Yesterday, Rex Ryan spoke to the press and took questions after Friday’s midday practice at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Here’s the transcript, provided by the Jets:

Injuries, let’s get this and get out. Fast Friday, right? Out: Logan Payne and Robert Turner. Questionable: David Harris with his toe. He was limited today in practice. All three of these guys were limited: David Harris, Santonio Holmes with his knee and quad, Eric Smith with his ankle. All those guys are questionable. Probable, the rest of them: Plaxico Burress, ankle, and they were all full practice. Plaxico Burress, Mark Brunell, calf, Marquice Cole, with an ankle, [John] Conner, ankle, [Jeff] Cumberland, hamstring, [Marcus] Dixon, knee, [Wayne] Hunter, knee, [Derrick] Mason, knee, Joe McKnight, finger, and Sione Pouha, knee and ankle. All those guys are probable.

I feel good about David playing. The other two guys, I think it’s questionable whether they play. I’m hoping they do, but we’ll see. I think if the game was today, it would be questionable that they would play.

On if Smith and Holmes would be more questionable than Harris…

David is questionable. I don’t know. You guys fill in the blanks. You saw him out there [smiling].

On how he feels about Harris’ chances of playing…

I do feel good about David playing. I think with Tone [Holmes] and Eric Smith, they’re questionable. They looked good early in the week in practice, but right now, they’re questionable. They did get kind of hurt in practice. It wasn’t a game thing, I don’t believe, with either one of them. Eric just rolled his ankle.

On if he thinks Jacksonville should not even prepare for Holmes playing against them…

That’s probably a good message to send to them, and Plax, too [joking]. I know it says probable here. That happened to me one time, playing Dallas. I won’t say who the coach was, but he was a big dude. Anyway, the guy was listed as out the whole time. Then, all of a sudden, not only did he play, he had 30-something carries in the game. I was like, “How does that happen?” That’s the miracle of medicine. That was one of the all-timers [joking].

On Jacksonville WR Jason Hill saying Darrelle Revis was overrated…

He said he was overrated? Well, the good news is we get to find out. He’s coming in here and that’ll be fun. I can tell Jason Hill this, and anybody else. There are a lot of good receivers in this league and all that. The best corner in football, and it’s not close, is Darrelle Revis. We’ll see how he feels after the game.

On Jason Hill being doubtful for Sunday…

You’re kidding, right?

On the notion of a reserve wide receiver calling out Revis…

We like it because Darrelle will take care of himself on the field like he always does. Chad Ochocinco used to call me out and would always call Bart [Scott] out and say he would punch him in the face and all that. Those were always fun. I don’t know if that’s this guy’s humor or not. With Chad, you knew it was.

On how he thinks the offensive line might respond this week…

I think we’ve always prided ourselves on it. One of the units I’m most proud of, obviously everybody talks about the defense, but it’s the offensive line. The first picture I ever had up there, and it’s still up there, is that offensive line because I think you win games right there, your offensive line and your defense. I think it’s a prideful group. The fact is we won the game, yet we know we’d like to win it in a different fashion, probably. That’s a great offensive line. We’re going against a tremendous front obviously, especially based on last week and what they were able to do to Chris Johnson. It’s going to be a big challenge, but I have faith in our offensive line.

On how many hits he thought Mark Sanchez took against Dallas…

It seemed like he got knocked down about 10 times.

On how concerned he was to see Sanchez knocked down 10 times…

Right, you don’t want your quarterback to get hit that many times, that’s for sure. That’s a true statement, no doubt.

On why he thinks the Jets still have a top defense in the NFL despite its performance against Dallas…

It’s based on fact. The proof is in the pudding. You don’t bluff your way into being the number one defense in the league two years ago, being 3 [in 2010] and having a history of being a top two or three defense in this league every year. I just know that’s what we have, that kind of ability. I believe in our coaching staff, the continuity. There is no reason to doubt it. That team was like third of fourth in the league in offense last year and they got a lot of opportunities with the ball. They’re going to move the ball on a lot of people.

On if anything went wrong with the defense against Dallas…

We made more mistakes than we’re accustomed to making, that’s for sure. I always think it’s a joke when the other coach will be talking about a team and not give the proper credit to the other side. The Dallas Cowboys are pretty darn good and everybody that plays them will figure that out.

On if the “seven glaring defensive errors” he mentioned during Thursday’s news conference were an exact number and if those were errors by the secondary…

No, I wasn’t talking about the secondary. They made less mistakes than the rest of them. That was my unofficial number. [Mike] Pettine thinks it’s more or whatever. I understand, but that’s the number I had.

On what is classified as “glaring”..

