Buzz: Peyton Manning is NOT the answer for the Jets

by Angel Navedo on December 29th, 2011 at 8:41 am

That this headline was even necessary is truly disappointing. Gary Myers is trolling Jets fans with a Peyton Manning-to-the-Jets argument, like bloggers masquerading as NFL scouts do in the offseason, and we’re taking the bait.

Peyton Manning to the Jets is an awful idea, and no convoluted logic can convince otherwise. It’s an asinine suggestion bred from the same womb of insanity where Manning as a 2011 MVP candidate flourished. It’s lazy, irresponsible, and unrealistic. We detest this opinion.

The bottom line is that, even if the Jets find a miracle on Sunday and back their way into the playoffs, they are not winning the Super Bowl this season as Ryan has so often guaranteed.

They need to shake things up offensively, and bringing in Manning for a season or two would do much more toward getting them to a Super Bowl than firing offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer would.

Here is where Jets fans are supposed to believe that Peyton Manning, a renowned postseason choke artist, holds the other half to Rex Ryan’s Super Bowl heart pendant. (More on Schottenheimer later.)

… And the cost of the… JETS

by Angel Navedo on October 1st, 2011 at 6:13 pm

The Money Men at Mint.com crunched some NFL numbers and developed an infographic detailing the (astronomical) prices for supporting your team at a live game, and the New York Jets are at the very top of the pile.

Numbers were calculated for a family of four, including ticket prices, parking, food, and souvenirs, resulting in a $427.42 average across the league. The Jets, however, come in a little more than $200 above the league average, estimated at a whopping $629.90 for a three-hour game.

A three-hour game. That the team might lose, effectively spoiling your day before venturing into a gridlocked parking lot. And it might rain, ruining that $17 cap and $85 jersey you bought. Or someone might spill their beer on you while celebrating a touchdown, making you stink.

Now, you can invest in a new television without explaining yourself. Just print this out and rub it in the faces of all who question your motives.

Audible: Jason Hill Highlights

by Angel Navedo on September 17th, 2011 at 11:34 am

I wanted to do my blogger thing, albeit a day or so late, and put in some work researching Jaguars wide receiver Jason Hill after he called my home “overhyped.” I was finished pretty quickly. Good luck with that Pro Bowl, bro!

What are you guys up to today?

Audible: Your ‘I Suck at Madden’ Face?

by Angel Navedo on September 6th, 2011 at 11:46 pm

Do you play Madden NFL 12? Cool. Do you play online? Perfect!

Load up your copy of Madden NFL 12 on the PS3, go online, and join the TheJetsBlog community. (It’s not on the 360, because I don’t play Madden on it. If you’re interested in creating a TJB community for the 360, let me know and we’ll make it TJB official.)

This is especially cool for those of you who avoid the digital gridiron altogether because of unsavory characters on the web. Random matchmaking usually means you’ll end up playing against a jerk who blitzes every down, goes for it on fourth-and-long, and thinks two-point conversions are hilarious. Such is the peril of engaging strangers on the Internet. Let’s avoid that this season.

Buzz: The David Harris Ballpark

by Angel Navedo on July 28th, 2011 at 11:22 pm

There is now a barometer to gauge the going rates for premier inside linebackers in 2011. Carolina signed Jon Beason—a three-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro inside linebacker—to a monster five-year, $50M extension with $25M guaranteed.

Although David Harris has yet to receive similar acknowledgment for his production, the Jets do feel very strongly about Hitman Harris and his abilities. If Beason’s deal tops the market value, how far off will Harris’ numbers be? Will he meet or exceed Bart Scott’s six-year, $48M contract in 2009?

EDIT BY BENT: One huge difference here is the fact that Beason’s rookie deal had not yet expired. With one year left at $1.4m that makes the contract worth $51.4m over six years, an average rate of $8.5m, which puts Harris’ value just below that, where we figured it was all along.

TJB Hall of Fame: Kevin Mawae

by Angel Navedo on July 28th, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Kevin Mawae was the catalyst for change at a time when the Jets needed to bury the tortured past and develop a successful, hard-nosed identity for the future. He was nasty, reliable and, because the Seattle Seahawks declined to retain his services, he was available.

