Garcon Declined Average Seven Million per Year from Colts

by Bassett on February 28th, 2012 at 7:30 am

With the news last week that Pierre Garcon had turned down a five year offer from the Colts, Tony Pauline shared some details on what he’s heard the offer was for Garcon, apparently it was in the seven million (average per year) ballpark.

More on the report from Adam Schefter of ESPN.com that Indianapolis Colts receiver Pierre Garcon turned down a five year offer from the team.  Word tonight is the value of the contract hovered around the $35 million mark.

For Jets fans that might have wanted to go after Garcon, this nugget is going to make it a challenge for the Jets to compete for Garcon’s services if they were interested in him during free agency.  Seven million per year means one of two things: that Garcon is just looking to get the hell out of Indy no matter what they offered, or that’s the price floor of what Garcon will be expecting from any team contending for him including the Colts.

While the Jets have cleaned up some cap space, they’d have to find a way to make Garcon’s year one number sufficiently palatable to both sides.  The Jets are going to need to find money for Pouha, as well as any other players they are going to bring in this spring, so spending seven million per year on yet another receiver is going to be a hard sell.

    There goes that idea…

    Sorry, Sack.

If this report is to be believed. I wonder what Braylon wanted before he was forced to swallow a 1 year deal for $1.6 million. $7M per year for Garcon, given every other UFA WR available, is delusional. My guess is that he’ll sign a contract with a decent signing bonus and exorbitant salaries in the later years of the deal that will never be realized.

  2. avatar mike_francesser says:

    Sooo….I hear there’s a lot of WR depth in this year’s draft….

  3. avatar Daniel Krauss says:

Randy Moss in his prime ill take lol. In all seriousness though, I hope they draft Michael Floyd or Melvin Ingra
if Trent is taken. Does anyone else agree with me that they’d rather have Ingram over Upshaw.

    • avatar Brendan says:

I’d rather have Mercilus over both of them.

      • avatar spent says:

        Shaun Powell for the win.

      • avatar Daniel Krauss says:

        Hes my #5 option.
        My list goes:
        1. Trich
        2. Floyd
        3. Ingram
        4. Upshaw
        5. Mercilius
*wouldnt be upset with any of those picks.

        • avatar Brendan says:

I don’t really make lists, I just pick out one or two guys that I really like, and keep my fingers crossed. I really like Mercilus and I really like DeCastro. Those are my two hopefuls for the first round, and if the Jets can trade back a few spots and get Mercilus I’ll be ecstatic.

Rounds 3-4 is when I’d like to see them take a chance on one of the WRs in the draft class, or maybe in the 2nd if a highly touted prospect falls.

Mercilus, Iloka, WR, OG, Rex’s Pick, K, Who cares. This isn’t counting the compensatory picks the team is going to get.

You’re 100% right about having to “take a chance” at WR in the later rounds…Which is why they should draft WR in the first. The Jets will need a solid #2 right from the get go. There will be no FA WR the team can afford who will make a difference. Lots of directions to go BUT this defense isn’t going to fall off, they’ll only get better. The offense is a joke and they need more weapons.

            • avatar Brendan says:

A rookie WR isn’t going to be a solid #2, though. I have no faith in a rookie receiver coming in and giving the Jets a consistent presence opposite Holmes. I’d rather draft another position, sign a veteran WR for the #2 spot and groom a mid/late round project to take over that role with Kerley the long-term solution at the slot.

              • avatar mataos says: January 18, 2012 at 7:10 pm "I don't buy it" says:

Right. We both know where the other stands on this topic.

                • avatar Brendan says:

Hah, yes we do. But at least we agree a mid-round WR should be seriously considered with this deep WR class.

                  • avatar mataos says: January 18, 2012 at 7:10 pm "I don't buy it" says:

Most def. IMO the reason the Jets can pick OLB/DE in rounds 2&3&6 instead of round 1 is because of Rex and his staff. But if the Jets pick your boy Merciless in the first I won’t be eating sour grapes, I’ll be rooting him on like every other Jet.

                    • avatar Brendan says:

I threw a beer at my wall when they took Wilkshake last year. Now I want to carry his love child, so I know what you’re saying.

I fell in love with Big Mo instantly. His phone call vid looked like it was taking place in some underground bunker. I was at work and I remember saying out loud “Whoooo boy we got ourselves a big angry Muslim”.
No offense to any of you following Islam. Meant as a pure compliment, but may sound slightly racist.

  4. avatar Daniel Krauss says:

Jets said they won’t take a lineman in the early rds…

    • avatar Brendan says:

So now we’re listening to what the Jets say pre-draft? That could very easily have been a smokescreen. Or it could be legitimate and the team is intending people to see it as a smokescreen. Isn’t the draft fun!?

    • avatar Marcus says:

      Rumor said Tackle, not lineman.

  5. avatar F 16 says:

Braylon on the cheap is who we should get before NE does.