Well, a mental mistake would be glaring. When a guy goes for like 64 yards, it’s glaring. There were other ones, maybe even the first play of the game, there was a mistake. There were some of those things. We made mistakes as coaches, as well. We’ve got to get better and each week that’s the challenge to everybody, not just the players, but the coaches as well.

On if the defense is more capable of rushing the passer this season…

I’m not sure. Our leading sacker, we’re playing him this week, with Drew Coleman. He’s on the other team. I feel good about our pass rush. I feel good about being able to stop the run. We’re going to have to this week, so we’ll see. But I’ll take this defense.

On if Maurice Jones-Drew reminds him of anybody…

It’s tough because he’s part Jim Nance. I go back to that, because he’s like a bull. Yet, he’s got speed and little-man moves and all that. Jim Nance was huge, but a bulldozer-type guy that can run you over, and a neck. He’s just short. He’s kind of like that. I’ll throw in, a combination of Emerson Boozer and Jim Nance. We’re in the throwback mode, we’ll go back a little bit.

On the key to stopping Jones-Drew…

You better have a bunch of guys on him. The thing is, too, he hits. You have to wrap him, because he’s a spinner, too. He’s got great body control and power and balance and speed. It’s a great combination.

On if he’s concerned that Darrelle Revis didn’t know who Jason Hill was…

If you gave him his number, he’d know. I think that’ll be it. That’s how he studies film. He really doesn’t care who he’s goes up against. We’ve all seen it. Who are we kidding? He’s the best in the league. It’s not close. Jason Hill, [Kassim] Osgood, any of those guys that are out there, will find that out. Just like they do every week when they go up against this guy.

On if Kenrick Ellis will play this week…

That’ll be a decision we’ll make at gametime.

On if he’s concerned of a letdown against Jacksonville…

No. There’s no chance of this. When you look at it, I’m not denying it was a very emotional game last week, there’s no doubt about that. But if we’re not at our best, we won’t win this game. The last time we played them, they beat us at our place. That’s all we have to go back to. We were a playoff team that went to the AFC Championship game. That’s a good football team. They’ve got the same record as we do right now.

On if their defense should’ve performed better against Dallas since the Cowboys had three new players on the offensive line…

I guess if you look at it that way, then sure. That team’s loaded. You can say what you want. Look at any angle you want. That team is loaded up front. When you look at the way they protected against us, it was six and seven-man protections a lot of times. If you’re just going to base everything on how many sacks you get or whatever, then you’re looking at the game, maybe differently than I do. I look at it as an overall unit. That team is pretty good. You’ve got two good receivers. The one kid’s got great speed. You’ve got one of the best tight ends in football, caught 100 balls. The running back runs about a 4.3 in the 40. That’s a good group any way you slice it and they’re well coached.

The following is a transcript of Rex Ryan’s news conference following Friday’s midday practice at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, provided by the Jets:

First off, there are three changes in the injury report. Mark Brunell and John Conner fully practiced today, so they are full participants. Santonio Holmes had an illness but he practiced full. So [the players who are] out, you have Logan Payne and Rob Turner. Everybody else on this list I read will be probable for the game, and they all practiced full. Plaxico [Burress] with an ankle, Mark Brunell, calf, John Conner, ankle, [Jeff] Cumberland, hamstring, [Marcus] Dixon, knee, Kenrick Ellis, hamstring, Santonio Holmes, illness, Derrick Mason, knee, Joe McKnight, illness, Brandon Moore, illness, Ropati [Pitoitua], ankle, Sione Pouha, a knee, and Darrelle Revis, hip. Now, a comment about that first game last night [Packers vs. Saints], it was just an average game, I thought, so it wasn’t that exciting to me [joking]. I thought our Giants-Jets preseason game was much more entertaining than that.

On if the Eagles-Jets preseason game was more exciting than last night’s game…

The Eagles-Jets game was probably right up there [joking].

On if he could be any happier about the current health of the team…

You never want to lose anybody. We’ve lost two guys, but you’re exactly right. We feel healthy, we feel strong. We’re ready to go. Our guys are flying around right now.

On the offensive line…

Well, [there is] the one new starter in Wayne Hunter, but he did start four of the biggest games of the year for us last year, so we feel really confident with Wayne there. [We are] breaking in some backups. Our depth probably isn’t as experienced as you might like, but they’re young, ascending players. Our starting five’s been together now for a while. I feel great about it.

On what Nick Folk showed during training camp to win the kicker battle…

Nick Novak kicked really well for us, so it was good. I think competition sometimes brings out the best in everybody. I felt great about Nick Folk all along anyway, but that Novak kid, I think, will be kicking in this league. The young man did a tremendous job for us. I feel great about where Nick Folk is right now. There’s so many Nicks it gets confusing [joking], but Nick Folk was a Pro Bowl kicker his first year, [then] kind of had an off year. He kicked well for us last year, hit some game winners for us, broke the all-time record, longest field goal in Jets history. There’s a lot of things to like about Nick Folk.

