More rumors have been flying around about the Jets, and some possible moves that I might make. After getting an email from The Ed(itor) that tickled my brain, I thought it might be good to address some of the talk that’s “floating” out in the ether.
Michael Turner and the Jets
Kevin Acee’s article in the San Diego Union-Tribune has raised a lot of eyebrows in Buffalo, Dallas, Tennessee and New York. In the article, Acee notes that ” the Chargers are dealing with four suitors for backup running back.”
Not a huge grammar buff, but “are dealing with” leads one to think that the teams are in ongoing negotiatins. Could the Jets really be talking to the Chargers about this move? Yes, absolutely, that’s Tannenbaum’s M.O. Will the Jets really bring in Turner too? It’s hard to say, but I think it unlikely. Depending on what compensation the Chargers are looking for. I am guessing Tannenbaum would value Turner now that he has Jones … as a middle round pick … maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder? All signs of this article point to this being the Chargers front office working the teams against each other to get the best price for Turner.
After stealing Thomas Jones from the Bears (and I do think they stole him, but I still not sure about Jones’ long term impact) and seemingly settling on Leon Washington as the change of pace / third down back, I just don’t see that the Jets are serious about bringing in Turner.
Dewayne Robertson Trade
Last offseason, I predicted that Robertson might be playing his last season with the Jets in 2006, and so far, I seem to be wrong yet again. Robertson is an interesting case, and with the glut of lineman (mostly ends though) that the Jets have recently picked up, could they be planning to move Robertson and plug a hole on the line with a recent acquistion?
Most of the players, though the Jets picked up with the exception of Kenyon Coleman are backups/rotational players. I don’t doubt that the Jets are considering other options for DT long-term and yes, Robertson’s play was better at the end of last season, but what’s the market for a player that most other teams would look to as somone who hasn’t lived up to where they were picked in the draft? Compensation that I have read about first round picks seems out of the question. Moving Robertson is a possibility, and but I do think the Jets would be better served to keep him for the season. He’s in a contract year, I believe, so at the very least, that should get his attention.
Jonathan Vilma Trade
I don’t normally frequent message boards, but I hear that this is still being discussed. As it goes, Vilma would be traded for a first rounder or to move higher into the first round. This then precipitates the Jets determining another starter through the draft, or possibly a situation like the Jets moving Victor Hobson inside and allowing someone like Bowens to take over duties on the edge.
I just don’t see not giving a player of Vilma’s caliber a second year in a new system, but that’s hard to really weigh out without knowing what’s being offered for him? The problem is, this is the year where the organization is likely to get the most in a trade for Vilma. If he has another “down” year in 2007 and they want to trade him then, they might get less than they could right now. Trading Vilma to me seems like a Faustian bargain.
The Ed(itor) emailed me and asked what picks the Jets have in the upcoming draft. I gotta say, it isn’t easy to figure this stuff out, especially when they don’t disclose the draft picks in trades, but here’s the best I can do right now. Here’s what I have to the best of my knowledge, and help from wikipedia. Corrections are appreciated, just let us know in the comments.
1st Round:
Overall pick #25
2nd Round:
Overall pick # 37 (from WAS for 2006 2nd round draft swap)
Overall pick # 59
3rd Round:
Overall pick #89
4th Round:
Overall pick #120 (conditionally traded to SF for Barlow?)
5th Round:
Overall pick #154
6th Round:
Overall pick #185 (traded to DAL for Sean Ryan?)
7th Round:
Overall NY pick#193 (from DET for Jon McGraw? conditional? Now to DAL?)
Overall pick #217 (traded to DAL for Sean Ryan?)
Some more muddiness:
- SF has an undisclosed pick from the NY Jets, is that the 4th?
- NYJ has a 6th or 7th pick from TB (for Jolley)
- NYJ have an undisclosed pick from MIN (for Bollinger)
- OAK has an undisclosed pick from the Jets (for Bobby Hamilton)
- Does GB have a claim to a pick?
UPDATE: This post has been changed to reflect the notes below from Ferragmo and Gary Grund
My cousin-in-law, Matt just sent me this email:
6:30 AM bus leaves NYC …
9:30 Gets to Foxborough
9:31 Tailgate begins
10:00 We start making fun of all the New Englanders wearing jean shorts.
10:30 We paint our faces.
11:00 First person in our group pukes
12:00 Start running rampant in the parking lot.