  6. avatar MS says:

I’d rather take Floyd at 16, more potential to be a big play WR. ANd if we take someone else at #16 then we get Toon in round 2. EIther of these options would be cheaper than getting Garcon for 7 million a year. Plus, there is a good chance Peyton made all those WR’s better than they really are.

  7. avatar RJ says:

What really scares me is how well Nick Perry tested at the combine. From watching tape on him, he doesn’t seem to be anything more than a workout warrior. But that is why the draft is such a crap shoot. The guy is 6’3 271 lbs. and ran a 4.64 40. Those number are very impressive, but I just don’t find his football skills to be worthy of the #16 pick. I would love Decastro or Mercilus.

  8. avatar levi says:

I was hoping for Garcon. I think he is asking to much, I seem to remember him dropping alot of passes.
Wasnt Braylon injured early last season? Why are there no updates on his recovery? He should be healed by now.

  9. avatar ramble914 says:

I hope we take Cordy Glenn at 16 (this is predicated on Upshaw and Ingram already taken). We darfted a QB #5 overall and gave him $50 million. How do we not provide him with the best possible OL we can? After QB, the next most important piece is OL, and as last year has shown us, a mediocre OL will not cut it.

Imagine having D’Brick and Glenn as our bookends with Mangold in Center! Add in Moore at RG and whoever wins the battle between Ducasse, Slauson, Turner or Hunter for LG, and we will steamroll our way into the playoffs!

    • avatar Brendan says:

Hah I love how a two-year starter who has played injured (not just hurt, but injured) two years running is having his job called out, again.

Hasn’t Slauson earned his starting spot after the way he’s gutted through two seasons where he was seriously hurt?

      • avatar mataos says: January 18, 2012 at 7:10 pm "I don't buy it" says:

I love how in that scenerio it would appear the Oline is gonna score 30+ a game. Sign me up!

        • avatar ramble914 says:

Where did I write we would score 30 pts a game? I said we would steamroll our way into the palyoffs, which would indicate we will run, therefore a lot of low scoring ball control games.

      • avatar SackDance99 says:

I like Slauson’s heart, but he isn’t that talented. I know that I’m in the definite minority here, but I think Hunter has more talent at RT than Slauson does at LG. I can live with him, but if Mangold had a stud to his left, the Jets would have the most dynamic interior rushing game in the NFL, by far.

      • avatar ramble914 says:

No he hasn’t! IMO, he is average at best. Let him compete for the spot with everyone else, and the best man wins.

      • avatar Wolf says:

        Absolutely.

  10. avatar njdpelc says:

This is football we’re talking about. Any contract number means nothing. Revis turned down a 140 mil contract… maybe it just wasn’t enough guaranteed money for him.

  11. avatar Revis Christ says:

    Trich, Ingram, Mercilus, Upshaw, Decastro.
I really like Ingram. The best thing is that ONE of these guys will be available when we pick. If we go OL, first round, you can go PR in the second. Im so tired of the Jets not picking an OLB. After the Vernon wiff they’re shook. Just hope they get it right!

  12. avatar JEFFDOLFINI says:

How do you all feel about signing Vernon Carey so that we do not need to focus on RT in the draft? Bassett, do you feel that he is a better RT than Hunter at this point in his career?

    • avatar Brendan says:

See, I think you still have to look to RT for the future, but if you sign Carey that gives you a year of Carey & Hunter as your vet RTs and it gives Sparano a year to evaluate Vlad. I’d be much more comfortable with Sparano making his decision on Vlad after 12 months, instead of 2.

    • avatar Bent says:

I don’t really think of Carey as an upgrade over Hunter talent-wise, but he may be more comfortable with Sparano’s scheme, so perhaps would be less error-prone. Might not be a bad pickup if he came cheap, because he can also back up on the inside, but I wouldn’t hand him the starting job on a plate.

    • avatar ramble914 says:

Carey is no better then Hunter.

  13. avatar MattNYC says:

I think this report could also mean two other potential things:
    1. Guaranteed Money wasn’t there, therefor overstating true contract value
    2. Garcon’s agent wanted it out there to jack up the price to other potential suitors.

    Thoughts?

  14. avatar rusty sanchez says:

Usually I would be against taking a wr in the 1st rd but after green and Jones good rookie seasons I wouldn’t mind

  15. avatar Lou says:

Maybe Garcon just doesn’t want to be on a team in total rebuild mode. New coaches, new rookie QB incoming, ect ect.

Not that I care about him going to the Jets. I don’t think the jets should be wasting any money on WR’s. They gotta start looking for diamonds in the rough, or home growing their own. We aren’t an all out passing team with a probowl QB. Time for a reality check – stop wasting money on big name WR’s.

Look at the Giants, a few years ago they had no WR’s, and all of a sudden the young guys they had emerged.

  16. avatar MetalVagabond says:

forget Garcon bring Braylon back, he has chemistry with Sanchez laready