On Folk playing against his former team this Sunday…

I think there always is something extra. I don’t think there’s any doubt. Maybe he doesn’t realize it, but it’s going to be special going against them. It’s almost like, “Well, I’ll show you.” You’re right. When I go back to Baltimore, even in that preseason game, I want to win. [I] never did. You want to show them that, “Hey, you made a mistake.” I think that’s human nature.

On how he would’ve handled the situation between Burress and the Giants…

I don’t really want to deal in the what-ifs and all that kind of stuff. I don’t think that’s fair to anybody. You got the hindsight being 20-20. I’d rather not comment on that.

On how he knows his team is ready for Sunday’s game…

I think everything. Just seeing the way guys are, the energy that they have in the huddle, even. Guys running the ball. You see the defense is almost to the point it’s ridiculous. Our guys are flying to the football, and then they fly back to the [spot of the] ball. They challenge themselves to get better every day. That’s what I’m seeing. Today was our best practice. So that’s where you like it. Our offense, with Plax and Mason and all of those guys, I think we’re going to do some great things.

On how much information he really got from recently-signed Andrew Sendejo, a former Cowboy…

Nothing. I loved Romo’s comments, because he knows that I know, that it’s like, “Who cares?” And then when I mentioned yesterday about how we stole their hand signals and all that. If they flinched for one second, that is amusing to me. I hope my brother did, I hope he flinched a little bit on it, but I don’t think so.

On how often he speaks to his brother, Dallas Defensive Coordinator Rob Ryan, during the year under normal circumstances…

Probably three or four times a week, at least.

On if he has spoken to his brother yet this week…

Oh yeah. The usual. Business as usual with each other, that’s for sure.

On if he is worried about trading secrets with his brother…

No, we rip each other. That’s what this week’s about. You’re just ripping each other. The rest of the time you’re comforting, you’re asking questions, you kind of pick each other’s brains a little bit, but this week is strictly about ripping the other guy.

On if he’s gotten a particularly good rip on his brother…

I have, but, really, this being the tenth anniversary of 9/11, I just want to share those with my brother and back and forth, because this game is so special to so many people and I certainly don’t want to take away from that.

On Sendejo commenting that if Rob lost weight and cut his hair he would look more like Rex…

That’s what I’m talking about. I like the way you build people up, because that’s what I’m always about. I appreciate that. [joking]

On the team running back to their positions after a play in practice…

Literally, running back to where you spot the ball. It’s just one of those things, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it. “Jog back,” well, no, our guys are sprinting back to it. They want to be great. They want to be champions. They’re going to try find a way to see that happen this year.

On Shonn Greene being able to carry the load this season…

I’ve said all along, I feel he’s ready. I don’t think there’s any doubt. We have only a first-ballot Hall of Famer [LaDainian Tomlinson] behind him, but he’s also going to be a primary guy in third down. Shonn’s ready. There’s no doubt. It’s going to be interesting to see how people play us. If people want to play us back there in seven-man space and guard against our weapons on the outside, then you may see a whole lot of Shonn Greene. Having Shonn back there, I think people are going to still have to stop the run first. I think that’s going to open up things on the outside for us.

On if he referred to Joe McKnight as a first-ballot Hall of Famer…

I wasn’t going to say Joe right now. He might be a first-ballot Hall of Famer at his high school [joking]. Joe’s got talent, there’s no question, but I think LT has earned that right.

On what he has seen from DE Muhammad Wilkerson…

I think we knew we were going to be real fortunate if he fell to where we were picking. But he has come in, he understands what we want from that position. I think he has great leadership with Sione Pouha and Mike DeVito. He’s come in here, he works every day and he has some God-given ability. This guy, let’s face it, he can touch both walls here. He has a lot of things that are good. And he reminds me a little bit of Shaun Ellis. He does, he reminds me a lot of Shaun.

The Jets have provided this transcript of owner Woody Johnson’s news conference after yesterday’s midday practice at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center:

On his thoughts about playing on 9/11…

It’s just a big game for us. It’s a great honor to have been selected by the NFL to play this game. It brings back a lot of memories. We had our kickoff luncheon in New York City last Wednesday before we played the Eagles. Some of us had a chance to visit part of the site. You can’t get close to the site. It was pretty close to the site, but you could feel it through the people that were working there. The site just gives off a feeling of what happened. A lot of our guys were [young] when it happened. But for those of us who were there, it will be a poignant moment.

