ability is what teams need against high powered offenses.
-
Still the bottom line is he hasnt shown anything else but his limited role. Again, not saying he cant but until we have more to go on we have to forge forward! Lets get that EVERYDOWN pass rusher and we rock! IF maybin developes, we are in even better shape, but again, it is a question mark now with him.
-
We dont see him in those other roles, b/c he is just a one trick pony for at least and just hopefully for now.
-
-
-
And, the Jets are being smart tendering Maybin at $1.3 million. It gives them flexibility and it keeps the pressure on the kid. Also, last time I heard folks on this blog talking about drafting a “bona fide” every down pass rusher in the 1st round, the Jets drafted Gholston. Maybin has shown that in the Jets D he can rush the QB. No rookie can be termed “bona fide” until the rookie does it on the field and the best prospects will go higher than 16. I’m all for adding speed and depth to the defense, but the best young pass rushing project might already be a Jet.
-
I agree it is a good move for the cheap money , I am just saying he is a question mark and only a one role player right now and we must address it as that and keep filling our holes. He hasnt shown anything more but hopefully he will with coaching and a solid offseason.
-
How could he show more in just 13 games as a Jet? You see limits and I see limitless potential and certainly enough potential to make drafting a WILL/DE in the first 3 rounds unnecessary. A SAM, a MIKE, a safety? Yes. Another situational edge rusher? No.
-
I am just saying the jury is out on him right now as he is just situational. He is not good against the run and has trouble changing direction for coverage. He is just a one line burst to the qb with D help and even then the last 4 games was not effective when teams figured him out. As of now he has a ways to go to see if he can be upgraded, but as of now, he is just a one role player. He has done nothing to warrant anything else. Not saying he cant but this is how it is now.
-
Maybin hardly played against the run, we certainly didn’t see him in coverage, and he was asked to edge rush. Even with that, he showed other moves, and he was far better his last 4 games than you portray. He had pressures and near misses. Also, he just didn’t have a ton of reps. All we know is that he’s the Jets best pass rusher and we don’t know what else he can do. A rookie would come to the Jets with even more question marks.
-
Please Sack you comment that a rookie would come with even more question marks is silly, lol . Lets then not draft anyone! You are just hoping for the best with maybin like we all are, but he has ways to go as he is strictly just a one act player in Rexs schemes and when teams honed in on him, he did stugotz!Lets hope he can develop but I am not banking on it.
-
C’mon joeyboy every rookie is a question mark, don’t be thick. Why draft a prospect where the Jets already have a prospect. The Jets would be way better with a bona fide QB, so should the Jets draft a 1st round QB? Of course not because there’s no guarantee that a rookie QB would be better than Sanchez. Don’t tell me you’re one of those people that think football is plug and play, so the Jets draft a 1st round WILL/DE and he’ll automatically be a quality starter. That’s just dumb.

I am sure most will agree that Maybin shows some promise but only with his limited role so far. It has to be seen if we can get more out of him and that for the 1.3 M ,it is worth trying. I also believe that most here will want to obtain a solid pass rusher this season and not just rely on if Maybin will develop.
-
I agree. With a real pass rushing threat it will only help Maybin
-
No we are cookin!
-
Ha, you guys are priceless, the guy leads the NFL in sacks and pressures per play, but he’s not a “real” pass rushing threat. He comes off of his couch, plays only 13 games and is the best pass rusher, but he’s not real. You guys are unreal!
-
-
-
Also, a ball control offense that can pound, will also keep the D fresh and sharp. That cant be understated. The offense was the weakest link last season. We have to start with the foundation.
In comparing the needs , the offense is first because with the D not being uprgaded, we are still at least a good defense, but if the offense /line is not stabalized, we are in shambles! Hopefully both will be addressed.