The Jets signed Mawae to a five-year, $16.8M contract in February 1998—the highest salary ever awarded to a center at the time. There was no denying then, as there’s no denying now, that every dime was money well spent.

In a game enamored with skill positions, Mawae’s grace, agility, and startling quickness was a challenge to anyone who ever doubted a lineman’s athleticism. His versatility took him from left tackle to right guard before finally settling down at center during his final season with the Seahawks.

He then re-established the center position once he put on his No. 68 jersey for the Jets.

Mawae was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, six with the Jets for every season from 1999 to 2004. He’s also an eight-time All-Pro and was selected to the NFL 2000′s All-Decade Team. (more…)

Buzz: Braddock fuels a Sanchez hate machine

by Angel Navedo on May 26th, 2011 at 4:11 pm

Unfortunately, I couldn’t ignore this on TJB much longer. Jayson Braddock’s Mark Sanchez “takedown” at theXlog.com has buzzed a little on Jets forums and Twitter for the past day, and it’s so unbelievably bad, I had trouble figuring out where to begin.

Ultimately, I decided to nuke his opinion since the grammatical corrections would border condescending (and would be too much extra work). I’d like to keep it a little classy.

There are plenty of reasonable criticisms to make of Sanchez’s play since he’s been in the NFL. His completion percentages aren’t impressive, his field vision needs to improve, and he needs to adjust more quickly to unexpected defensive wrinkles. For optimistic Jets fans, it’s not a big deal because experience is the cure. For Braddock, hinging the future on Sanchez is absolutely hopeless.

The self-proclaimed NFL Scout simplified Sanchez’s two-year career, but not before wishing for more Peyton Manning-Tom Brady showdowns, making the all-too-easy Trent Dilfer comparison, and suggesting Brad Smith is a franchise quarterback in waiting.

Oh, and he also implied Sanchez is gay in the most clichéd ways imaginable. I hate incendiary journalism.

Buzz: Cromartie makes it a little easier for the Jets?

by Angel Navedo on May 16th, 2011 at 5:55 pm

Well, general manager Mike Tannenbaum’s job will be a little easier when the NFL finally ends the lockout and officially re-opens for business.

The screen capture above, should the image not load, is a tweet from restricted free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie declaring his intentions to remain with the Jets. He’s aligned his vision with Rex Ryan’s and intends to win a Super Bowl next season with Gang Green.

@A_Cromartie31
I’m going to b a JET. Like Rex say we will win the SB this year.

Sweet! Now, about that whole lockout and inactive collective-bargaining agreement situation. Oh, and Cromartie’s status as a restricted free agent still leaves this as unsettled as it was before the tweet.

There’s a lot to be accomplished between now and whenever then arrives.

Here’s some reaction from Cromartie’s agent regarding the sixth-year pro’s Twitter declaration:

Audible: … if you could crank call Roger Goodell?

by Angel Navedo on May 10th, 2011 at 4:41 pm

You should know them well by now. The 12 Angry Mascots are back with a new Atom video, featuring non-Jets Raheem Brock and Chester Pitts (hence, the Audible), and the locked-out NFL’ers are spending their time crank calling the Commish.

Which leads into the question I’m here to pose to you today. Consider this an open thread of sorts. What would you say in a 10-second crank call to Roger Goodell?

Things to know about Greg McElroy

by Angel Navedo on April 30th, 2011 at 5:50 pm

Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy was summoned by the Jets with the fifth pick of the seventh-round (208th overall). The operative logic here is to groom a backup behind Mark Sanchez for insurance or trade bait some time down the line. It’s a low-risk, high-reward option should McElroy develop into a Matt Cassel/Matt Schaub-caliber player.

McElroy rolled the Crimson Tide to a 24-3 record during his Alabama career, completing 66.26% of his passes for 5,580 yards, 39 touchdowns, and 10 picks. McElroy’s performances set Alabama records for lowest interception percentage and highest completion percentage.

In his campus agility tests, McElroy clocked a 5.03 40-yard dash time, benched 225 pounds 19 times, and went up 28 inches on his vertical jump.

The 6’2″, 228-pound quarterback was also quite the student-athlete, completing his Business Marketing degree in three years and graduating in 2009 with a 3.86 GPA. He’s “currently working on a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration.” (So he could set his sights on Mike Tannenbaum’s job before threatening Sanchez’s.)