On what he remembers from 9/11…

Just how the country became focused instantaneously on one thing, and that was what happened at that site, on that day, at that moment. Everybody of course remembers where they were. I remember just the fact that New York, and the country, became paralyzed momentarily. The whole country. The bridges were stopped. My brother was over in New Jersey. He couldn’t get back. He was on his bike. He persuaded a fisherman and gave him a couple bucks to take him across the Hudson to get him back, and then he rode up. My wife, who wasn’t my wife at that point, but she was late to work. She was working for Sandler O’Neal. They lost I think 40 or 50 percent of their workers at Sandler O’Neal, typical of a lot of companies, and she just happened to be late because she was out with clients the night before and didn’t go in. And she talked to her boss as she was coming in late and he said, “Get the hell out of here.” And then the phone went dead.

Memories of the appearance of 9/11, we saw the buildings go down. Before they went down you saw the little post-its come down and people jumping. And the cops. It’s tough. I was at the memorial dinner on Wednesday and there was one tree that made it. And that tree is going to be in the memorial, it’ll be on the memorial site. I served for the last 10 years on the memorial board, so I’ve watched this thing. I’ve had a chance to meet a lot of the families and talk to them about their kids or their wives or husbands that were lost.

And then going through the process of building it, and it seemed forever to get it done, but that’s what it takes. We had a lot of different constituencies that wanted and should have had been a part of the discussion and they were a part of the discussion because we took the time. The process lent itself to creating something that will, I think when you see it, there’s no way to describe it. When you see it, you’re going to feel it immediately.

On if his wife’s office was in one of the towers that got hit…

Her office was in the tower.

On which building his wife’s firm was in…

I don’t really recall which one it was.

On if his wife’s boss was lost…

He was lost. Some of them made it out, because I guess they saw the side of the building. They could see the other building. I guess it was Building 2, it was the second building to get hit. They saw it, and so those guys went down and they just made it apparently.

On him relating a pretty harrowing story about 9/11…

Everybody has a story. There are thousands of stories from that day.

On playing football Sunday…

We will be playing football on Sunday. I think it’s a great honor in light of that and in light of this 10th anniversary.

On if he spoke to the NFL about being selected to host a game on 9/11…

Did I speak to them? No, I didn’t ask specifically for this. But the previous year I was asking for things, if you remember [joking].

On the security measures for the game, since it occurs on 9/11…

I can tell you that we, for every game, do everything that we know to protect our fans and to protect the stadium. We are extremely rigorous, our security people are in [contact with] all the security forces in the world as far as I know. Anything that comes up, we know about. So we’re very well plugged in with New Jersey, New York and other areas. Our job is to create a safe environment and we fully intend to do that.

On if the terror threat caused the team to increase security…

As far as I know, no. Our security is already at a pretty high level. We’ll wait to see any recommendations any of these security forces make and we’ll, of course, go by that. We’re prepared.

On if there will be any kind of national security presence at the game…

I can’t go in to specific details, but yes. I think you’ve been around me long enough to know that we’re pretty thorough.

On if players should be allowed to wear special equipment commemorating 9/11 without getting fined…

I’m not aware of this controversy, but shoes don’t seem like a big thing to me.

On Coach Ryan saying that he hopes no Cowboys fans are in the stadium…

Yes, I heard that. You know Rex, Rex didn’t mean it that way. Rex is enthusiastic. He’s very confident in his team. He has a high degree of affection for his team and I think it was coming from that light rather than the other. We have to provide safety. I don’t care what jersey you’re wearing, you’re going to be safe at our stadium. That’s just the fact of the matter. We have a responsibility to protect you and make sure you have a good time, as well, so he didn’t mean it that way.

On how ready his team is to begin the season…

It’s our team. This is the fans’ team.

On how ready he thinks the team is to begin the season…

They look good, they really do. It’s a Friday practice, so it’s when you see it all come together, so they looked ready. They’re ready. They can’t wait to play a real game. It’s Sunday night at 8:20.

On where he was on Sept. 11…

I was working out.

On if he was in New York City…

I was in the city. I was working out. I saw it [on television]. I saw a little thing hit the building and, like a lot of other people, I thought it was just like a little Cessna or something. I didn’t know what happened.

On if he saw it on television…

I saw it. All the women, they were all on the machines and they were looking at this thing and I was somewhere else. I remember hearing this collective gasp that got everybody’s attention. We all walked over to see what was going on. It wasn’t until a few minutes later that people started to realize the potential enormity of this. At first it didn’t seem like it was that much of a [problem].

On if the people in the room saw it on the television…

They saw it on the TV. It came on and then by the time I made it back to Fifth Avenue, it was totally bizarre because people were walking the wrong way on Fifth Avenue. Fifth Avenue had been closed. The bridges had already been closed. It’s amazing how fast you can shut this place down, the whole country down. Then, it was everybody being glued to their TVs trying to figure out what is going on here.

