There were rumblings all offseason that the Jets were going to try and pursue Plaxico once free agency started. To me, this officially signals the end of Braylon Edwards career as a Jet. The Jets have shown no indication that they want to retain Braylon, and this finally puts the nail in the coffin and proves that they are ready to move on.
Plaxico is a big body that would be an immediate red zone target. Obviously, the big question is whether he can come back from two years in prison and be a productive player. I don’t think anybody is expecting him to be the player he was when he lead the Giants to the Super Bowl in 2008, but if he proves to be somewhat close to that, I think they would be more than satisfied.
UPDATE: This could be a play by the Jets to show their hand … that they’re tapped out and it’s up to Nnamdi to stop with the contract back and forth. It’s not a good sign, of course, but more importantly I don’t think that it signals that the Jets are done on this matter. -Bassett
UPDATE 2: This is geting confusing. Lombardi says that the Jets “were told” that they were out of the race. Lombo is also saying that the Cowboys were fist pumping on the field, and that Nnamdi “wants’ to play for the Cowboys more than anywhere (his parents did go to school in Texas). To make this more difficult, NFLN just noted that a Dallas Star-Telegram reporter tweeted that the in fact the Cowboys are out and there’s another mystery team in the mix. Upon hearing this, Lombo said “there must be a team in this that has done a great job of keeping it all a secret.” – Bassett
UPDATE 3: Schefter seems to think it’s the Eagles. – Bassett
As Bassett pointed out on Twitter, this transaction could simply be to clear up some cap room for Nnamdi Asomugha. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Brunell back on the roster for less money once the Aso situation gets figured out.
Brunell was a huge mentor and leader in the locker room last season, so I find it very hard to believe management would release him for any other reason than to clear up cap room for something big, like Aso. The only remaining quarterbacks on the roster behind Sanchez are Kevin O’Connell, rookie Greg McElroy and Drew Willy.
In other words, I think we’ll be seeing you soon, Brunell…
There is now a barometer to gauge the going rates for premier inside linebackers in 2011. Carolina signed Jon Beason—a three-time Pro Bowl and two-time All-Pro inside linebacker—to a monster five-year, $50M extension with $25M guaranteed.
Although David Harris has yet to receive similar acknowledgment for his production, the Jets do feel very strongly about Hitman Harris and his abilities. If Beason’s deal tops the market value, how far off will Harris’ numbers be? Will he meet or exceed Bart Scott’s six-year, $48M contract in 2009?
EDIT BY BENT: One huge difference here is the fact that Beason’s rookie deal had not yet expired. With one year left at $1.4m that makes the contract worth $51.4m over six years, an average rate of $8.5m, which puts Harris’ value just below that, where we figured it was all along.
Tagged Bart Scott, david harris, Jon Beason, New York Jets |FOXsports.com’s Adam Schein is reporting it’s a five year deal, worth $50 million, with approximately $24 million guaranteed. In addition, Schein notes that Santonio left money on the table because he “Loves the Jets and Sanchez.”
As Rich Cimini points out the Jets took care of their first priority, and now they are focused on signing Nnamdi Asomugha.
UPDATE 11:36am – Adam Schefter is reporting the deal is worth $50 million. The $24 million guaranteed, is the highest guarantee given to a WR in NFL history.
On a side note, Manish Mehta of the Daily News just tweeted that CB Drew Coleman is ready to move on from the Jets.
Stay tuned…