1:00 Game on
Matt is headed with about a crew of 10 staunch die-hards from the E4 tailgate crew to cheer on our boys to victory. Sounds like a plan we are very jealous of, especially the part about making fun of Pats fans in jean shorts. Know this fellow Jets fans: our team could lose this weekend, but at least we don’t wear jean shorts.
To all those headed to Foxborough this weekend, Godspeed and have a great time!
Drack sent on an interesting email (and I see he posted similar thoughts in the Kassell thread). All the same, here are his thoughts on the Jets personnel and how adaptable they are to the 3-4:
With all signs pointing to a defensive scheme switch to a base 3-4 from a 4-3, I have been waiting for someone to provide an honest, informed* opinion concerning which current players fit well in a 3-4 set-up. Thanks to the SportsSpyder, I found one, and to my surprise it was on the official Jets site. While I can't say the commentary here is newsbreaking, the frank nature of some comments (ex. “OLB Victor Hobson may lack the speed and athleticism to provide what the team is now looking for”) are intriguing considering where the story resides.
A crystal ball or yet another smoke screen?
Best,
Drack*Who is consider an “informed” source is highly subjective
This one comes from the eMailbag, thanks to Drack for pointing me in the direction of this awesome article from F.O. I will let Drack explain:
The great debate has started here regarding whether the Jets should trade up in the draft and secure themselves a projected elite QB or trade down and continue to stockpile picks. There are valid arguments on both sides, obviously, and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.For those that value trading up (or staying put at #4, depending on how things go), Football Outsiders has posted yet another compelling read. This one charts the potential success of QBs based on *specific* college stats. According to the feature, there seems to be a few, collegiate-career commonalities among successful NFL QBs. Football Outsiders applies these commonalities to Leinart, Cutler and Young in the feature online…
Also, check down in the comments thread and you'll note that one astute Jets fan asked if he could get a sneak peek at Patrick Ramsey's projection. Later in the same thread, the feature's author answers him on Ramsey and shows how he stacks up against Leinart.
Tip of the cap to Drack for the heads up.
It looks like some of you might have picked apart this idea already in the Cimini chat post, but a good friend, who comments as henigin emailed me last night, and sent me this link to the article on ESPN about Matt Schaub, but also an interesting idea about what the Jets might be working on.
Everyone is reporting that the Jets are trying to get Ramsey, but are more interested in Schaub. Is it possible that they are trying to get Ramsey so that they can trade him to the Falcons with Abraham to get Schaub? I know that sounds like a MLB or NBA-type trade succession (or fantasy football), but if Atlanta is looking to get a good backup also, Ramsey would fit the bill there…
I don't disagree, and it's an interesting idea at the very least. What I would say is that Atlanta (and i guess GM Rich McKay) seem to be like that guy in your fantasy football league, who wants to be a player in the trade market, but overvalues his players to the point of absolute annoyance.
Woke up, got outta bed, dragged a comb across my head….
R in CT noticed my post yesterday on Jets satire, and offered up this gem from his blog, a diary of a day in the life of a Jets fan. He chronicles the 2005 October Jets loss to the Bills, Bill Simmons style.
I find some similarities to R in CT's emotions and mine, though my ritual involves more flinging of objects and shocked expressions from my wife. Maybe the fact that I don't have any kids yet plays into that… I act as the only one in my household…
As a plug to R in CT's blog at large, any blog that includes pictures of old Aussie Energizer battery schill Jacko, gets our wholehearted approval. Oy!

Valentines day is around the corner, and Jacob thoughtfully emailed me to alert me to the presence of a big sale the Jets are throwing:
The Jets organization is having a big blow out sale! You have to go to their web page. They are selling some weird items…a Jets thong? A sexy Jets nightie? I can't say that I'm not surprised they had trouble selling this stuff. I don't know how many female Jet fans are out there; but somehow I doubt that many of them wear thongs.
We think you're right, and we doubt those who do, wear Jets thongs… although we are talking about Long Island, and New Jersey here… so scratch that. I must admit, I am more partial to something like the picture above… for the record, girls wearing sports stuff can be attractive, but I must say, seeing someone in a Jets nightie would be about the last thing on my mind at that point, and wouldn't be helping matters… but to each his own.
If you have the time, check out the complex over the next few days… today, Aussie sensation Ben Graham (and others) will be at the Hofstra complex to meet fans. If you go, take pictures and say g'day to Ben for us!