On what he thinks this team has that can put it into the Super Bowl…

Number one, it has another year with Rex and our great coaching staff, with the coaching staff, essentially, intact. All of the veterans are back, almost, so you have the same team with more experience and more desire really, because they know how close they’ve been.

On if it’s the Super Bowl or bust for this team…

I don’t know about bust. We’re always going to set our goals the highest possible way. That’s the only way to lead. You don’t lead your troops in to come in 47th.

On if he would consider the season a failure if he does not get to the Super Bowl…

I never consider it a failure because we always get 100 percent. We give it everything we have to give, so that’s all I can ask of our guys to do.

On if he ever thought the season would start on time during the work stoppage…

To be quite honest, I wasn’t sure. I don’t think anybody had a total fix on it because what you do with each agreement is you never know until both parties sign on it. There is no way to know that. We could hear sides and this and that, but really until you sign the thing, you don’t know. I’m happy it worked out, particularly for the fans.

On if he thinks his hiring of Rex Ryan has sparked others to hire head coaches who are not from the typical head-coaching mold…

Absolutely, I think we’ve led in a lot of different ways with the things we’ve done. You can never judge a book by its cover. Although with Rex, I judged it by its cover because when I saw the guy and talked to him for two minutes, he was 45 minutes late to the interview, and even with that, in two seconds you got past that and just could realize that this was a natural leader. He has an affection for the players and he has the Xs and Os, for sure. Beyond that he was always a top defense for the last three years. He had that. I thought he could connect with the players.

On if he thinks the NFL will see more coaches that act like Ryan…

I think Rex is who Rex is, so I think if anybody is going to try to be Rex, that’s not going to work. I think if you are authentic, it’s going to work. If you’re not authentic, the players are going to see right through you, right?

On what he expects from QB Mark Sanchez…

Mark is a very talented young guy and once again it’s his third year. He’s very talented and I think if his confidence level and all that keep going, I think it’s an upward projection for him. He’s going to continue to do very, very well. I could just see him today. He looks good.

On what specifically he saw…

Just his reads and how quickly he’s doing it, and all that.

On if he is happy that he drafted Sanchez…

Absolutely.

As I was listening to Tannenbaum’s press conference I took a few notes that I thought were interesting:

In addition to tendering Edwards there is a possibility that the Jets will tender Leon Washington and Kellen Clemens.

He likes Erik Ainge and Kevin O’Connell as backups but would look into bringinning in some veterans to backup Sanchez.

Expects TJ to be back.

Says the team is undecided on Lito (but chances are pretty good that Lito won’t return, based on his performance and what the Jets will have to pay him come March).

Expects Gholston to return but he certainly did not sound too confident about his future. Stated it will be an important offseason for Vernon.

Expects Sanchez to be ready “well before” camp, sounds like an operation could be performed on Sanchez’s knee however the team hasn’t finalized anything.

Expects Rhodes to return to the team but he didn’t sound confident about what he was preaching.

Says secondary will be a priority after all “Rex loves DB’s.”

Here’s a transcript of Rex Ryan’s postgame press conference:

Opening Statement

Like I told the team, I hate losing. I hate losing. I don’t care, preseason or not, whatever the case, it stinks. You have to give credit to the Rams. They did a good job. They made some plays. One running back was so quick, I never saw his number [laughing]. That was embarrassing. We made way too many mistakes on defense and with the third group. Sometimes unfortunately, this game is too big for some people at times. That’s why not everybody makes this team. I’m looking for Jets. I’m looking for guys that are passionate, tough people and are smart. We made way too many mistakes. It was embarrassing. Two touchdowns they got were off mental mistakes by us. I can’t handle getting beat physically but I can handle it more than when we get beat mentally. That was real unfortunate.

We’re going to have to practice harder with the third group. We got ‘an opportunity’ they call it around here, some scrimmage-type things at the end of our practices. We have to get better. We have to tackle better. I thought the “one” defense bowed their neck pretty good. After that first turnover, I think the Rams were zero-for-five on third down in the first half. The first defense did pretty decent, held them out of the end zone.

We turned the ball over too much, but other than that, I was really happy with the way our offense performed. When you consider that you have three starting offensive linemen out, our quarterbacks were outstanding, all three of them today. I’m disappointed I couldn’t get Harvard [Chris Pizzotti] in, but I’d rather win instead. That’s the way it is.

I thought David Clowney, we saw that speed. I guess they should have read the bio. He’s pretty dang fast. I liked the poise that all three quarterbacks had. [Mark] Sanchez, for a rookie to step in there and his first throw, to unleash one like that, was pretty impressive to me. Again, I was real happy with all three quarterbacks.

