Highlights of the Jets and Jaguars game from yesterday. My notes from watching the highlights:

First Sanchez INT — I equally blame the play call and the quarterback. The play call asks for Sanchez to roll left, the more awkward way for a righty to roll and throw. Watch the play and note Sanchez not setting or even throwing on the downbeat of his right foot (which leads to a lobbed pass). Yes, there was a rusher coming at him and he had to hurry, but Cotchery has already beaten Mathis, the covering corner and a pass five more yards downfield is a touchdown. As it is, Sanchez lobs the pass, it hangs up inside (unforgivable) where there are two defenders. I credit Schottenheimer for his stones in trying that, but risking so big so early against a team that was evenly matched and who deferred seems foolish to me. Bad call and bad execution by both Schotty and Sanchez.

MJD Touchdown — At this point, I knew the Jets would lose the game as I recalled what Accuscore predicted. The Jets inability to not only contain but to rightly tackle MJD was extremely troubling. The announcers were talking about how well Jones-Drew ran inside, and he did, but if Jenkins was present, there would have been a substantial difference in how well the Jets could have contained him. This was another Miami Monday Night game … the Jets knew what they had to do defensively and had two weeks to prep for Jones-Drew, but in their wisdom decided to take a week off. Look how that turned out.

Crisp Sanchez — When Sanchez looks good, he looks really good. I do like how Schottenheimer conducts his offense, and I think it can lend to Sanchez’s strengths as you saw on that Cotchery TD. I’ll get back to Schotty in a minute. It’s good to see him battling back from adversity and I have to remind myself that he’s a rookie and stands to get a good deal better, but when the wheels come off for him it gets ugly quickly. I like what I’ve seen so far, and since the Bills game, I’ve been looking for progress from him and I’ve seen enough to make me happy, but I’ve also seen enough to know that I’m watching for 2010, and have been for weeks now.

One of the biggest strengths of Manning and Brady’s career is that even if the offense has changed as their personnel and abilities have changed, they’ve had a steady rudder during their formative years (Tom Moore in Indy, Charlie Weis in NE). I don’t see the same holding true in New York. One way or another Schottenheimer will be ousted or will take a job elsewhere.

Pressure Under Pressure — The Jets are supposed to be a team built to slobberknock the QB. Some days I agree with that, others, I don’t. Yesterday was one of those days where the Jets couldn’t get to the QB. 2 Sacks and only 6 registered QB Hits isn’t what you want to see from the Jets against David Garrard.

Cover Corner — The Jets had trouble deciding where to use Darrelle Revis and it cost them. Sheppard and Lowery struggled with their charges and whoever they moved Revis to was silent, but the other corners we’ren’t pulling their weight in the end.

This is What it Sounds Like, When the Dogs Cry — Braylon Edwards made some insane catches, but the lob to the breadbasket for the two pointer was crushing. Know I know how Cleveland fans felt. Still he’s a fantastic talent, and Sanchez probably should have put some more mustard (haha) on the ball.

The Real Backbreaker — With five minutes left, a complement of timeouts and the ball on the seventeen, I thought that the Jaguars would play their game and run the ball as much as they could. Look at the plays that led to the two-minute warning, and subsequent Jets “freeway” plays.

Jacksonville Jaguars at 5:04, (1st play from scrimmage 4:56)
1-10-JAX 17 (4:56) Pass incomplete deep left to M.Sims-Walker.
2-10-JAX 17 (4:50) Pass short left to M.Sims-Walker to JAX 26 for 9 yards (K.Rhodes, D.Harris).
3-1-JAX 26 (4:06) Pass short left to Z.Miller pushed ob at JAX 37 for 11 yards (D.Revis).
1-10-JAX 37 (4:00) M.Jones-Drew left guard to JAX 38 for 1 yard (M.Devito, D.Harris).
2-9-JAX 38 (3:21) Pass incomplete deep right to M.Sims-Walker.
3-9-JAX 38 (3:14) (Shotgun) Pass short middle to M.Thomas to NYJ 47 for 15 yards (D.Strickland).
1-10-NYJ 47 (2:34) #78 Black reports eligible. Pass deep middle to M.Lewis to NYJ 14 for 33 yards (K.Rhodes).

Passes. Didn’t this pass defense get together and have a pow-wow about how they were going to up their game this week? The killer was the 33 yard play that came down to miscommunication between Leonhard and Rhodes, it sounds like, but you have to wonder how Marcedes Lewis gets so free down the seam of the defense.

While some statisticians think that the Jets are in a clear space to win this game, here’s some interesting stats from ESPN-Accuscore. If MJD runs for 75+ yards and gets a touchdown, the odds switch to Jacksonville.