On the aggressive Jets defense…

I was calling the defense early on [laughing]. That’s our style. That’s the way we’ll play preseason, regular season, it doesn’t matter. The league knows what we’ll do. We like to pressure. It’s funny, most of those pressures were four-man rushes, they were just disguised pretty well. I thought the guys did a good job of that, moving around, that first group. I was happy with the way we were moving around and disguising things.

On if a quarterback decision will be coming soon…

I think with the way all of them performed, they did outstanding. I though we might be a little more vulnerable with our offensive line situation. That’s why we took Sanchez out. That was my decision. I think he showed us everything we needed to see. He completed a vertical route, mid-range pass, he completed everything. The offense looked great.

I thought Kellen, with the one mistake in the pocket where he fumbled, other than that I thought he played well. I was really happy with Ainge.

On if Sanchez will start next week against Baltimore…

I haven’t made that decision yet. We’ll sit down and talk about it. But he will definitely play more.

On Sanchez’s first pass of the game…

You have to ask Schotty [Brian Schottenheimer] because I was shocked by it. I was like, ‘what the heck is that? Let the guy warm up a little bit [laughing].’ But he has all the confidence in the world in him. Clowney had a step on him. It was just a great throw as well. I think that just shows you the kind of kid he is. This guy, he’s a cool customer.

On if he feels better about the wide receiver competition after tonight’s game…

I’ve been saying that, that the wideouts are pretty good. Brad Smith had a couple of real nice catches. Wallace [Wright] had a couple nice ones, ] got shaken up on one he should have caught, but I was happy with our offense, all of them. You have three starters out on your offensive line. I’m not an excuse guy at all, but those guys stepped up and played well.

On the quarterbacks improving their chances…

I was happy with all three of the quarterbacks. I thought they all played well. When Sanchez came in, he looked like he looks in practice. He stepped in there, it wasn’t too big for him. It wasn’t too big for [Kellen] Clemens, and quite honestly, I thought Ainge played really well also. I don’t think we’re there yet. We’ll meet as a staff and if there’s a decision to be made, we’ll all discuss it.

On if Sanchez would be the choice to start at Baltimore…

That’s what you guys would think. So we’ll see. If we decide that, we’ll see. A lot goes into that. The opponent we are playing is pretty decent on defense, I think they shut out the Redskins. There are other factors as well. [Kellen] Clemens did a good job minus that one bad [play]. But we’ll make that decision and then we’ll let you guys know. It would be probably obvious in the first practice what we are going to do.

On the game affecting players “under the radar” who are trying to make the roster…

It affected a couple players negatively. I know it’s the first game and you have pre-game jitters, but you’ve got to play in the NFL. You have to have skin like an armadillo. You have to be tougher than that. You can’t make mental mistakes. There were some guys that disappointed me, but I thought [Britt] Davis had a nice catch. That was good to see. I thought some of the young offensive linemen. [Matt] Slauson, from what I saw, did a decent job. I thought [Matt] Kroul, at times, was pretty good on defense.

On his first game as head coach…

It was good for awhile. I was calling the defense early in the game until the last series of the second quarter. That was business as usual. Schotty [Brian Schottenheimer], he ran the offense over there. He doesn’t have to check with me to do anything he wants. He made a great statement at half time. I just love the attitude. He said, “We are going to run the ball every snap until we get the first down”. And he meant it.

The great thing is, most guys would shy away from third and long. You’re playing at home, most guys are going to have to throw it or get booed out of the stadium. He made that statement and this is what we preach the whole time. When we make a statement to our team, we are going to follow it up. That means, if we say a statement, “We are going to run the ball 50 times”, we better have 50 carries. I was proud of Schottenheimer. I love his statement that he made to the offense. He was tired of that, he knew we could run the ball better than that and that’s why we kept running it to start the second half.

I feel strong about this team. I really do. To be able to go without three of your starting offensive linemen and be able to move the football like we did, with three different quarterbacks, I thought that was pretty impressive. Our defense, I know what we can do. I know we are missing two Pro Bowlers but I like the attitude we took the field with. When you have that Jets decal on your helmet, that should stand for something. I don’t care if you’re the third team or whatever you are, that has to mean something, that has to be a prideful thing.

To let someone run the ball for a 90 yard touchdown and rip in there and make a mistake and let a team score on you with a linebacker covering a wideout, that doesn’t make any sense. I wanted the team to know how disappointed I was and the fact that I can’t stand losing. I don’t want the team to stand for it either. I have a tough times believing they can play for me and understand that we are all disappointed. We all wanted to celebrate a victory.

Pardon me, but I’m still not totally used to Rex Ryan’s brutal honesty when speaking to the media. Mangini, Parcells, Groh and Belichick have brainwashed me not to expect anything substantial out of press conferences, interviews and saturday afternoon talk shows. So, when Rex speaks, it’s still new to me for him to be honest and upfront about what he wants and likes for the team. This specific quote stood out to me when he was asked Saturday what they looked for in undrafted free agents:

There are going to be some guys we release who may be able to play in the National Football League. We just don’t think they can play for us. We want guys that are just so passionate about it that they give everything they have. That kind of investment is what we are looking for. We’ve had some guys that might have been short on talent but they made up for it in everything else and they have a chance to make it.

What’s refreshing to me is you so often see teams just sign talent for the sake of talent. It’s become clear that Ryan is determined to sign players to fit what he wants, whether they’re the most talented or not. So often we see teams like the Cowboys or Redskins just throw money and talent at the wall and hope it sticks into something substantial. Pittsburgh, Indy and New England have found guys in late rounds, guys as free agents who just fit the team philosophy and who’s abilities are maxmized by the system. What that tells me is that perhaps he sees the young receivers on the roster as guys who may not be the “big name” or most talented, but guys who can fit into what they want to do on offense and develop into legitimate weapons — just maybe not in the traditional sense.

More Ryan quotes after the jump…

On whether to sit or play a rookie QB…

I certainly understand why people do it (sit a rookie quarterback). It’s hard to buy experience. If the guy has that kind of ability where you think that he could help your football team, then I think you have to give a guy that opportunity.

As we’ve seen and said before, Rex is going to start who he thinks is going to help him win NOW. He’s going to start the best QB regardless of whether it’s Sanchez or Clemens. What I think fans should be on the lookout for during minicamps and training camp is which player can manage the offense best this year, not necessarily who shows the best potential for years to come.

On Baltimore starting Kyle Boller his rookie season …

(The Ravens) thought it was the best choice, it gave our team the best chance to put him out there. He had some ups and downs. He got hurt almost in the first game of the season. Everybody’s different and there’s always a different circumstance.

Being an NFL head coach is never an easy or guaranteed business so be clear that Ryan is not just going to start Sanchez because he’ll be the better QB in 2 years. Sitting on the bench and learning isn’t going to hurt, but that said, if Sanchez is arm and arm with Clemens at the end of this competition, it’s likely Sanchez will get the benefit of the doubt. Something also to consider: Regardless of what he says, a holdout is possible. As Jets fans know, Tannenbaum plays hardball when it comes to rookie contracts and Stafford’s deal is not exactly cheap. That’s going to be something to keep an eye on.

On if anyone jumped out at Coach Ryan today…

It was good to watch them (Offensive line) really work. That offensive line is so much of your character as a football team. I love the way (Bill) Callahan coaches. He is a tough guy and he really makes those guys work. They are not just eating the grass, they are really working out there.

We all saw Callahan’s coaching work wonders last year as the offensive line jelled into one of the best in the NFL. I know that of all the coaches I hoped Ryan would hold onto as he took office, Callahan was hands down No. 1. Callahan’s aggressive coaching style fits right into Ryan’s wheelhouse and it’s good to see that nothing has changed. Look for the offensive line to continue to be a major strength of this team. Sixth-roud pick Matt Slauson should be an interesting developmental prospect to watch considering his history with Callahan at Nebraska.

On his impressions of Shonn Greene…

I love the way guys bounce off him. He comes rolling in there, guys are going flying. Guys are trying to tag him, his teammate went flying today, bounced off him.

…

But it’s true, he hits that hole and you say ‘man, that’s a big man coming through there.’ He runs low, he’s a big ol’ rascal. They bounce off him. Unfortunately, some of the passes bounce off him.

…

Those are things we can work on. We literally can get that better in his game. (Running backs coach) Anthony Lynn is an outstanding coach. He couldn’t take it today. He had to put those guys through more ball drills. He said ‘I let them slide for one day, but not two days.’ I think he’ll get better that way and I think his pass protection will improve also.

On whether Greene’s burst is better than he thought …

Not more than I thought. Maybe more than a lot of people thought. I think if you are just looking at him, you just see this big guy. I think he surprises a lot of people how quick he is and the kind of speed he really does have.

I wanted to get both of the Green responses out before I commented. Greene is an individual who has been through a fair amount in order to get to the NFL and I think he’s is going to be a HUGE addition for this team. I think he’s very much like Brandon Jacobs and we’ve seen what kind of impact he has had with the Giants. Despite all of the rushing touchdowns last season, it’s been a long time since the Jets had someone they could give the ball to on 4th and 1 or on the goal line and just ask them to push through the line. He’s a huge body and is likely to be used in a very situational role in his rookie year. He could be very similar to what Tim Hightower was for Arizona this past year and snake a good number of short-yardage touches from Thomas Jones. With the team likely to run the ball a heavy amount, having 3 NFL-quality backs is a major boost. However, it’ll be interesting to see what kind of impact this has on Jehuu Caulcrick’s roster status and potential playing time this season.

Mangini talked today about Leon’s progression, Keller’s confidence, and more.

Opening statement…

Today we are following our normal schedule, so we will be working primarily on third down. That will be the point of emphasis. Tennessee has always been very good defensively on third down since the time Jeff’s (Fisher) been there. It’s really no different this year and that’s an area we’ve made quite a bit of improvement on since the bye offensively. That will be a really good challenge for us.

On Jeff Fisher’s longevity with the Titans…

It’s incredible. You don’t see that very much anymore – the Don Shulas, the Tom Landrys, guys that were there 25, 20 years. It seems to be much rarer than it used to be. It’s a real testament to him. He’s done it in different places in terms of where the team was – all different types of players, young, old. It’s been the whole gambit and he’s been consistently successful. It’s impressive.

On the progress of CB Darrelle Revis…

Darrelle continues to make really good progress because of the way he works on his technique at practice and his consistency at practice. I had a long discussion with Leon (Washington) yesterday about the characteristics of great players. He brought up the fact that when he came into the league, he really thought that great players were extremely talented (and) more talented than the other players. Since he has been in the league, he realizes how hard working those guys are. They are extremely talented, but they are usually the leaders in terms of work ethic. A guy like Alan Faneca is a great example of that. Darrelle is moving along that same path in terms of being extremely talented, working on his technique every day in practice and having consistent levels of practice. I really like what he’s doing in terms of studying the opponent. That’s something that has improved significantly from his first year to his second year.

On whether he has made a decision between K Mike Nugent and Jay Feely…

No.

On reason for conversation with RB Leon Washington…

I was congratulating him on breaking the team’s record in terms of (career kickoff) returns and being the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. We were laughing about his early days here and the time that he made the decision as to how he was going to define his career. Mike (Westhoff) will have players present to the rest of the team. Leon, whenever he presents, it’s like a coach. It’s thorough. He’s the returner so he could easily say, ‘the kicker’s going to offset here. The ball’s going to come out to the five (yard line). It’s going to be this hang time,’ but he goes through block-by-block (and) how we have to block it, who the guy’s are we have to target, why we need to make sure we have those guys covered, what the reads are, what the adjustment is if the ball is outside the sideline and if the ball’s kicked somewhere it’s not supposed to be. It’s really satisfying to see. He’s one of the guys that came in with me and to see his growth and development is great.

On laughing with Washington about the fumbles during practice as a rookie…

It was the fumbling. It was the struggling with the blitz pickup, the route. He was about as in shape as I was. (smile) All of those things lead to a very tough rookie camp. He won the offseason award program. He was the overall winner this year. He was voted the team MVP last year. It’s his ability combined with his work ethic and determination. He’s another great example of size. He’s not the biggest guy in the world, but he finds a way to be consistently productive.

On whether RB Curtis Martin had an impact on Washington’s work ethic…

I definitely think that Curtis helped out. Curtis helps out a lot of people whenever he’s around. His focus is rare. I don’t know if he even dated during the season (smiling). It was all football all the time. That was his focus. When he was injured or dealing with any type of pain, I would ask him about it and he would say that not playing was not an option. It never entered into his psyche that he couldn’t play that week. Pain was not going to be an issue. Nothing was going to stop him.

On TE Dustin Keller’s confidence…

There is a fine line between confidence and over-confidence. He is very gifted. It’s easy to have confidence in him at practice. He makes unbelievable catch after unbelievable catch so the things that he has been able to do in the games aren’t surprising. If he continues to work at it and understand defenses as he gets better in terms of the fluidness and the feel of the routes then he will be that much more productive. There are times when some of his breaks look a little robotic. It’s not that smooth where you’re hinting and going, but it’s gotten a lot better. If he keeps working at it and drilling it (in terms of) where the openings are, he has tremendous upside.

On the matchup between DT Kris Jenkins and C Kevin Mawae…

Any time you put two players of their experience, ability and styles – they are different styles of players – that’s always fun to watch. Kevin is very savvy. He’s always been a very savvy guy. To see how he’s going to approach (Jenkins) will be real interesting.

On Brad Smith…

We always have plays in for Brad that are very specific to him, but the nice thing about where Brad has come in terms of being a receiver is he can just go in and play receiver. He doesn’t have to be in for gadget-plays are those Brad Smith-specific plays. He can just go in and play receiver. I am very confident with what he can do there. He is another guy who has consistently improved. It’s not a function of forgetting about Brad or putting him on the backburner, sometimes it’s just the way the game goes. We have a lot of guys who can do good things with the ball, so whoever ends up getting it is a plus.
